Chapter Text

When Nobara Kugisaki first arrived at Jujutsu High, she thought she'd figured everyone out within the first week.

She came from no prestigious clan, no inherited techniques passed down through generations, no arranged alliances or political marriages. She was simply an alpha from a quiet countryside town where people were straightforward. If two people spent every waking moment together, everyone assumed they were in love. It was that simple.

So naturally, she concluded that Megumi Fushiguro and Yuuji Itadori were together.

It made perfect sense.

Megumi, an alpha from one of the great sorcerer families, carried himself with quiet confidence. He rarely smiled, rarely spoke unless necessary, and seemed annoyed by almost everyone.

Almost everyone except Yuuji.

Yuuji, on the other hand, was impossible to ignore. A 19 year-old omega with soft features and an even softer personality, he floated through the school with an almost impossible kindness. He laughed easily, thanked everyone for the smallest favors, and somehow managed to brighten every room simply by walking into it.

Nobara noticed the little things. Megumi unconsciously matching his pace to Yuuji's whenever they walked across campus. The way Yuuji always chose the seat beside him in class without thinking.

How Megumi silently handed him bottled water after training before taking one for himself. How Yuuji leaned close whenever Megumi explained something, listening with complete trust.

There was nothing overtly romantic about it, that was precisely why Nobara believed it.

It looked lived in.

Sometimes she'd catch Yuuji looking at Megumi when the other alpha wasn't paying attention. She mistook sad longing for love.

Satoru Gojo was thirty-eight years old, impossibly talented, impossibly loud, and entirely too comfortable invading everyone's personal space. Nobara had seen him drape himself over Nanami, sling an arm around Utahime just to irritate her, and steal snacks from students without asking.

She dismissed his behavior as simply... Gojo being Gojo.

He teased Yuuji more than anyone else.

Pinched his cheeks, messed up his hair and called him cute almost daily. Yuuji would puff his cheeks in protest before laughing anyway. It seemed harmless but annoying, but Megumi would always look mad, and Nobara wondered why Megumi let his boyfriend be so close to another alpha.

Until one rainy afternoon.

Training had ended early because of the weather, and the campus felt unusually quiet. Nobara had forgotten one of her notebooks in the classroom and wandered back through the empty corridors, expecting no one to be there.

The classroom door was slightly open.

She pushed it wider.

At first she didn't understand what she was seeing.

Yuuji was sitting on top of one of the desks near the windows, one leg hanging still rather than swinging, the rain tapping softly against the glass behind him. His uniform jacket had been discarded over a chair, leaving him in nothing but his white shirt with the sleeves carelessly rolled to his elbows.

Gojo stood between his knees. Then Gojo reached up, brushing a thumb across Yuuji's cheek as though wiping away something invisible.

Yuuji didn't lean in so much as fail to pull away.

His eyes closed for the briefest second, more like a flinch than comfort, before opening again with a faint, strained curve of his lips that didn't quite reach his eyes.

Gojo smiled back but there was none of his usual theatrical grin. Their lips met in a slow, familiar kiss as though they'd done this countless times before.

Yuuji's hands hovered uncertainly before settling against Gojo's chest, not pushing him away, but not drawing him closer either.

Gojo's hand slid naturally to Yuuji's waist, fingers curling around him with an ease that came only from long familiarity. He pulled him a little closer, enough that Yuuji lost his balance for a moment.

A small, startled sound escaped him, quickly swallowed as he stilled, shoulders tightening instead of relaxing.

Gojo only held him more securely.

Yuuji's hands rested lightly against the older alpha's chest, not pushing him away..again, simply existing there as though they belonged like this was simply another ordinary afternoon.

Nobara stepped back before either of them noticed her.

She stood there for several long minutes staring at the wooden floor, replaying the image over and over until it finally settled into something she could understand.

It turned out Yuuji wasn't dating Megumi. He was engaged to Satoru Gojo.

Everyone at the school knew Gojo had accepted a political betrothal years ago when he was 25, one arranged between two  powerful families. Nobara had never cared enough to ask who the omega was.

She hadn't imagined it would be Yuuji.

The realization made countless moments fall into place. Gojo always knowing exactly where Yuuji was, what he was doing and most importantly why Yuuji always looked somewhat distant around him.

For the first time since arriving at Jujutsu High, Nobara realized she knew almost nothing about the people around her.

.................................................................................................................................

Movie night had been Yuuji's idea.

He'd appeared outside Nobara's room just after dinner with an armful of convenience store snacks, three terrible horror DVDs, and the sort of smile that somehow convinced people to say yes before he'd even asked.

By midnight, empty chip bags littered the floor.

The room smelled faintly of buttered popcorn and instant ramen.

Nobara had claimed the floor immediately, dragging every pillow she could find into a nest directly in front of the television. Behind her sat the couch, where Megumi had taken one end without complaint. Yuuji settled beside him, knees tucked beneath a blanket despite insisting he wasn't cold.

The films blurred together.

Yuuji laughed at scenes that clearly weren't meant to be funny, and even Megumi's expression softened every now and then.

It felt...normal.

For a few hours, there were no missions, only three first-years wasting an entire night. ometime after three in the morning, Nobara drifted asleep. She wasn't sure what woke her. A sound so soft that it barely existed.

The television had finished playing hours ago, leaving only its dark screen reflecting the room in muted shades of blue from the menu.

