Work Text:

Coley was supposed to wake up excited. She was supposed to wake up and get ready for the day. A special day. She was supposed to have Sonya over, and they were going to have a day to themselves (Courtesy of her dad leaving early that morning to sell his jewelry at some convention). Instead, she wakes up and the light streaming into her room seems way too bright, there’s a pounding in her head, and the back of her throat burns every time she swallows. Great.

Coley manages to stumble out of her bed and to her computer.

Roleycoley87: r u still coming over today?

Screw whatever sickness or bug she had caught. She was going to pretend like she was perfectly fine so she could get her perfect day with her perfect girlfriend. She creeps back towards her bed, dramatically flopping onto it, hoping to shut her eyes for a few minutes while she waits for Sonya's response and wills her headache (and sickness in general) to go away.

——————————————————————————————————————————-

Muffled knocking echoes in the distance. Coley blinks slowly as she regains consciousness. Shit. She glances at the message on her computer that Sonya sent an hour ago;

Sonyatsunrisex00x: duhhh! i’ll be there soon!! can’t wait 2 c u <3

Sonya’s most definitely here and she has yet to put on an outfit or do her hair and makeup. Briefly, she contemplates whether she could manage accomplishing it in five minutes, but decides against it (her big T-shirt and sleep shorts should suffice). The trek downstairs is painful, between her pounding headache and aching muscles, she wonders if she can push through the entire day pretending as though she’s fine.

Before unlocking the door, Coley takes a deep breath, hoping she looks healthy enough that Sonya won’t even have to suspect that she's sick. She slowly pulls the door open and there Sonya stands, her hair slicked back into a ponytail, sporting a cute pair of jeans paired with a flowy pink top. Ugh. She totally should have gotten ready. Sonya is beaming, but her smile gradually drops as she glances over Coley’s flushed face, lack of outfit, and tiredness behind her eyes. Before Coley can even argue that she is fine, Sonya questions her with the utmost concern,

“Coley are you sick?”

“No, no, absolutely not,” Coley unconvincingly rasps out.

Sonya steps into the house and places her hand on Coley’s forehead before Coley has the option to protest.

“Hey!”

“Oh my god Coley, you’re burning up!”

Instantly, Coley counters with a measly excuse.

“I was just sleeping under a lot of blankets. I swear Sone, I’m fine!”

Sonya narrows her eyes at her, “Nicole. Tell me how you really feel.”

Of course, she had to pull the full name card.

“Ok fine, I feel horrible, but today was our day together. Alone. If I suck it up, we can totally still go out.”

Sonya appears unconvinced, but she leans over to kiss Coley on her warm cheek and mumbles into her skin, “Ok, how about you get ready, and we can see how you feel after that.”

Coley relishes in Sonya's touch and nods, “Deal.”

They slowly climb the stairs to Coley’s room, Sonya trailing behind Coley. Around the 7th step, though, the room begins to spin around Coley. She wavers on the step, attempting to regain her balance. Sonya was immediately beside her grasping her waist.

“Baby, are you okay?” she said, her voice laced with worry.

Now, Coley didn’t know if she was dizzy from her sickness or the pet name Sonya had called her.

“Let's get you to bed,” Sonya says, helping her up the remaining stairs.

Coley all but collapsed into her bed, Sonya immediately pulling the covers up over her and smoothing her hand over Coley’s hair a few times before getting up and carefully padding out of the room, but before she could get to the stairs Coley was croaking out a pathetic,

“Please stay with me.”

She wasn’t expecting Sonya to agree, but she really hoped she would. When Coley was sick in the past, she typically had to take care of herself. Her mother had tried her best (sort of), and she assumed her dad would have stayed with her today if he had known she was unwell (although she can’t forget how he never could have been there for her previously when she was sick). But all Coley wanted right now (maybe all of the time) was Sonya, Sonya, Sonya.

“Of course I’ll stay with you”, Sonya replied as she continued down the stairs.

It was said with so much tenderness, so much certainty, that tears prick in the corner of Coley’s eyes.

Sonya returns and hovers over her before gingerly placing a cold washcloth over Coley’s forehead.

“Where do you keep your medicine?” Sonya asks quietly.

“There should be some under my sink in the bathroom.”

She hears Sonya shuffle towards her bathroom. She’s then being handed 2 pills and a glass of water, and she takes them before lying back down again.

