I'm Here at the Beginning of the End (The End of Infinity with You)

Summary:

A role swapped Ezra and Sabine get to take a moment while on the way to Peridea

or

If a role swap would still have Ezra be mildly Force sensitive, I could see him still have a connection to nature, which means he might need to still summon the purgill, which means Ezra and Sabine might both go to Perdia

Notes:

Highly recommend reading the role swap day of my cozy Kanera week fics and this Tumblr post to fully understand my ideas for this au lol.

Title comes from Last of the Real Ones by Fall Out Boy

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Do you think we lost them?” Ezra whispered.

Sabine closed her eyes for a moment, and he could almost feel her mind reaching out through the bond she swore they had. Her shoulders relaxed with a sigh. “Yeah. They have no clue where we are. The plan is to just wait until we sneak out for food.”

“Well, it’s a good thing I raided the Ghost’s panty.” He opened his bag, revealing quite the collection of ration bars, along with other supplies he had the good idea to grab. “Should last us at least four days. Our water canteens will need to be refilled at least once before then, though.”

“I think we could probably handle that. But good job thinking ahead.” She grinned, making her eyes sparkle in the dim light. “It was almost as smart of a decision as having us hide in the vents.”

He looked around at the metal box they found themselves in, just tall enough for them to sit up in and located above a maintenance hallway they had only seen mouse droids pass through. “To be fair, that’s my first solution to every problem.”

“And explosives are mine, yet you always complement me on my use of them.” She raised a facetious eyebrow. “Are you saying those compliments were exaggerations?"

“No, not at all,” he quickly backtracked. “You have to be seriously creative to know when to use which kind and how and all that. I just told us to get into the climate control vents without a plan. You were even the one who directed us here!”

“Not entirely. Remember when you told us to turn right before the bucketheads started shooting?”

He rolled his eyes. “That was one life or death moment when I operated on instincts."

Sabine smirked, and he groaned at the implication.

“I’m seriously not Force-sensitive.”

“So what do you call the Purgill?”

“A weird connection with nature.” He folded his arms. “They wouldn’t have even come if you hadn’t told them to.”

“I didn’t tell them a thing,” she corrected. “All I did was amplify what you were trying to tell them.”

“Okay, so they can’t hear a thing without you.”

Her head titled. “I was too busy restraining Thrawn to do a thing with the Purgill once they arrived. Telling them to take us away…that was all you.”

“Oh.” He winced. “That means that neither of us have a clue where we’re going, huh?”

“Nope.”

“Or how long we’ll be gone.”

“I think that just depends on if we can find a way away from where it is we land. Which will be really easy if we land near civilization, and really hard if we land on an uninhabited planet.”

He grimaced. “Considering I told them to take us somewhere where Thrawn couldn’t hurt anywhere…”

“Uninhabited planet it is,” she spoke with sarcastic enthusiasm. “Think everyone will be okay without us?”

“I mean, I left Jacen a whole fresh meiloorun, so he’s set for life.” They both devolved into a fit of giggles, but stayed quiet enough to not let the sound carry.

“And then Kallus finally got with Zeb, so he’s just fine too,” she added with a grin.

He grinned back. “Only took them two years of a slow burn.”

“A love story for the ages,” she cackled, before sobering. “Do…do you think Kanan will be okay?”

“I don’t know,” he answered truthfully. “Obviously he has…everything, and that wouldn’t change if we were there.”

“He wouldn’t have to worry if his other son was okay,” she countered.

“I guess that’s true,” he conceded. “But at the same time, I think he’ll feel better that his kids are watching out for each other.”

“You’re way more his kid than I am.”

“That’s because I started living with them when I was twelve,” he pointed out. “They both loved you like you were their own kid, even if you still have your parents. And, I love you too.”

Sabine rolled her eyes, and stayed looking away when she responded, “I guess I love you too, or whatever. And I’m glad you’re here with me.”

He playfully pushed himself against her. “I knew you did. And I’m happy we have each other too. I mean we’re gonna have, what, a couple years in the wilderness of some planet with no company but each other and no communication to the outside world?”

She snorted. “Well, when you put it like that it sounds just peachy.”

“Aw come on,” he threw an arm around her. “It’s gonna be great.”

Notes:

Don't worry, Kanan takes the Ghost and finds them like a year after the fall of the Empire, so they're not out there for ten years
