Progress Report!

Summary:

The progression of Pink Diamond’s colony has increased dramatically. However, Pink is starting to become like the other Diamonds.

Work Text:

A single sapphire walks to Blue Diamond’s room. As she passes by other gems, they all glance at her, noticing her lack of protection. She pays them no mind as she makes her way to her Diamond.

When she reaches the door, she knocks on the door. A quartz soldier opens the door, allowing the sapphire to enter. She drifts into the room, approaching gracefully.

She walks up the stairs, standing before Blue Diamond.

“My Diamond, I have arrived.” Sapphire says, bowing to her.

“Sapphire, tell me about Pink.” Blue responds, looking down towards Sapphire.

Sapphire takes a moment, looking into the future. As she confirms with herself that’s what she sees, she looks up and speaks to Blue Diamond.

“I foresee that Pink Diamond’s colony will proceed as intended. There will also be a large battle between her quartz soldiers and native inhabitants of her planet. Surprisingly, she will more than likely succeed in her colonization of the planet.”

Blue’s eyes widen, her hands holding in the air for a moment before she sits down on her throne.

“Are you sure Sapphire? Is that truly what you see?”

“Yes, my Diamond. That’s what my future vision has shown me.” Sapphire reassures, nodding her head.

“Understood. That’ll be all.”

“Thank you. I look forward to speaking with you again in the future.” Sapphire bows to her.

She turns and exits the room, leaving Blue Diamond to process the information.

“Pink will succeed? Is that right?” Blue rubs her head, sighing softly.

She sits there in her throne, thinking of Sapphire’s prediction.

Pink Diamond sits at her throne, with Pearl showing her the status of the primary kindergarten.

“You know, my Diamond. The progress of your colony has increased greatly since you’ve started.”

“Has it? That’s..great.” Pink replies, smiling at her.

“It is. Would you like me to inform the other-“

“No!” Pink interrupts her, throwing her hands out in anxiety.

Pearl pauses, not expecting that reaction. Pink also pauses, realizing that she overreacted. She takes a breath and changes her tune;

“No, no need. I can tell them myself, okay?” Pink says, reassuring Pearl

“Oh…understood, my Diamond…” Pearl responds, confused at her decision.

“Anyways. Why don’t you tell me about the rest of the progress report?”

“Alright.”

Pearl projects the rest of the untouched planet.

“The rest of the planet will still require some terraforming. However, a few quartz soldiers have reported some native inhabitants on this planet.”

Pink puts her hand in front of Pearl, stopping her. Her eyebrows furrow as she think about the information told to her. She then stands up, turning to Pearl.

“Pearl, what are these…creatures?” She asks, looking at Pearl seriously.

“From what the quartz soldiers have told, these creature are long, insect like creatures. They are hostile towards us as stated by the quartzes.”

Pink looks down at her desk, thinking carefully about what she could do.

(What would the other Diamonds do…?)

Pearl awaits for Pink Diamond to continue or to ask her something. Instead, she receives only silence.

(Yellow would definitely get rid of them, like killing them. Blue…I’m too sure about her. But I know they’ll scold me if I don’t act like them.)

“My Diamond, is there something wrong?” Pearl asks, reaching her hand out slowly,

Her hand moves towards her. As her fingers nearly brush against Pink Diamond’s arm, Pink speaks in a dead serious tone.

“Pearl.”

“Y…Yes, my Diamond…?” Pearl retracts her hand, pulling it to her lap.

“Arrange the quartz soldiers to remove the creatures.” She tells her, staring out with an angry expression.

“What do you…mean by that…?” Pearl asks, taking a few steps back.

“To kill them, that’s what.” Pink turns to Pearl, getting annoyed at her hesitance.

“Okay, understood, my Diamond.” Pearl responds, looking down at the floor.

The quartz soldiers all line up at the edge of the kindergarten, going into groups to find the creatures and kill them.

“Listen! You all go into groups and search around the planet. If you see any of those insect creatures, you attack it on sight, is that understood?” A jasper instructs the other quartz soldiers.

“Yes!” They all respond.

The gems all start to go into groups. Three gems however get stuck together. Cherry, Lace and Zeb.
The majority of the quartzes start to walk off in groups of their own, leaving the three remaining to be together.

“Well, now we’re killing those creatures that we already killed days ago, yay…” Cherry says unenthusiastically.

“Yeah, you don’t say.” Lace rolls her eyes.

“I don’t think I’ve ever heard you be so dull, Cherry.” Zeb remarks, turning her head to express that.

“Yeah…well. I killed something, Zeb. Don’t you guys understand how much it hurts?” Cherry responds, looking between Zeb and Lace.

“No? We are soldiers. Soldiers! We’re supposed to get rid of things if our Diamond asks us to.” Lace refutes, wagging her finger at Cherry.

