"She stayed downtown?" she repeated, intoning the phrase as if speaking about the day's weather. "How strange. She didn't mention having any pending grading or any meeting with the dean."
"It's just that it wasn't anything university-related," Jayce blurted out with utter casualness, taking a piece of bread. "She went out for drinks. Ahri, the new professor from the Arts department, asked me for her number a few days ago, and apparently, she asked her out. Vi seemed half-surprised when I saw her by the lockers this afternoon, but she accepted. I told her it would do her good to unwind a bit and go out with someone for once."

It was instinctively her first thought, unstoppable. A fierce, sour thought, and entirely uncharacteristic of her.
The silence that settled over the dining room was so sudden that the ticking of the wall clock seemed to double in volume.
