Chapter Text
Michael had started hanging with the lost boys a few weeks ago and has gotten used to a lot of their strange quirks.
He could deal with the blood and the upside down sleeping and Marko's pigeons.
But he still wasn't totally sure what was going on between you and David. It had taken him a few days to realize that there was something different between the two of you but afterwards it felt so obvious. You and David are close, sometimes he felt like the two of you could have entire conversations with just looks.
So by now he was reasonably sure that you and David were dating. He wasn't sure why you didn't make a thing of it. Maybe you just assumed that he already knows or the whole social stigma around it just made you not want to make a huge deal of it. He could understand that.
Currently he was lounging on one of the couches of the cave, looking over at Paul and Marko who sat a little away, quietly talking to each other, probably gossiping.
"Hey guys? I've been wondering. Since when are (y/n) and David dating?"
They both looked over at him for a moment before Paul starts laughing like it's the funniest thing he's heard this decade. Marko at least only looks highly amused. "They're not."
"What do you mean they're not?"
Marko stretches out on the floor "They've had this… thing for like 20 years now. They're not commited or anything, and won't really show much affection. They're just…together without really being together, you know?"
"…why?"
"Why does David do anything? Who knows. Just don't ask him about it. He gets really weird about it for some reason. But that's David to you."
Michael doesn't ask about it again. Although it never fully slips his mind.
· · ─ ·✶· ─ · ·
It's a warm midsummer night. You decided that you needed some time for yourself, claiming a small part of the beach and just watching the waves softly hit the sand.
The last months had been a little rough on you.
First you had gotten Star.
You hadn't liked her. You know it was unfair towards her. She seemed nice and was pulled into all this shit as well. You really did try to be as pleasant as possible. You weren't rude towards her just…well fuck it. Her and David's thing had bothered you.
Laddie came in a bit after that. You had liked the little guy. He was a sweetheart and Dwayne had been great with him. Maybe you would have liked him more if David hadn't just got him for Star.
Michael's cool. You weren't quite sure about him at first. But he ended up fitting in surprisingly well.
And then Max got killed. And Star and Laddie left.
The Emerson's still hung around but apart from that everything slowly returned back to normal in Santa Carla.
Things should feel right again. Everything should be fine. But over the last months something had changed between you and David. Something that had been the same for decades.
There's steps behind you on the sand and you feel someone sitting down next to you. "Why so glum, handsome?"
"I'm not in the mood, David"
"I've noticed. You've been grumpy" he glanced over at you. "Come on, sweetheart. I thought we talked to each other."
You don't really want to talk. What would you even say?
'Yeah I know we've been casual for years and I was fine with it but now I've just gotten jealous'?
God you were acting absolutely pathetic. Like a love sick fool. And about David out of all people.
"Did I do something?" For just a moment you feel like David's voice sounds strange. It's a tone you haven't heard in a good long while. You wouldn't call it soft but it was…damn close.
"No no. I'm just…being an asshole."
"So nothing new then?"
You can't help chuckling softly, lightly hitting his arm "Jerk"
"Ouch" he rubs his arm even if you know that it can't have had hurt. "You're so violent today" he smirks
"Yeah yeah, Romeo. Keep it in your pants."
Your cold dead heart almost feels like it's fluttering again, being so close to David again. It feels like an eternity ago that the two of you had the chance to just be alone. Just the two of you.
He looks back at the waves. For a moment you just watch him. Since you've known him there was something…ethereal about David. He just seemed too beautiful for this world. Everyone you've ever known was instantly captivated by him. And who could you blame really?
You're…scared. Of drifting away from him. Of losing a part of your soul that had been buried so deep within your chest it almost hurts.
But maybe it hurts even more to be so very close to him and knowing that his heart won't ever belong to you. Even if you wish for it.
You love him.
It's a strange realization to have. For a while you weren't sure if David could love. Sure he loved the boys, that wasn't a question. But sometimes you had thought that he was so far removed from his humanity that romance was something out of the question.
Maybe it was just something you made up in your head because he didn't love you.
And that ached.
David moves next to you, getting back up and patting some of the sand off his coat. "Come on. Let's get back before the boys get into trouble." He holds his hand out to you.
After a moment you reach out and pull yourself up to your feet. Maybe you grip his hand a bit harder than you need to.
He doesn't let go of your hand either as you both talk to his bike.
"Don't worry, sweetheart. I'm sure we can find something to lift your mood"
You get up on the bike behind him and hold on tight while the wind blows in your face.
You love David so damn much. And by now resigned yourself to live with a broken heart for the rest of eternity.
