Summary
Jayce sits straight, small bundle still in his arms, stiff and far away. There is a dark blue envelope on the table in front of him decorated with gilded crossed keys. Panic grips Viktor. Somehow, they have been found out. They will be dragged back to their world and he will be executed or imprisoned, separated from his family. With a stunning clarity he didn’t know he possessed, Viktor understands that he does not want that. It should feel like some kind of breakthrough, years of guilt suddenly recontextualized and repackaged. It doesn’t. He fights the urge to pick up Mena and run. He knows he physically can’t, he knows it would be too much to explain to her, no matter how clever she is. But. most important of all, he cannot survive without Jayce and Jayce is frozen.
“Dada?” Mena calls out when Viktor does nothing but hold her hand too tightly, keeping them stuck in the doorway.
Jayce blinks quickly as if waking from a dream. He turns slowly, his blank face breaking into a false, brittle smile when he sees them.
OR
Jayce and Viktor fall into old habits as the past comes calling.
