Summary
Although they call him the “Chicken Man”, Shane is more like a stray cat. He uses harsh words in place of claws to protect himself from newcomers, refusing to acknowledge any of his basic social needs.
This tactic finally backfired when he started pining over the town’s new farmer, in the weeks after he shooed her away with his typical aloofness. He’s too proud to apologize, too awkward to properly flirt, but too stubborn to forget.
This episodic tragicomedy is all about sad sack Shane, and his internal, emotional suffering. He’s cursed with, what Gus calls, futenmouf syndrome. Everyday is spent lingering around the farmer’s short-lived memories, waking up in need of cold showers, stewing in jealousy, and agonizing over her polite indifference.
His only hope is for the author to take pity on his haplessness and give him the happy ending he may not deserve. A chance but never a promise.
