Chapter Text
The club stayed after school for rehearsals, the band has a gig at a local club next Friday. They will perform three songs, one is Starlight, the other two is requested songs.
After rehearsals were done, everyone packed up and went their ways, Luke would be staying over at Zander’s so they walked together. Jake insisted on Hailey coming with him to his house so he could show her his new game he bought, he wanted them to play together. After the 5th begging Hailey agreed to come with him and they started walking together.
”It’s Friday anyway, it’s not like we got school tomorrow Hailey.” Jake said. Hailey groaned, “I know I know, it’s just…whenever I go to your house Zander questions me about what we did. Its getting annoying, what does he think we do? I tell him we are not hiding anything!”
…
“Oh I didn’t know that..you don’t have to come if you are uncomfortable with being around me Hailey.”
“Wha- I didn’t say that Jake, its all cool with you. Zander just reads too much slow burn fanfictions and thinks something will happen between us.”
…
“Do you think something will happen between us?” He asked not intentionally.
“What.” Hailey turned to look at him, heat rising in her cheeks. Jake was looking at the ground, she could see his cheeks flush a bit. Hailey looked forward and cleared her throat. “I-I don’t think so..why did you ask?”
“Oh- just forget it haha” but she couldn’t forget it. They walked in an awkward silence after that ‘till they got to Jake’s house.
He opened the door with his keys. “Is no one at home?” Hailey asked in confusion. “Oh no no, I like to not bother them since I have keys” Jake said, opening the door and holding it for Hailey then closing it after her. “Mom! We are home!”
”We?” Jake’s mom(I forget her name) peeked her head from the kitchen, “Oh hello Hailey! Come inside I was just making dinner.” “W-well I’m not staying too much, Jake just wanted to show me his new game or something.” Hailey said with a nervous laugh, she has always been nervous around his mom, she doesn’t know why. “Oh why not honey, you like potatoes and chicken? Stay for dinner!” Jake’s mom said, she really liked Hailey, probably because she is the first girl that Jake brought home and she thinks that Hailey is very beautiful and smart and perfect for Jake. “I should ask my parents, but I would love to stay for dinner”
Her parents said yes, which was not what Hailey was hoping for. Don’t get her wrong, she would love to stay for dinner just like she said, she just doesn’t want Zander to bite her head when she comes home.
-“What did you two get up to?”
-“What did you guys talk about?”
-“Was he close to you?”
-“Did he touch you in any way?”
-“Did you guys kiss? Eugh please tell me no!”
Yeah answering those questions every time was pretty tiring. “My parents said I could stay.” “Perfect!! Jake why don’t you two go to your room and wait there ‘till I finish here?”
Why specifically his room? Hailey thought to herself while she followed Jake to his room. As soon as Hailey stepped a foot in the room Jake closed the door and spoke quickly, “Look my mom might say some weird things about us, I’m sorry about that, just ignore her comments okay?”
“What would she say?” Hailey got confused but then it hit her “Ohh, got it”. As Hailey sat on Jake’s bed, he grabbed his new game from his drawer and shows her very excitedly, “We need to play this! It has multi player choice! Whatd’ya say Hails?”
Hails? That’s a weird nickname. “Uh yeah sure, gameboy” wink. A slight pink on Jake’s ear after that wink, its rare for Hailey to wink at him or flirt with him. Hailey seemed to not notice that, “Oookay then when are we playing it?”
”Wait you want to play?” Jake asked, he thought she didn’t want to play with him. “That’s why I came, silly” Hailey chuckled. Jake blushed from embarrassment, “Yeah right..what about right now? We can play until my mom calls for us!”. “Okay”.
They played for an hour, Hailey beating him every time. There was a nice atmosphere, giggling and elbowing each other.
”That’s so unfair! How is it possible that you beat me every round! You haven’t played this game before!” Jake was pretty mad, not at her or anything, he was embarrassed because he was the one that insisted on playing it and still lost.
“Heh, must be skill issues” Hailey said so full herself, Jake rolled his eyes at that. “Sure, alright, whatever you say princess. But I am still not convinced that you didn’t cheat!”
”Jake! Hailey! Dinner is ready!”
They practically ran to the kitchen, they both haven’t eaten anything since school lunch and all that gaming got them hungry. The smell of oven-baked chicken was so good. They sat down on the dinner table and started putting food on their plate, Milo was already eating, he looked amazed by his mother’s cooking. “Hailey, honey, don’t be shy put some more” Jake’s mom said as she put more food on Hailey’s plate. “Oh no this is enough for me, thank you” she said with a small smile. They all ate as some rom-com played on the tv on low volume.
“Mom this is amazing thank you!” Jake complemented her cooking. “Eat more Jake” she said as she tried putting more food on his plate but he already grabbed his plate and got up, “Nah I’m full, I will eat at night if I get hungry though!”. “You are not staying up late Jake!” She was always mad about Jake staying up all night playing games, her son was gonna be blind in a few years!
Jake looked at Hailey’s empty plate and glass, “Are you done Hailey? Get more if you wa-“ “Oh no I’m full, thank you so much Ms. Sterling, the potatoes was delicious!” Hailey interrupted him as she got up and was about to grab her plate. But Jake was quick, he grabbed her plate and glass and place them in the sink.
“Do you wanna continue our game? You can stay over if you want to Hailey” Jake was hoping she would say yes and they would play video games all night, but knowing Hailey she would scold him for staying up late and go to sleep early. “Uhm thank you but I think I should get going now Jake, maybe next time though!” She said. “Oh that’s fine, is your parents gonna pick you up orrr?” He said, disappointed. “Nah my house isn’t far away from here I could walk!”
