Chapter Text

-1-

The river ran quietly that evening, its surface silver under the fading light. It was the kind of peaceful dusk Magnolia rarely noticed — the guild loud as always somewhere behind them, life moving forward without hesitation.

But Juvia felt as if the world had paused just for this moment.

She stood near the water's edge, fingers twisting the fabric of her blue skirt, rehearsing the words again and again until they lost meaning.

Behind her, footsteps approached.

She didn't need to turn.

"…You said it was important," Gray spoke, hands shoved into his pockets. His tone was casual — too casual. The kind he used when he was already guarding himself.

Juvia inhaled slowly.

If she didn't ask now… she never would.

"Gray-sama," she said softly, "Juvia wishes to ask something today… and she hopes Gray-sama will answer honestly."

He stiffened almost imperceptibly.

"Since when do I lie?"

She smiled faintly.

Since always — when it comes to your heart.

Juvia turned to face him fully.

The river reflected in her eyes.

"Does Gray-sama… love Juvia?"

Silence.

The kind that pressed against the ribs.

A breeze stirred between them, carrying the distant laughter of guildmates who had no idea a universe was about to collapse.

Gray froze.

For a split second — just one — his mask cracked.

Because the answer rose inside him violently, instinctively.

Yes.

Yes in every moment he found himself searching for her in a crowd.

Yes in the way his body moved before his mind whenever she was in danger.

Yes in the warmth he never allowed himself to name.

But love was a weakness.

And everything Gray loved…

was taken from him.

Ur.

His father.

His mother.

He could still hear their last breaths in his nightmares.

He imagined Juvia lying motionless because someone wanted to hurt him.

The thought alone made his stomach twist.

He could survive losing himself.

He would not survive losing her.

So he did the cruelest thing he had ever done.

He stepped back.

"…No."

The word was quiet.

But it shattered louder than thunder.

Rain began to fall.

Of course it did.

Juvia did not react immediately.

For a moment she simply looked at him — searching his face as if trying to find the warmth she had always seen there.

"…I see."

Her voice did not break.

That hurt more.

Gray's nails dug into his palms.

Say something else.

Tell her the truth.

Stop this.

But fear chained his tongue.

Juvia lowered her gaze, watching raindrops disturb the river.

"It seems… Juvia misunderstood many things."

Each word was gentle.

Careful.

As if she were the one protecting him.

"I thought… perhaps the way Gray-sama looked at Juvia meant something more. The way you call her name… the way you worry…"

She laughed softly.

It was the sound of a dream dissolving.

"How embarrassing."

"Juvia—"

He shouldn't say her name like that.

Not when he had just pushed her away.

She shook her head lightly.

"No… please don't comfort Juvia. That would only make this harder."

Rain clung to her lashes, but he could not tell where the droplets ended and her tears began.

"Loving Gray-sama was never a burden. It made Juvia very happy."

The past tense sliced through him.

"But from this moment… Juvia will try to stop."

The world tilted.

Stop?

No.

She stepped back — mirroring the distance he had created.

"Juvia will keep these feelings quietly inside her heart… and she will no longer trouble Gray-sama with them."

Every instinct in him screamed to close the distance.

To pull her into his arms.

To apologize.

To confess.

Instead, he stood frozen — a coward disguised as a protector.

"…It was Juvia's mistake to imagine she was loved."

Thunder rolled across the sky.

Gray felt something fracture inside his chest.

She bowed her head slightly, the same polite gesture she used with strangers.

Not with him.

Never with him.

"Thank you… for answering honestly."

Honest.

If only she knew.

She turned.

And began to walk away.

Each step was unbearably calm.

Gray watched her go, rain soaking through his hair, his clothes — his skin — yet he felt nothing compared to the numbness spreading through him.

Go after her.

His body refused.

Because if he stopped her…

he would choose her.

And if he chose her…

he might one day destroy her.

So he remained there, drowning in a storm of his own making.

A whisper escaped him, too late for her to hear.

"…I do love you."

His voice broke.

"But not in a world cruel enough to take you from me."

The river carried his confession away.

And for the first time since he was a child…

Gray Fullbuster prayed he had just made the right mistake.

...

The Night That Broke Them

The rain did not stop.

Not that night.

Not the next morning.

And for the first time in years…

Juvia did not follow the rain.

Juvia

She closed her door quietly.

No dramatic collapse.

No sobbing.

Just silence.

Her room felt unfamiliar, as if it belonged to someone else — someone who still believed in impossible things.

A small box sat on her table.

Inside were the tiny memories she once treasured without shame:

A button from Gray's shirt she had secretly kept.

A napkin he used after a mission.

A ribbon he once said "looked nice."

Juvia stared at them for a long time.

Then she smiled.

Not a happy smile.

The kind people wear when they decide to be strong.

"…This is where Juvia's love will rest."

She placed the lid back on the box.

Did not throw it away.

Did not destroy it.

Because love, even unanswered, was never something she could hate.

That night…

For the first time since her childhood…

The rain fell outside.

But Juvia did not cry with it.

And somehow…

that hurt more.

...

Gray did not go home immediately.

He remained by the river until the sky turned pale.

Repeating that single word in his mind.

No.

"I should've said it colder," he muttered bitterly.

"She would've hated me… that would've been easier."

But Juvia hadn't hated him.

She had thanked him.

That gratitude carved into his chest like ice.

...

Days passed.

Something in the guild changed — subtle, almost invisible.

Juvia was still kind.

Still gentle.