“I know that!”

“Quit arguing. You’ll bring all of them towards us.” Zeb says to the both of them.

“Good. We’re supposed to find these things and exterminate them.” Lace walks next to her, wrapping her arm around Zeb’s neck.

“Right. Just don’t draw too much attention, alright.”

“Whatever…” Lace looks around, checking for the creatures.

Zeb turns behind her, seeing that Cherry is slacking behind.

“Cherry, come on, don’t fall behind!”

Cherry runs towards them, walking next to Zeb. Lace takes her arm off of Zeb’s neck, letting it rest by her side.

For a while, they don’t find anything, only running into a few other groups of quartzes.

“When are we going to find those damn creatures?” Lace groans, throwing her head back.

“We’ll find them. Also, I didn’t think you’d be a sadist.” Cherry says, slightly jokingly.

“I’m not. I just want to get it over with and get back to my job in the kindergarten.” Lace refutes, pointing her finger as a gesture.

“Whatev-“

CRASH!!

The three gems all stop moving. They look around, attempting to see where the sound had come from.

“What….Was that one of the creatures…?” Cherry whispers , looking around herself.

“Definitely.” Zeb whispers back, stepping forward.

The trio begin to move again, slowly trying to figure out the source of the noise. As they walk around a corner of a hill, they come across a group of quartzes, who are fight against two of those creatures.

“Hey! We’ll help you!” Cherry runs off, reaching out for the group of quartzes.

Some of them take notice of Cherry’s approach, with some being neutral and some being annoyed. Zeb and Lace follow behind her, helping with the fight.

“Come on! Some you guys need to get the other one!” An amethyst yells out, holding up one of the creatures as it attempts to attack her.

The three gems look between each other, all of them not sure to on what to do. Cherry thinks for a moment before getting an idea, a crazy idea.

“Guys… let’s fuse together.”

Zeb and Lace simultaneously gasp, not expecting her to say that at all.

“Fuse?! Cherry, the last time we did, it was an accident!” Lace responds, shaking her head profusely.

“I know that. But, why not help our fellow gems by becoming bigger and stronger?” Cherry puts her hands on Lace’s shoulders, trying to convince her.

Lace looks over at Zeb, who’s been the voice of reason this entire time. But her face says otherwise, she stares off into space and doesn’t say anything.

“Listen, we can’t just be standing here while the others are literally fighting against those things!” Cherry yells at the both of them, making Zeb snap out of her trance.

She look between Cherry and Lace, her eyebrows furrowed. Zeb finally steps forward, putting her hands on their shoulders.

“Come on, Cherry’s right. Let’s just do this and get it over with, just like you said Lace.” Zeb speaks out, smiling at the gems standing at in front of her.

They all nod their heads and within the next second, they all fuse together.

The fusion between the three raises her head, observing the two creatures attacking her fellow gems. She stands up tall and steps forward to the battle.

“Move out of the way!” She yells as she raises her fist.

The gem punches the creature away from the amethyst, drawing its attention to the fusion.

“You… You’re the fusion!” The amethyst exclaims, staring up in awe.

“That’s not important. Continue fighting.” She replies stoically, leaving the amethyst to fight with the other’s.

The creature bolts towards the fusion, trying to bite her. Swiftly, the gem moves out of the way. The creature again rushes at her, this time managing to bite her arm.

“Agh! You stupid bug!” She yells out, throwing the creature aside.

The gem clenches her fist, now irritated. She runs at the creature, punching it into the ground. She punches the creature until she’s sure it’s dead. Kicking its limp body confirms it for her.

“Now we’ve got the other one…” She mutters, turning to the other creature, who’s attacking the other quartz soldiers.

The gem runs over, preparing to attack the creature. As she approaches, she realizes that there’s too many gems in way. The gem thinks for a moment as she gets closer, quickly figuring out a way to not hit the other soldiers.

She manoeuvres out of the way, moving to the back of the creature. The gem grabs the creature by its neck, holding it still.

“Come on! Attack it while I’ve got it stuck.” She tells the soldiers.

The quartz soldiers all begin to attack the creature simultaneously. The fusion struggles to keep the creature from escaping from her grasp. The gems all continue to attack the creature but can’t seem to kill it or at least hit it in a vital area.

The fusion starts to get impatient and puts her hands against the creature’s head, applying pressure. It doesn’t take too long before the creature’s head gets crushed.

“Hey, you can’t be killing all the damn creatures by yourself. We’re all supposed to be getting rid of them.” A gem tells the fusion, annoyed at her.

“Apologies. I’ll go on by myself and leave you all to find the others…” She responds, walking off.

The fusion walks down that valley, looking around for more of the creatures.

Pink Diamond sits at her throne, slowly realizing the action she’s made. She looks down at her desk, her expression completely unreadable. Pink turns her side, seeing that Pearl isn’t there.