She couldn't see the couch directly, only its reflection. At first she thought Yuuji had simply leaned against Megumi after falling asleep.

Then Megumi moved.

One hand lifted carefully to Yuuji's face, brushing away tears Nobara hadn't even realized were there.

Yuuji tilted his head forward.

Their foreheads rested together for a long moment before the distance disappeared entirely.

It started hesitant, almost clumsy, like neither of them quite believed they were allowed to do this, like they were both waiting for the world to interrupt them.

Yuuji’s breath hitched just before their lips met, Megumi didn’t pull away. Instead, he leaned in just enough to answer it, steady and grounding, his hand tightening slightly where it rested against Yuuji’s cheek.

Yuuji made a small, broken sound into the kiss, something between relief and grief, and his fingers curled into Megumi’s sleeve like he was afraid he might disappear if he let go.

When they pulled apart, Yuuji's shoulders trembled. He lowered his head immediately, both hands covering his face as though ashamed.

His voice reached her only in broken pieces. "...can't..." a shaky breath. "...I don't..."

Then, so quietly she almost missed it, "...I don't want to marry him."

Megumi looked toward the floor where Nobara lay asleep. His eyes lingered there for only a second before returning to Yuuji.

Megumi didn't tell him to stop crying, he simply pulled him closer.

Yuuji folded into the embrace without resistance, his forehead tucked beneath Megumi's chin as though he'd done it a hundred times before.

Megumi's hand rested against the back of his head, fingers slowly combing through pink hair.

Neither of them spoke for a while.

The silence between them carried the kind of familiarity that came only from sharing the same impossible grief for far too long.

Nobara lay perfectly still. When morning came, Yuuji was already in the kitchen making breakfast, smiling brightly enough to fool anyone who hadn't been awake the night before.

Anyone except Nobara.

.................................................................................................................................................

The Gojo estate was unlike anything Nobara had ever seen.

The moment they stepped through the enormous wooden gates, it felt less like entering a family home and more like walking into a piece of history. Stone pathways wound through carefully maintained gardens, white lanterns hung from maple trees in preparation for the festival, and servants moved quietly between guests dressed in formal kimono.

Everyone seemed to know exactly where they belonged well everyone except Nobara.

She caught sight of Yuuji before anything else.

He had changed into a blue-and-white kimono embroidered with pale silver waves that caught the afternoon light whenever he moved. It suited him almost too well, making him look softer than usual, younger somehow.

Across the courtyard stood Gojo. His kimono carried the same colors, not identical, but unmistakably made as a matching set.

Only then did Nobara realize it hadn't been a coincidence.

Megumi arrived a moment later, dressed entirely in black.

Standing beside Yuuji, the contrast was almost startling. The dark fabric made the blue and white seem even brighter, while Yuuji's cheerful smile softened Megumi's otherwise severe appearance.

For a brief moment, the three of them looked almost ordinary.

Then someone spoke.

"Fushiguro."

An older alpha Nobara didn't recognize approached with a polite smile that never reached his eyes.

"It isn't appropriate."

Megumi looked up.

"The omega betrothed to the clan head shouldn't stand so closely beside another alpha during the festival."

The words were delivered casually as though they were discussing the weather, not a person.

Megumi's expression didn't change. He simply stepped back, just one step, as if he had done this before many times. The space between him and Yuuji suddenly felt much larger than a single pace.

For the smallest instant, disappointment crossed Yuuji's face before the familiar smile returned, practiced enough that almost no one would have seen the difference.

Almost no one, except Nobara.

Lunch was served in one of the inner gardens beneath blooming wisteria. By some small miracle, the three first-years managed to find a quiet corner away from the endless conversations between clan elders.

Yuuji seemed lighter there. He laughed while picking at his food, telling stories neither Nobara nor Megumi had heard before.

"I used to spend hours outside," he said, smiling to himself. "There was this huge garden behind the estate. They renovated it."

He described climbing the same old tree every summer, trying to catch dragonflies, pretending the stepping stones were islands surrounded by lava. Making up games simply because there was no one else to play with.

He laughed as he remembered it.

Every story began the same way.

I was by myself.

I'd play in the garden.

I'd hide behind the trees.

I'd make little forts.

There were no cousins, no friends, no siblings chasing after him. Just an enormous estate and a child finding ways to entertain himself. Then, almost as an afterthought, Yuuji smiled a little wider.

"And once or twice a year, Satoru would come. He'd stay for a day if he wasn't busy with work."

Yuuji laughed quietly. "He always complained that I cheated whenever we played tag.".

Nobara realized every happy memory involved the same pattern. A seven or ten year old Yuuji and a twenty something Gojo.

Before Nobara could ask another question, movement caught her eye.Gojo had finally finished speaking with the surrounding clan members. Without hesitation, he crossed the garden toward them.

Conversations around them shifted almost imperceptibly as people made room.

"Found you."

He stepped in behind Yuuji and wrapped his arms loosely around him from the back, chin over his shoulder.

"Come on spend some time with me..let's go to our bedroom? I missed you."

Yuuji's smile returned as quickly as it always did. He stood, apologizing to Nobara and Megumi before following without complaint.

Within moments, the blue-and-white kimono disappeared into the crowd beside the clan head.

Megumi watched until they were out of sight.

Only then did he lower his gaze back to the untouched food in front of him.

Neither he nor Nobara spoke for a long time.