The brunette feels the bed dip on the other side of her and then feels arms pulling her until she's half lying on top of Sonya. Sonya pulls the washcloth off of her head and begins to languidly draw circles on Coley's back. Coley feels herself slowly drifting off.

“I’m going to get you sick,” she mumbles.

She feels Sonya shake her head as she says, “No you won’t. I’ll have you know I have an extremely good immune system, and if on the off chance I do get sick, getting to take care of you will be worth it.”

Coley sighs contentedly into Sonya's neck, and the last thing Coley remembers before falling asleep is the feeling of a quick kiss being placed on her forehead.

The brunette stretches as she wakes up for the third time that day. Her headache was already getting better, and she thinks her fever has even broken. She blindly pats the bed around her but finds no Sonya beside her. Coley treks downstairs and spots Sonya in the kitchen hovering over the stove. She leans against the doorway, and Sonya turns as she sees her.

She grins, “Hi sleepyhead.”

“What are you doing in the kitchen,” Coley asks skeptically. After dating Sonya for a few months, she knows that her girlfriend shouldn’t be anywhere near the vicinity of one (i.e., the burnt cookies incident).

“Wow! Rude! Not even a hey?”

“Sorry sorry,” Coley says giggling, already feeling a bit better after talking to her girlfriend.

Coley moves behind Sonya and wraps her arms around her waist as she props her chin on Sonya’s shoulder.

“I’m making you a true delicacy that should have your sickness gone in an instant,” she jokes with an air of faux confidence.

Coley laughs into Sonya’s neck.

“Calling Ramen a delicacy is questionable, but… I’m glad to see nothing is burnt.”

“You’re so lucky you’re sick right now,” Sonya mutters.

——————————————————————————————————————————-

They finish their (unburnt) Ramen and end up on the couch “watching” some random movie that’s on the T.V. But watching really means that Sonya is giving commentary on the movie every other minute, and Coley is half listening (her focus directed more towards Sonya’s voice than anything she’s actually saying).

Coley’s head is in Sonya’s lap, with her fingers running through Coley’s hair mindlessly as she drones on about the movie. Coley turns her head slightly to glance up at her as she talks. Damn. She’s so pretty.

“Coleyyy. Earth to Coley.”

“What!”

“You are staring so hard, what’s up?”

Coley answers truthfully, “Nothing's up, you’re just really pretty.”

Sonya throws her head back bashfully and groans, “God Cole you’re gonna kill me!”

Sonya glances down at her again, and Coley smirks after seeing the red tinge to her cheeks.

“Seriously Coley, you can’t say stuff like that right now… it makes me wanna kiss you.”

Coley feigns confusion, “And why can’t you?”

Sonya pushes Coley's shoulder, “You’re sick dummy!”

“True. But I do remember earlier you saying you didn’t care if you got sick.”

Sonya hums, “I did say that didn’t I?”

Coley sits up and nods.

Sonya leans in and presses her lips against Coley's in a chaste kiss. Resting her forehead against Coley's, she whispers, “Feel better now?”

Coley responds by kissing her again and again and again.

——————————————————————————————————————————-

They order takeout together as the evening creeps up on them. Eventually, they settle on the back patio, so Coley can get fresh air (and maybe so they can watch the sunset together). The sky is pink and golden and beautiful (not as beautiful as Sonya, Coley muses). She contemplates the day as she pokes at her food, all of the patience, kindness, and care Sonya had poured over her.

“Sone?”

Sonya glances over at her, “Yeah?”

“Thanks for taking care of me today, no one’s really.. done that for me before,” she says honestly, “Also, sorry for ruining our day together.”

Sonya reaches out and grabs Coley’s hand.

“Oh Coley, this was the least I could do, you deserve to be taken care of and so much more, and don’t apologize about today, I loved getting to take care of you. I’m just glad you’re feeling better.”

Coley pulls Sonya in for a searing kiss after that, then rests her head on Sonya’s shoulder, and they sit there, enjoying the silent company of each other.

——————————————————————————————————————————-

They fall asleep that night tangled together (after Sonya doted over her for the umpteenth time that day). Coley’s arm was slung loosely around Sonya’s waist, her face was pressed against her back. And despite still being slightly sick Coley smiles to herself because she thinks she’s actually never felt better.