“My goodness…What am I doing…?” She mutters, adjusting her hair unconsciously.

Pink stands up, fishing around her desk. It takes a moment but she finds the Direct Diamond Communicator. Pink plants it on her desk, waiting for it to connect her to one of the Diamonds. When it turns itself on, Yellow Diamond is the one to be called.

“Who is calling from the-“ Yellow Pearl grumbles, stopping when she realizes it’s Pink Diamond.

“Pearl, who is it?” Yellow asks her from a distance, her voice stern and annoyed.

“Uh…It….It’s Pink Diamond.” She responds, turning to face her Diamond.

A brief pause happens before Yellow grabs the communicator, putting it next to her as she sits at her own desk.

“Pink, why are you calling me through the Diamond Communicator?” She asks, not bothering to even look at Pink.

“Well…there’s something I have to tell you…” Pink responds, looking down towards her desk.

“Go on then. Or did you call me just to waste my time like always…” Yellow glances at her, her tone cynical.

“No I didn’t. My quartzes have…reported of native species on the planet…” Pink shakes her head, explaining herself.

“And? What did you do about it?” Yellow puts her focus on Pink, resting her head on her hand.

“I….I told my soldiers to….exterminate them…” Pink closes her eyes, awaiting Yellow’s reaction.

Another pause happens, with Yellow turning her head away for a moment. She then turns her attention back to Pink, speaking in a different tone.

“Well, it appears that you are molding into your role, aren’t you Pink?” Yellow says to her, her tone more positive.

Pink opens her eyes, looking at Yellow in shock and disbelief.

“Wait…Really?”

“Yes. Perhaps if you continue to be like us, you’ll be a proper Diamond.”

Pink nods her head, bubbling with joy. Yellow goes back to her stern self, turning her head away from Pink.

“Continue your work, Pink. I must return to my own.” Yellow says, waving her hand dismissively.

The communicator shuts off. Pink stands there, staring off into space. She attempts to contain her pure joy from the praise given by Yellow. As she stands there, Pearl enters the room.

“My Diamond, are you feeling okay?” She asks softly, looking up at her.

Pink doesn’t respond, only staring off.

Pearl doesn’t bother to speak again, not knowing if Pink will acknowledge her. To her surprise, Pink snaps out of it, noticing Pearl is standing next to her.

“Pearl! Oh, I didn’t see you’ve entered the room.” She says in excitement, kneeling down to her.

“Yes….My Diamond-“

“Listen! Yellow said that I’m becoming like the other Diamonds! That I’m being like who I’m supposed to be! Isn’t that great?!”

“Of course it is…that’s wonderful, my Diamond.”

“It’s more than wonderful! Yellow has never praised me like that! If me acting like her is what makes her happy, then maybe……maybe they’ll actually see me as a Diamond and not as ‘Pink, the screwup’ anymore.”

Pearl doesn’t know how to respond, only staring up at Pink Diamond.

“Well…My Diamond, perhaps we should look at th-“

“Not now. Can you please show me how many of those creatures are left?” Pink asks her.

Pearl projects a screen from her gemstone, trying to find the rest of them.

“I don’t have an exact number but I can estimate that atleast 4-6 are left on the planet.”

“Thank you. I want more quartz soldiers to be looking for them.” Pink stands up tall, walking to her desk.

“My Diamond, I do believe that more quartz soldiers should form by tomorrow.” Pearl follows her, trying to keep the mood happy.

“Wonderful. But, for now, how about you tell me about the progress of the colony?” Pink sits at her throne, smiling at Pearl.

Pearl lets out a sigh, making another projection. She shows the current progression on the colony, which sits at close to 30%”

“My Diamond, I do believe that the terraforming you suggested will be necessary to continue your colony.”

“I know. I just don’t know how Blue and Yellow would react to my idea.” Pink remarks, leaning her head on her hands.

“Which is?” Pearl tilts her head.

“I’m still think of getting a group of Bismuth’s to go and terraform. There isn’t any water on this planet so that’s the next best option, isn’t it?”

Pearl thinks for a moment before she responds;

“Yes, if there isn’t any water, I suppose that having Bismuth’s doing it would be the next best option.”

“Right. Then, I’ll need to get some of them sent here…”

“Understood, My Diamond. I’ll accompany you to-“

“No. You need to stay here, okay?” Pink stops her, raising her hand,

“Oh, do you need me to help the colony while you’re away?” Pearl asks curiously.

“Yes. I’ll only be gone a few hours.”

“Understood, my Diamond.” Pearl bows her head, walking back to the desk.

Pink leaves and walks to the warp zone, preparing to go to Homeworld. She looks back, her thoughts trailing off. She comes to her senses, stepping onto the warp zone, teleporting to Homeworld.
