Hunger Is No Beast

Summary:

Intern had gone awhile without a proper meal and it was really starting to get to them. When they try to get something to stave off the hunger their true nature is seen.

Notes:

I’m mildly obsessed over this fandom right now.

Want to mention a quick head cannon for this story that I couldn’t see a place to fit mention of in the writing itself. Anomalies don’t have to eat Animals, it just happens to be one of the best sources of nutrition for them, Anomalies have a extremely fast metabolism as a result of the semi-shapeshift capabilities and generally need much more food. The amount of food needed for an anomaly to be of healthy condition is extremely high, way beyond most Animals capabilities to obtain. Along with this the knowledge of this isn’t widespread, meaning very few anomalies are in a position to get enough sustenance to not starve. The further starved an anomaly is, the weaker and more obvious they get.

Chapter 1: The suffering chapter

Chapter Text

They tried to ignore how the hunger clawing at the back of their mind flared up as they took a sample of blood. Desperately they tried to push back the thoughts of tearing into the fleshy body of the yellow dog laying in the medical bed before them as they waited for the machine to process. Under their breath they repeated the promise they made to themselves never to kill an animal as they tried not to let their internal struggle show on their face.

The short wait for the machine to process felt all too long, the time the computer needed to load all the data made the wait worse, by the time the symptoms finally loaded onto the screen their head was throbbing, feeling as if it were on the verge of splitting open.

Low sugar and dehydration, with that they knew what to get and so they rush out of the room to retrieve the supplies. Moving to one shelf they grab an IV drip, then moving to another they grab maple syrup, with both items in hand they rush back to the patients room. They hand the syrup to the patient before moving to set up the IV. There was a small snap as the patient opened the lid, an immediate growl of hunger comes from their stomach as the sweet scent hits them, thankfully the patient didn't look over to them to see the drool that began flowing down their chin at the smell. Finishing setting up the IV they immediately bolt out the room and slam the door behind them.

Their breathing is rapid, the hunger feels agonizing, but there is still one more patient left to treat. Forcing a deep breath they grit their teeth and move towards the room holding the last patient. As they grab the handle for the door the smell of iron became apparent to them, the patient in this room must have been bleeding. Their grip on the door’s handle tightens, their jaw unwillingly parts open to unveil rows of razor teeth. They shake their head and turn away from the door, they need food NOW. They stumble over to the shelf holding the bottles of maple syrup. They would definitely get in trouble for taking some of the bottles, but whatever punishment they get, it won’t be as bad as what will happen if they’re found out as an anomaly, there was no way they could convince the others of their innocence. The only other staff on duty was Secret Agent, so their actions wouldn’t be noticed for a while, as he didn’t take stock of the supplies, at least not to their knowledge. Grabbing a bottle they opened the top and-

A shot rang through the air.

In an instant, searing pain flashed through them; They let out a shriek as they collapsed to the ground. Everything immediately went fuzzy, the world darkening around them. They could barely think, but it didn’t take much thought to know what happened. They had been seen as an anomaly, by the worst possible person as well, anyone else and they could have at least tried to run. Faintly they heard his footsteps drawing close as shadows closed in over their vision as what they were certain would be their death took them.
