Chapter Text
Well just to prove that you do.
Average. Boring. Normal.
Those were simply words that weren't used at Hope’s Peak Academy.
They were useless there, for only idiots would compare the brightest lights of the world, the precious stars, to the common herd.
Idiots.

The air in the office was stuffy and hot. Even with all the windows and doors open, it felt like there was no ventilation at all. Every exhale was trapped in the room.
Kame's personal hell.
“Miss Oishi?”
“I told you to call me Kame.” There was a sharpness to her words that was only amplified by the annoyed look on her face that seemed to drag the vibes of the conversations down.
“Ri- Right! Well as I was saying, due to your letter of recommendation your transfer to Hopes Peak will happen as soon as we can make it!” Nervousness seemed to loom over the advisors shoulders as she spoke. “You must be incredibly excited.”
Sighing Kame nods her head, the large dramatic pigtails made the movement seem more animated than it truly was. Even with the small movement it seemed like more than enough to reassure her advisor.
“It won't be much of a change. I- I promise Kame.”
With a hesitant approach the counselor holds her hands out for Kame to take, her professionalism dropped for just a moment.
though instead of taking them Kame stands turning her back to the woman and returning to the door she entered through, her shoulders tense and uncomfortable.
“Im leaving.”
There's a quiet resignation for a moment before she leaves.
Kame was not a child that needed to be reassured anymore.
And even with countless thoughts that ran through her mind, nervousness was never to be shown. Not now, not ever.
“Kame!” Her thoughts are stopped for a moment as a voice calls out.
“Konoka..” There's an almost familiar softness to her voice, “Hello.”
It takes less than a second for Konoka to take her hand and pull her along on a walk, not that Kame was surprised; Konoka was always a touchy one.
“I heard you're transferring,” She swung their intertwined hands lightly as they walked, pace matched with ease that could only come from years of time spent together. “Leaving so easily, Miss Ultimate Social butterfly?”
“It's not like that.” Kame scrunched her nose slightly as her title was used, it was so stupid. “It was only a matter of time for me to get a letter after she did.”
“Do you think she influenced the decision?”
“Obviously.” Kame slows, taking the chance to really look at what she was leaving behind; She had spent all of her life here- Moko’s reforming school for darling daughter -A hell.
The grass was dead and so were half the girls, it seemed more and more suicides happened each year,
From 2,000 to 300
Her class seemed to continue to get smaller.
“Konoka.” they had come to a complete stop when Kame's voice broke the soft silence that had accumulated.
She looks past Konoka to the bare walls, light barely being filtered through the heavily tinted windows.
“Try not to die while I'm gone.”
A heavy laugh leaves the other girl, “I never seen you be so sentimental Kame.” She squeezes Kame's hand softly, the dim lighting almost making her look like a memory.
“I'll be fine,” Konoka pulls lightly to get Kame to start walking again, their footsteps filling the space with sound. “I took care of you after all.”
There's a certain warmth to her words, more reassuring than anything else
“I won't reach out after I leave.”
“I didn't expect you to.”
The rest of the walk is silent save for their matching footsteps and the soft chirping of birds outside that they would never see.
~°~°~°~
“Do you really think I need that?” Kame looks confused as random crap kept being thrown in her suitcase.
“Of course Miss Social Butterfly!”
“I told you to stop calling me that.” The glare that made her advisor pretty much shit herself seemed to have no effect on Konoka, but that wasn't much of a surprise.
Konoka waves her hand around lazily ignoring Kame's words and instead offering up her own question.
“Are you done yet?”
“I would be done if you stopped throwing trash at me.”
Laughing, Konoka shakes her head, “I'm not throwing them at you.”
“You are.” Kame zips the suitcase with a grunt of annoyance as Konoka moves into her space.
“I was.”
Surprisingly a moment of silence follows, almost invading the warm space both of the girls had created, it thankfully doesn't last long but the effect it created wasn't hard to see.
It was reminiscent of their walk here. How tragic.
Konokas the first to break the silence, as she usually is- Kame wasn't much of a talker.
“What time are you leaving?”
“As soon as I finish packing and walk out the doors.” Kame's words incite a large reaction from Konoka. She pushes away, taking a few steps back with a hesitant frown on her face.
“So soon? Kame- You just got the letter,”
“Konoka.”
“You should've told me. I thought we had more time..” It was.. unexpected for Konoka to be so open about her emotions. You couldn't afford to do that, not usually, not here.
“We don't.” Better for Konoka to be upset with Kame then spend the rest of her time in school as a weakling.
Grabbing her suitcase, Kame pushes past Konoka with little care.
“You shouldn't have gotten attached.” with a quiet scoff Kame looks over back at Konoka over her shoulder. “I was never going to stay in this with you.”
The silence returns but this time it stays. not for lack of words but rather lack of useful words.
Words to convince someone to stay.
Words to convince someone to understand.
It's a losing game either way so what's the point of trying.

Kame leaves the boarding school with little fanfare, She wasn't close to any of her ‘friends’ to want to say goodbye.
She didn't feel sentimental or worried, there wasn't a need to, anyone she may feel close to would know better than to die in such a place.
They'll meet again.
So there was only one thought in her mind as she watched the island that the school was settled in fade into obscurity.
“The Ultimate Social Butterfly. What a ridiculous talent.”
