Work Text:
Hinata had known of the way people looked at her—the princess of the Hyuuga company, a wallflower of no presence, someone who was only able to achieve great heights because of ‘daddy’s money’. Hinata knew of it. Yet she could never speak of it. Because, in a way, they had been right. Hinata wasn’t particularly exceptional, she was average at best really. Not a single thing about her stood out. And she hated that fact. Knowing that no matter how she worked, stuggled and tried to reach greater heights she’d never be able to push past her limits.
She wasn’t like the exceptional people around her, the ones that were gifted and strong—having a good hold on their personality and strengths, knowing who they were. People like Neji and Sasuke. She wasn’t like them. And that thought worried her. Crept up under her skin like worms, wiggling around, yet she could never get them out, leaving her dry and cold. Cramped in her own skin. If she could just get out. Get out and start over, Hinata would be very thankful. Yet she couldn’t. So she’d simply just have to live with that fact and accept that she wasn’t anything extraordinary. That she’d never be anything extraordinary.
Hinata slumped into her seat, letting the firm couch envelop her body. Soon after someone came near her too, it was Sasuke of all people. The one who had sent her mind into a spiral just a moment ago. When Hinata had stepped foot into the renowned Uzumaki company, Sasuke, the second in command, had made a snarky remark. “How could a girl like her have gotten in?” That is what he’d said. There was more to it, but Hinata didn’t need to hear the rest to know what he insinuated, just with the look in his eyes she’d known, “taking advantage of having an important father, I see.”
That was what his eyes had said and Hinata couldn’t bear but to look away. Naruto, the boss, had tried to stand up for her, telling Sasuke to quiet down but by that point it had been too late. His words had already taken effect and seeped into her mind, making her doubt herself a thousand times more than she’d already had. And just with a simple look.
Hinata stiffened at his presence, going completely still as if not moving would suddenly make her disappear. Giving her the chance of avoiding Sasuke by all means, but of course that wasn’t how it worked. So instead she fiddled with her phone, as a way to make it seem as if she were doing something. Something important. To her surprise it seemed to have worked as Sasuke said no further words to her, instead just sitting next to her not saying a single word. Hinata kept her eyes on her phone, not daring to even glance at his direction, it didn’t do any good though as she could feel his eyes on her. The sharpness of them piercing all her barriers.
At some point she knew she’d have to speak, so she swallowed her fear and spoke, “Is there anything you need Mr. Uchiha?”
There was a short moment of silence.
“Uchiha…?” Hinata finally glanced over at him and just as she’d feared his eyes were on her, sharp and trained.
“There’s nothing I need.” He finally said.
“Then why are you here?” Sasuke raised his brows at the question. “I… I don’t mean that you’re not allowed to sit here, because of course you are! It’s just,” Hinata struggled to find the right words. Words that wouldn’t potentially set him off. “Why are you sitting here… looking at me?”
There was no change in Sasuke's expression, no hint of caring in his eyes either. Instead he pulled out a chocolate bar from his pocket and held it in front of Hinata, not saying a single word.
Hinata stared at the chocolate bar, noticing it was the flavour of the brand she liked the most. After moments of neither letting out any words Hinata realized that the chocolate was aimed at her because it was for her. So slowly, not really knowing what to do, she took a hold of it, holding it as gently as how you'd hold a baby’s hand, softly and carefully, not wanting to accidentally break it.
Even though she already knew the answer, Hinata's mouth still moved on its own, letting out a bewildering, “for me?”
Which Sasuke didn’t say anything about, he simply just stood up and walked away, leaving Hinata both confused and flustered. Getting a small chocolate bar from Sasuke wouldn’t really mean anything, Hinata didn’t even know why he did it but she couldn’t help but feel a small spark light up inside her.
What was that about?
Sasuke walked back into Naruto’s office and immediately got bombarded with questions.
“So did you give it? Did you formally apologize? Did she accept the apology?”
“I gave her the chocolate bar.”
“And…?”
Silence.
Naruto raised his hands in fists, closing his eyes in that familiar way he would always do when he was kid, “You only gave her the chocolate?! What about the apology?!”
Sasuke pulled out a chair and took a seat, grabbing a book by the nearby bookshelf behind him to flip through, not really reading the words.
“The chocolate was the apology.”
“That’s not anywhere near enough!”
“Seemed like enough for her.”
The corners of his lips lifted as he said that, Sasuke couldn’t tell why that was, but, remembering the look on her face when she saw that chocolate bar in front of her—after looking between him and it, finally deciding to take it her face got a small glow. One she didn’t seem to have noticed herself.
Hah.
That Hyuuga girl really was something.