But no longer orbiting him like the tide.

No lunches waiting for him.

No bright "Gray-sama!"

No footsteps matching his.

Space.

So much space.

And Gray realized something terrifying:

He had not noticed how much of his world was shaped around her…

until she stepped out of it.

One afternoon, he overheard Lucy whisper:

"Juvia feels… farther away, doesn't she?"

Gray left bef2xdzaore he heard the rest.

Because he knew.

He had pushed her there.

Weeks later, a mission turned dangerous.

Too dangerous.

When an enemy spell shot toward him, Gray reacted instantly—

—but someone else moved faster.

Water rose like a shield.

Precise. Controlled. Distant.

Juvia.

She didn't look at him afterward.

Didn't ask if he was hurt.

Only said calmly:

"Please be more careful, Gray-sama. The enemy is strong."

Formal.

Polite.

Untouchable.

In that moment…

Gray understood.

He had not protected her.

He had only taught her how to live without him.

That night he punched the training yard until his knuckles split.

Not from anger.

From the unbearable realization that the warmth he feared losing…

was already slipping through his fingers.

"…What have I done…"

For the first time since Ur's death…

Gray Fullbuster cried without making a sound.

And somewhere in Magnolia…

Two hearts learned the same lesson at the same time:

Love does not disappear when denied.

It simply learns how to exist…

in silence.

.

Time had passed.

Not enough to forget.

Just enough to learn how to breathe around the pain.

Juvia had become quieter.

Stronger.

Less transparent.

But hope…

Hope is a stubborn thing.

No matter how many times she buried it, it kept whispering:

He looked at you too long.

He stepped in front of that attack.

His voice softens when he says your name.

Maybe… just maybe…

He had lied that day by the river.

...

The guild hall buzzed softly that afternoon.

Then Juvia saw it.

Lucy stood near the request board, shoulders trembling.

A letter crushed in her hand.

Gray was in front of her.

Close.

Too close.

He hesitated only a second before pulling her into an embrace.

Not awkward.

Not reluctant.

Natural.

Protective.

His hand rested gently on her head.

"It's okay," he murmured.

Juvia stopped walking.

The world muted itself.

She had imagined that place so many times…

At his side.

Against his chest.

But reality is merciless.

It chooses someone else without asking.

Gray glanced up.

Their eyes met.

And in that instant…

He knew she had misunderstood.

Again.

Good.

Let her.

Let this be the final blade.

Because half-distance was torture.

If she stayed near him…

she would never be safe from the enemies still circling his life.

So when Lucy stepped away, calmer, thanking him — Gray made a decision.

A brutal one.

He approached Juvia.

"…We should talk."

Her fingers trembled slightly.

Still hope.

Still that fragile, glowing thing he had failed to kill.

"I saw you with Lucy," Juvia said softly.

No accusation.

That almost broke him.

So he forced the lie out quickly — before courage could betray him.

"I understand what she's feeling."

"…Because I care so much . I love.. "

He paused .. Then whispered "... Someone."

The words tasted like poison.

Juvia's heartbeat roared in her ears.

Love.

Someone.

Gray continued, each word heavier than the last.

"With everything I have. My heart… my life… my world. I love... "

And as he spoke…

he saw her.

Rain-soaked hair.

Unyielding devotion.

The girl who chose him again and again.

You.

It has always been you.

He wish to say it.

Her lips parted.

A whisper barely born into sound.

"…Lucy?" she murmerd expecting his answer.

The universe shattered inside his chest.

For one dangerous second—

he almost grabbed her shoulders.

Almost confessed everything.

Almost chose happiness.

But loving Juvia meant surviving himself.

Meant becoming the man who didn't drag her into darkness.

So Gray did something only people who truly love are capable of:

He turned his back…

so she wouldn't see his face break.

"…Yes."

One word.

One irreversible word.

Something inside Juvia went very still.

Not the stillness of shock.

The stillness that comes after a door closes forever.

" I see," she said.

No tears fell.

Gray would have preferred screams.

Anger.

Anything but this calm acceptance.

"Juvia apologizes… for misunderstanding your kindness."

Kindness.!!!

God, he wished it had only been kindness.

She bowed slightly — formal again.

Distant again.

"Juvia wishes Gray-sama happiness."

Each syllable erased her from his future.

Then she turned.

But this time…

she did not walk slowly.

She did not hesitate.

She did not look back.

Hope had finally died.

That Night

Juvia packed very little.

She was never someone tied to possessions.

Only to people.

And she had just untied the strongest thread in her heart.

A letter rested on the table in her empty apartment.

Simple.

Neat.

Almost peaceful.

" Juvia has decided to travel for a while.

Please do not worry.

Juvia is going to become someone stronger.

Someone who no longer mistakes kindness for love."

No blame.

No bitterness.

Just growth.

And goodbye.

When Gray Found Out

He read the letter once.

Twice.

Then the paper slipped from his hand.

"Travel…?"

Days turned into weeks.

No missions with her.

No rain following the guild.

Even the sky felt wrong.

Magnolia had sunlight.

And Gray hated it.

Because only one thing could mean this absence.

Juvia was no longer revolving around him.

She had chosen a world…

without Gray Fullbuster in it.

His knees hit the floor before he noticed.

For the third time in his life…

Gray understood what it meant to lose someone precious.

Only this time—

He had been the one who let go.

"…Come back," he whispered to an empty room.

But the rain girl was already gone.

What do you think?

Would you like to know what's next..?
