Summary
Merope Gaunt is one of the last representatives of the House of Gaunt, pure-blood wizards obsessed with blood purity. Unwilling to mix with other wizards, let alone "mudbloods," they do not hesitate to marry among cousins to preserve the bloodline.
Years of repression, cruelty, and conditioning inevitably led to the downfall of her ancestors. With their fortunes squandered and nothing left for the last descendants, Merope is forced to live with her mentally disturbed father and brother, who make her life miserable.
In love with a Muggle-born, she plans to leave her horrible family and start a new life. Unfortunately, things do not go as she would have liked. Her suitor does not share her feelings, so she is willing to do anything to make him fall in love with her. It is only later that she discovers she is pregnant and raises her son alone, for fear of reprisals from her family.
