Hiori can’t really see much from where he is. He can see through the small cracks of the closet, but it's just barely. It's cramped with clothes that fell from hangers on the floor that Hiori tried to avoid stepping on, but in such a tight area, it wasn't possible. He was sucking in almost all of his body weight to just fit inside here.
He attempted to quiet his breathing by clasping a hand over his mouth and nose, hoping his presence wouldn't be noticed. He watched Rin kick things that Hiori had brought over underneath his bed in a panic as Sae’s voice spoke through the bedroom door.
Hiori mentally sighed to himself, wondering how he got himself in this predicament. He was supposed to be home thirty minutes ago, but he prolonged it just because he didn’t want to leave the comfort of his boyfriend’s bed just yet. But now, as he looks at the situation he caught himself in, he’s wishing he had.
Hiding in his boyfriend’s closet wasn’t how he expected to spend his weekend.
Going off of what Rin said, he didn’t know that Sae was supposed to be home today. With that in mind, he considered it safe to invite Hiori over to his house.
The day went by as normally as it could. The two of them played video games, watched movies, and ate together, activities they usually did when hanging out. Nothing out of the ordinary was to be seen or expected.
It was fine for a few hours until the sound of the front door opening alerted Rin when the two of them were curled up on his bed. Then the sound of his brother’s voice confirmed his suspicion and he was quick to tell Hiori to hide. Due to his height, he couldn't hide in many small places, so he sprinted toward the closet and tried his best to conceal himself.
Soon enough, Hiori sees Rin take a deep breath and open the door. “What?”
“Why are you locking doors?” Sae’s voice makes Hiori stop breathing altogether, desperate to stay hidden. He can’t see him from the angle he’s standing in, but he’s too scared to move. “Didn’t you hear me calling?”
Rin huffs. “It’s my room, I’ll do whatever I want.”
Sae hums in response, not amused. He steps past Rin and into his room, glancing around.
He’s looking for something. Hiori’s pulse thundered.
“What are you doing? Get out.” Rin demands and attempts to sound firm, but it comes out as panicked. “What are you even doing here? Aren’t you supposed to come home later?”
Sae shrugged, still glancing at every corner and crevice. “Things changed.”
“You could’ve told me.”
“Strange,” Sae murmured, making direct eye contact with his brother. “Usually you don’t care. Why the sudden interest?”
“I-” Rin stuttered, his mouth opening and closing as he failed to find an excuse. “Just get out already!”
Then, Sae glances underneath Rin’s bed. His eyes narrow as he finds nothing but old shoe boxes and other things Rin shoved down there.
“What the fuck are you doing?” Rin gritted his teeth, standing in front of the closet. Hiori assumed he hoped to block Sae from peeking inside and spotting him. “Get out!”
Sae sighs. He looks at his brother with a deep stare. “I’m not stupid, Rin.”
“I have no idea what you're talking about.”
Sae crossed his arms. “There’s another pair of shoes by the door. I’ve never seen those shoes in my entire life and I’m sure I’ve never seen you wear them either. So who’s here?”
Hiori could die right now. He could suffocate himself fast enough so he could pass out. Anything to save him the embarrassment of having to walk out and admit that he was indeed hiding.
Rin, who can’t admit he’s lying, continues. “Nobody’s here, you freak. The shoes are mine. I got new ones. Not that it’s any of your fucking business.”
“Oh, are they?” His brother tilted his head in a mocking gesture. “Are the extra plates in the sink yours too?”
“…Yes.”
“Oh, really.”
“I was hungry.”
Sae glances around the room again, pointing at the bed. “Whose blue jacket is that then?”
Hiori curses in his head. He really should’ve grabbed that.
“…It’s mine.” Rin says after a beat.
Sae hums and takes it upon himself to walk over to Rin’s bed, picking up the jacket. “That's odd. I can’t remember a medium ever fitting a medium.”
Hiori feels like if he closed his eyes long enough, his willpower could make him turn invisible. Maybe if he holds his breath long enough, he would turn invisible and slip away.
Rin sprints across the room faster than the speed of sound, snatching the jacket. “Can you mind your business?! Get out!”
“It’s not your jacket. Who do you have here? I thought you didn’t have any friends.”
“It’s not a friend!”
“So you do have someone here? Partner then?”
“No, I-” Rin groaned, frustrated. “Can you leave?!”
Sae doesn’t look convinced. He stands there in front of Rin, unimpressed, not believing a single word he says.
For a moment, Hiori thinks he’ll get away and Sae will leave Rin alone, leaving the perfect opportunity for Hiori to sneak away.
Through the small cracks on the closet doors, Sae looks past Rin and meets Hiori’s eyes.
