Work Text:

Tim walked in the door, tired from a long day as watch commander. The smell of dinner cooking hit him as he set his keys and bag down, kicking off his shoes by the door.

“Lucy? I’m home,” Tim called out, looking for her as he stepped further into the house.

“In the kitchen!” She hollered back.

Tim rounded the corner, smiling when he saw her standing at the stove, stirring something in a pan. When she noticed him, she quickly dropped the spatula and came around the counter to kiss him hello.

He pulled her in tightly, kissing her deep since he missed her at the station today.

“Mm.. I missed you, baby,” he whispered onto her lips.

Lucy giggled as she pulled back, “You literally saw me all day!”

“Once or twice in passing is not all day, babe,” Tim replied, tilting his head in a know it all gesture.

Lucy leaned up and gave him another quick peck, “I missed you, too.”

“What are you cooking for dinner? It smells good,” Tim said as he tried to step past Lucy to look at the stove.

She grabbed onto his biceps, stopping him from moving into the kitchen. “Uh, dinner will be ready in a minutes!”

He glanced down at her, noting how wide her eyes had gotten which he thought was strange. Why was she acting so weird about the kitchen, he wondered.

“Can you fold the laundry from that basket on the table? I just pulled the clothes out of the dryer. They really need to be folded before the wrinkle!”

Tim quirked an eyebrow at her explanation, Lucy never made such a fuss over the laundry and wrinkles. In fact, it was him who usually folded him as he took the clothes out of the dryer. Maybe he was finally rubbing off on her.

“Sure, I can fold them. You go finish cooking,” Tim agreed.

He moved over to the table, noticing that the basket of clothes wasn’t very tall so he’d be done quickly and still have time to set the table. He folded a few items, then pulled out a thin, rectangular cloth. ‘Huh, that’s a weird washcloth’ he thought to himself. It was probably something new that Lucy had bought online, she tended to try new trends.

He folded more pieces before he came across a medium sized piece of soft fabric. He held it up, wondering what it was… could it have been torn off of a blanket they’d previously had? Or a towel? He was so confused.

With the strange half blanket in hand, he turned toward the kitchen to ask Lucy what it was when he his eyes caught on a small article of clothing still in the basket.

He froze, his breath stilling as he slowly reached a hand in and pulled it out. Suddenly, his heart was beating rapidly, blood rushing to his ears as his brain registered what it was.

Caught between the fingers of his right hand was a teeny, baby onesie with the phase “new boot” written on the front of it.

Tim stared, his eyes reading the words over and over again. “New boot” meaning… a baby?

Suddenly he turned to Lucy, who was now standing at the edge of the counter, watching him. She wore a shy smile, her arms folded over chest, tears shining in her eyes as she lifted a shoulder and said, “Surprise?!”

Tim swallowed thickly, realization hitting him suddenly. It was their baby… Lucy was pregnant. With his baby. Instantly tears filled his eyes as he walked back to Lucy, gathering her in his arms.

“A baby, Luce?? We’re going to have a baby?!”

Lucy pulled back slightly so he could see her nodding yes.

He pulled her back in tightly, kissing the side of her head. His heart jumped for joy, fireworks going off inside his brain.

He was going to be a daddy.

“How long have you known?” He asked her.

Lucy pulled back, her hand automatically moving to her lower belly.

“I found out yesterday when I thought the pickles and ranch chips tasted awful. I knew something was different then, but I wasn’t expecting the test to come back positive so quickly!”

Tim shook his head, he could still barely believe it.

“This is the best news ever, Luce. I love you so much.”

He pulled her in, kissed her hard and hugged her tightly.

“I love you, too, babe.”

Lucy pulled back, clapped her hands and said, “Let’s eat, I’m starving!”

Tim laughed, figuring that she probably was extra hungry now with a baby on the way. He sat down at the counter and couldn’t help the chuckle that slipped out when Lucy set the plate down in front of him.

Baby peas, baby carrots, new potatoes and little pieces of meat sat on the plate.

“What? I had to have a back up plan in case you missed the clothing hint- the burp rag, baby blanket or onesie!” Lucy explained.

“You’re going to be a great mommy,” Tim said softly, leaning in to kiss her on the cheek.

Lucy smiled at him, then held his hand as they ate their baby dinner.
