Work Text:

Hear my luring call, love!

Hunter was swimming in the unfamiliar cove, having ended up there by mistake after an unexpected wave having pushed him there while trying to escape.

He was swimming around in panic soon enough, seeing no way out of the predicament. Not even a swirl of a jump had had the affect it usually did with Hunter simply landing back in the water with a loud splash.

It was that loud splash having caught someone’s attention, a fisherman having come to get his daily catch, Cody. But seeing a surprise waiting for him in the familiar cove he loved to fish in, the very place where he usually sat all morning long to get his food,  well, Cody was rather taken by the sight.

Cody, the former pirate having hung up his commander’s hat and now retired to the small cottage just up the hill close by wasn’t about to let this, person in dire straights to without help. As it was, when Cody could see someone in distress splashing about there in the waters, he was immediately rushing towards the sounds, thinking someone had fallen in.

But as Cody reached the spot, he could see, that it was indeed someone having fallen in, a human, but not quite so.

It was in essence a rather gorgeous man with long locks of hair hanging over his shoulders, a body muscular and lovely but… with… a fishtail?!?

Cody had heard all the stories of merpeople, of course. But those had been just that, stories told in the darkness of a dead calm night when the ships were stuck and there was nothing else to do to pass the time.

Cody though, decided to help the pretty creature. No matter what, former pirate of not, Cody always helped those in need. He was a gentleman pirate after all.

“Heya there, can I… be of some assistance?”

Cody wasn’t sure if the language was something they shared, but keeping his tone calm he hoped it would help.

Hunter stopped his panicked movements and stared at the older gentleman at the shore having arrived to his rescue?

A rather nice looking man with a beard and dark hair with streaks of grey splashed in there for the effect. He had a scar on his face and guess, Hunter knowing about these humans, some trustworthy most not, something about his face made Hunter nod. Deciding to trust the man after all.

“Okay then, you wandered here by accident?”

Hunter nodded only.

“So, maybe, I can help you get back to the sea?”

Cody having seen some creatures end up in the pond right adjacent to the seas previously.  Alas its own body of water just the same, with some of the waves bringing them in. Having helped a few in his life time as well, alas never a merman. A first this was for sure.

“Okay, I have some gear which will help you across the ledge.”

Cody having devised a sort of a winch to make the crossing easier, with a container rigged into it. The smaller critters having fitted in and thinking perhaps this fish-man could do so too, at least to a point?

“Okay, wait here. I will get it.”

Cody rushed back to his house and soon enough was hauling a cart with his gear in it.

Hunter, having waited and swam around in the pond was intrigued. After all, he knew humans could… be rather interesting if they were amenable and he had the power to walk on land if he so desired. At least for a while there. That was of course if the human was interested to have any kind of relations. Cody though, seemed more set on rescuing Hunter and get him back to the seas than himself and that made Hunter a tad sad.

Oh well, can’t have them all, he thought.

Hunter watched as Cody setup the gear and then, soon enough, he was hoisted into some kind of basket and lifted across the ledge and into the sea.

Splashing in there for a spell, Cody looked rather pleased as Hunter swam around in the familiar waters once again, not wanting to leave just yet.

“Well then, my good merman, happy swimming to you!”

Cody wished the merman Hunter, waving his goodbyes simply, as Hunter swam off into the sea.

Hunter though, well, he was kind of dazed from the rescue, and yet, feeling slightly disappointed.

Can’t win them ell, dear Hunter! Can’t have them all.

*

It was late in the evening, and Cody tired of the days adventures, was prepping for bed.

His thoughts though, were back on the pretty merman he had helped back to the sea.

“A shame.” Cody said out loud to himself, as he had found the merman rather gorgeous, but they were different species, so there was that, but it was an experience he would not soon forget.

Getting under covers, sleep calling to him.

Just then, Cody felt and then, heard it. The familiar creak of the front door, followed by soft footfalls padding against the hardwood floors.

Cody froze in his place, reaching for the knife on his night stand.

It was then when he felt it. The touch on his shoulder. Having appeared without a warning.

Cody already knew whom it was, though.

“You’re back.”

“Just for the night.” Hunter spoke softly.

Cody turned around in his bed, the merman, now a fully realised human and totally naked man the merman had taken as his form and was standing there, dripping water.

Cody smiled only, his wish having come true after all.

“Then a night is all I can really ask for.”