Fuck.
Hiori stays paralyzed, fear flowing through his body. His heart drops to the floor, a pit in his stomach forming.
He's never been more scared.
Maybe Sae isn’t looking at him and his attention is directed at something else! He shouldn’t give away his cover just because of a misunderstanding!
But as Hiori doesn’t pull his eyes away, afraid he’d make a mistake by doing so, Sae only intensifies his gaze. It feels like it’s centered straight at him and nothing else.
He holds his breath.
Turn invisible, turn invisible!
He tries to stop his heart from beating so loudly, but nothing works.
I’m so dead.
“Come out,” Sae said. “I know you’re in there.”
“Why do you even care who I have in my room?” Rin spat at him, still attempting to hide Hiori even when they’ve been caught. “Again, it’s none of your fucking business, so you can fuck off!”
Sae ignores Rin, not phased by his screaming. He speaks louder this time. “It’s either you come out yourself or I drag you out.”
Hiori wishes he could find a spoon lying on the floor and try to carve a way out through the walls.
Even from where Hiori is, he can still see Rin getting visibly upset. “You’re not touching him.”
“Now I know you have someone in here.” Sae rolled his eyes. “Come out.”
Hiori swallows the lump in his throat and finally breathes. He doesn’t have a way out of this.
With a shaky hand, he slowly slides the closet door open.
_______
Hiori wipes the palms of his hands on his pants, bouncing his leg up and down nervously. He stares down into his lap and hopes the minutes tick by faster and faster.
Next to him, Rin reaches out to grab his hand to calm him down. He doesn’t say anything, speaking through a simple squeeze he gives Hiori. As if he’s trying to say it’s okay. He highly doubts any of this is okay, but Rin brings some comfort.
However, it doesn’t make the situation any more awkward.
Together, the two of them sit around a kitchen table. Hiori and Rin are sitting next to each other on one side and Sae is sitting on the opposite side. He has his arms crossed, eyeing both of them with an unreadable expression.
Hiori feels his palms start to sweat again. He starts to feel bad for Rin who has to deal with it, but all he does is squeeze his hand tighter to ease his worries.
This is not how he expected to get introduced to Rin’s brother.
“So.” Sae begins after what feels like hours. His eyes peered straight into Hiori’s soul. “You’re the one my brother’s been seeing?”
Hiori slowly looks up, his eyes full of embarrassment. He nods, “Um- yes. I’m sorry we had to meet this way.”
“No, I’m sorry. I already knew you’ve been coming here for the last few weeks.” He replied, causing Rin and Hiori to look at him with wide eyes. Sae only shrugged at their shocked faces. “It’s not like you kept it a secret. Or did you try to? Because you did an awful job, Rin.”
“Wait- if you knew, then why the fuck are you making it such a big deal now?!” Rin exclaimed.
“Because I got tired of you never introducing me.” Sae glanced at Hiori. “He’s your boyfriend, isn’t he? He’s been coming over for the past month and you never said anything. I let you live with your secret for a while since I know how you are, but it’s been long enough.”
“You don’t think there’s a reason I didn’t want to tell you?”
“Oh, I'm sure there are many reasons.” Sae rolled his eyes. He turned his attention to Hiori instead, who had just been sitting there awkwardly. “Hiori, right?”
Hiori jumped slightly at the mention of his name. “Ah- yes. It’s nice to meet you.”
“Likewise.” Despite Sae trying to remain friendly, his tone says otherwise. “We could’ve met under better circumstances if my brother wasn’t hiding you.”
“I wasn’t hiding him.”
“He was just in the closet for no reason then?” Sae asked, glancing at his brother who could only redden and fail to come up with another excuse. “Anyway, Hiori, how long have you been seeing my brother?”
Hiori really didn’t want to be in the middle of this sibling fight, but he just wanted to get this over with quickly. “It’s been a few months. We met in school and it spiraled from there.”
“What do you like about him?”
Hiori swallowed anxiously.
There were many things Hiori liked about Rin. Things that were way too specific and were embarrassing to admit out loud when he’s sitting right there. Especially in front of his older brother.
Rin noticed Hiori glance at him for help. Like a good boyfriend, he jumped in to save him. “What are you getting at?”
“I’m trying to get to know your boyfriend.”
“You don’t need to know him.”
“As your brother, I think I do.”
“Since when have you ever given a shit about my life?”
Hiori suddenly gets an awkward feeling that he’s most likely the cause of this fight. It’s nerve-racking enough that he got caught hiding in his boyfriend’s closet by his older brother, but to also have to sit through them arguing when he knows it’s his fault?
He should probably make his escape right now.