”Are you sure sweetheart? I can give you a lift?”. “Ah no I kinda wanna listen to some music while I walk hehe..” she laughed nervously. “Okay all good then!” Jake’ mom said, she has finished her plate too and started cleaning table. “Jake walk her to the door say goodbye then come help me“
Jake followed Hailey to the door, “You know, your mom could be a chef” Hailey said, she opened the door and got out and turned to Jake. “Heh yeah..thanks for staying and playing with me Hailey. Cya next week?”
“Cya Jake!” She turned around and started walking, just as Jake was about to close the door, Hailey remembered something she wanted to tell him. She turned around and reached her hand towards him, the door slammed on her hand.
A sudden loud, painful scream. That door was very heavy.
“Hailey!” Jake shouted and turned around, just to see Hailey on the ground crying, holding her fingers in pain.
”Hailey what happened?!” Jake sat down beside her, trying to understand what could have happened under two seconds. He noticed her holding her fingers, they looked purple. She was sobbing so hard, Jake couldn’t make out the words coming out of her mouth. “Did the door shut on your hand?”
All he could hear was a small “yes” between her sobs. “I thought I heard a scream, everything go- Hailey!!” Jake’s mom rushed beside her. “What happened Jake?” She looked mortified. “The door slammed on her hand, they look pretty bad mom, should we go to the hospital?”
“Get me my keys.”
Jake rushed inside and got the car keys while Jake’s mom helped Hailey get to their car. “We are going to the hospital okay sweetheart? Everything’s gonna be okay!” She of course can’t send Hailey home like this. Jake closed the door, leaving Milo home alone “We will be right back!” He shouted out to Milo.
Jake’s mom was going on 50, Hailey has calmed down but it was still so painful for her, but at least she could speak now. “I-I’m sure I b-broke some fingers..”
Jake looked at her in worry, “Hey don’t say that, I’m sure you’ll be okay..”. “She is right Jake, we shouldn’t be surprised if the doctor says she broke some” Jake’s mom said, which she regretted so fast, “Mom!!”. Hailey chuckled at his reaction to his mom, Jake quickly looked at her, seeing Hailey laugh while tears were still running down her cheeks, she still managed to look beautiful, he reached his hand out for her cheek and wiped away her tears. Which gained him a very confused but flustered reaction from Hailey, he smiled.
Jake’s mother parked the car and rushed them inside, they took Hailey for an X-ray. Turns out she broke her index and middle finger, the others were fractured a little bit. They put her hand in a splint to keep everything still while her fingers healed. Of course Hailey was complaining about it and being so grumpy after she learned they have to stay on for about four to six weeks. But she has a gig next Friday! Thank God it was her right hand(my hc is that she is left handed).
While Jake’s mother was talking to the doctor, Hailey called her dad and explained what happened to him, Jake’s mother already said that she would drop Hailey off so everything was all good, except her not being able to use her right hand.
Eventually they got to Hailey’s house, she was pretty tired so Jake didn’t bother making her talk to him with saying goodbye or apologising. “What the hell Hailey!!” Zander yelled after seeing her hand. “You stay over for dinner, this is what you come to home with? What the fuck did he do?”
”Zander..he did nothing!” Hailey tried convincing him that it was the door and it wasn’t his fault for not holding the door. “Do not defend him! He should have held the do-“ “Zander.” Shannon cut him off, she was angry too, but not at Jake. “How about a little comforting your sister instead of blaming that poor boy, he is probably feeling terrible and guilty!”
Zander sighed, he hugged Hailey. “Is it still hurting?”. “Yeah..” Hailey answered. “I’m sorry sis, I know it’s not his fault I-I just..I hate to see you hurt!”
A little “awhh” came from their parents, Zander shot them a look. “Lets go.” Zander said, dragging her to his room, Hailey got confused on why they were going to his room instead of hers or separating their ways. One thing Zander forgot was, Luke was still in there. “Hey Hai- Hailey!!” Luke ran to her and took her hand. “What happened? Are you okay? Does it still hurt? Tell me you didn’t break any! How did this ha-“ “She broke two, apparently Jake’s door slammed on her hand because he didn’t hold it” Zander said, rolling his eyes, don’t get him wrong he does care about his sister he is just mad at…someone, or you could say he doesn’t know what he is mad at.
”Are you gonna be able to perform at the gig?” Luke asked. “Ah the gig! Hailey!” Zander got worried that she wouldn’t be able to play bass when Jake would be singing by himself. “I’ll be fine I guess. The worse thing we won’t play the bass! Its not like people would notice it” she said.
Zander sighed heavily, “Alright president”. After a minute of silence Hailey spoke “Sooo I’m going to my room?” “Not so easily” Zander had some questions that were meant to be answered by Hailey, but I guess not today. “Bye.” Hailey stormed off to her room and locked the door.
She leaned on the door and stared at her hand, How the fuck am I gonna play bass like this? When she finally sat down on her bed and checked her phone, that’s when she saw 4+ messages from Jake.

”Hailey are you feeling good?”
”I’m so sorry I should have held the door or something”
”Why aren’t you answering, are you mad at me?”
”Are you gonna be able to play at the gig?”
”Sorry for asking that ofc your health comes first”
”Princess?”
God how clingy can he be?!
I’m okay Jake and idk if I will be able to perform with my right hand like this
She threw her phone at the pillow, but just a few seconds later a new notification popped up.

“Thank God, for a second I thought you were ignoring me”

”Right… well anyways, are you feeling better?”
First, there is no word such as “anyways” second, yeah i am, thanks for asking
“Ofc Hailey! Uh see u on Monday?”

Time check, ten pm. I wanna sleep. Hailey quickly changed into her pajamas and threw herself to the bed. It didn’t take her more than five minutes to fall asleep
