“Is that coffee?” Nani asked, desperate hope glimmering in her eyes as she entered the kitchen
“Almost ready,” David promised.
Nani let out a breath and walked towards him.
“STITCH!” Lilo shrieked, and Nani jumped backwards just in time to dodge the alien and the girl chasing him barrelling past her.
“LILO!” Nani yelled. “NO—”
“Breathe,” David said, crossing the kitchen to take her hands.
Nani closed her eyes and inhaled, focusing on the feel of David’s hands around hers, on the smell of coffee and the sound of it burbling in the pot, on the slight breeze coming through the open window and the smell of the ocean it carried.
David tugged gently on her hands, and she let him lead her across the kitchen, still not opening her eyes. One of his hands left hers, to be replaced a few moments later with warm, solid, ceramic.
Nani sighed and opened her eyes.
David smiled at her and folded her hands around the mug.
“The tide will go down again,” he said, squeezing the hand he was still holding. “We’ve just got to wait it out.”
Nani smiled up at him, then reached around to set the mug down on the counter. She put her arms around his neck. “Maybe coffee wasn’t the pick-me-up I needed this morning after all,” she said, leaning into him.
“I’m good at pick-me-ups,” David said, and before Nani could process the mischievous glint in his eye he’d swept her legs out from under her. She squealed and shoved playfully against his chest, then slumped dramatically and reached back towards the coffee.
He laughed and maneuvered her around so she could pick it up, and she took a sip, savoring its bitterness and the caffeine she could already feel making her more ready to face the day. “Just right,” she sighed contentedly, nestling into his arms.
“Share a taste?” David asked, pulling her closer.
Nani took another long sip from the mug, then leaned up and kissed him. His arms tightened around her, and they stayed that way for a long moment, two…something crashed on the other side of the house, and Nani stiffened. David laughed softly against her lips and set her back on her feet, before kissing the top of her head.
“We can deal with that after coffee,” he murmured.
Nani opened her mouth to argue, but the teasing smile on his face, the smell of the coffee in her hand, the warmth of his hand lingering on her waist…“After coffee,” she agreed, and leaned in to kiss him again.