“I think I should go,” Hiori says with a nervous laugh, bringing the brothers to a pause as they stare at him in silence. “I-I mean, it’s almost past my curfew. Thank ya for havin’ me, but I really think I need to go.”
To be completely honest, it was past his curfew. His parents had been blowing up his phone this entire time, but he had been ignoring it because he didn’t want to be seen as rude. He also didn’t care about being past curfew, he had already decided to stay with Rin for a little longer. He just didn’t know his brother would catch them. This just seems like the perfect opportunity to get out of the situation.
Rin acts first. He stands up, chair scraping loudly against the floor, still holding Hiori’s hand. He begins pulling Hiori away from the table, and toward the front door.
“Come back soon.” Hiori heard Sae call out calmly.
Unlike Rin, Hiori couldn’t read Sae’s emotions. Was he being sarcastic or did he actually want him to come back? Either way, he was still happy he got out of that.
Once he and Rin are outside and standing in front of the front door that is firmly closed, Rin groans into his hands.
Hiori understands he must be embarrassed and places a comforting hand on his shoulder. “It’s okay, y’know.”
“No, it’s not.” Rin scoffs, the tips of his ears going bright pink. “I can’t believe he would do this to me.”
“If it makes ya feel any better, it was awkward for me too.”
Rin glared at him. “That makes me feel worse.”
“Awkward moments happen within couples.” He replied, bringing Rin’s face to look at him. “It’s completely fine. I was more scared than awkward.”
Rin’s eyes narrowed, leaning into his touch. “Scared? Why would you be scared?”
“Your older brother catches me hidin’ in your closet and wants to talk. Pretty scary.”
“The only thing he’s good at is being a shitty brother,” Rin mumbled, his gaze falling to the ground. “He ruined everything.”
Hiori frowned. “Nothing’s ruined. I’m still your boyfriend, we’re still together. Sure, it was terrifyin’, but I’m not gonna run away because your brother scared me. I love ya too much for that.”
“He still shouldn’t have scared you...” He sighed with a pout that Hiori found adorable.
“We’re not defined by our family,” Hiori whispered to him, leaning in to softly peck him on the lips. “I still love ya more than anythin’. This isn’t gonna stop me from comin’ over.”
Rin didn’t say much. He responded by kissing Hiori again. It wasn’t a quick peck, but something that was filled with longing. Hiori smiled into the kiss as Rin’s hand came up to cradle his cheek. Hiori placed his own hands on Rin’s chest as the kiss deepened, balled fists onto his shirt.
The two of them flushed their bodies together, continuing to get lost in their own world. It was like nothing else mattered when Rin’s lips were on him. The awkward encounter before was completely wiped from Hiori’s mind. All that was in his brain was Rin. Rin who was kissing him and holding him so tightly as if he was going to disappear into the night sky.
Rin’s kisses are all taking, as if he were trying to drag something out of Hiori with small touches and the meaningful brushing of each other's lips. Hiori wanted to open his eyes and bear witness to what kind of expression Rin was making, but he was too distracted by Rin’s nose grazing against his. No matter how many times they’ve kissed before, Hiori doesn’t think he’ll ever get bored with it.
Hiori only remembers now that they’re still standing right outside Rin’s house. He should probably call this off and go home, but as Rin’s lips keep brushing against his, he can’t bring himself to pull away. It's addictive.
Hiori can’t help but think that he wants more. He wants to keep kissing and never leave his boyfriend’s side. Even with the fate of his parents on his phone buzzing in his back pocket, he ignores it as if it wasn’t there. The only thing his attention was on was Rin and how much he wanted more-
The door swings open.
Hiori and Rin flinch away from each other immediately, both of their faces turning a dark shade of red.
Sae stands in the doorway, their lips in a straight line. “It’s getting late.”
Hiori breathes heavily for a moment, still trying to recover from the makeout session he was pulled out of. He blinks and quickly wipes his lips with the back of his hand. “R-right! Sorry! You’re right, I should get goin’ now!”
“I-I’ll walk you,” Rin says instantly. Hiori knows he’s feeling just as embarrassed as he is and nods.
Sae crossed his arms as Hiori and Rin fumbled to find their wording. “If you two want to make out, then do it somewhere that I can’t see you. You do realize the blinds aren’t covering the windows, right?”
“Fuck off!” Rin shouted at him as he took Hiori’s hand and ran off.
Hiori’s parents will absolutely murder him when he gets home, but as he sees Rin with his crimson cheeks, he thinks that right now, everything would mostly end up okay.
He’s still incredibly embarrassed about what happened. Not only does Sae catch him hiding in Rin’s room, but he also catches them kissing?
It's going to take a while for him to build up the courage to face Rin’s brother again.
