It is dawn when Vash’s fever breaks, and another hour until he gasps awake. The Vash that resurfaces is a younger one, the rest of him still lost in fever haze.
“You stayed?” he breathes. His eyes don’t leave Nai, not even once.
This version of Vash doesn’t remember the whole of his past, but the pain in his eyes is as raw as ever. His tears haunt Nai.
Nai takes Vash into his arms. The positioning is awkward with their bigger bodies now, but once, they hugged like they breathed. “I stayed,” Nai whispers and vows to never leave.
