Work Text:
Ilya was in the backyard playing with Anya when he heard a scream out of the kitchen.
“Fuuuuuck! Ouch!”
Anya perked her ears up and completely ignored the ball flying over her head.
“Okay babygirl. We are gonna go check on dad.”
Together Anya and Ilya made their way into the kitchen. Shane was holding his hand above the sink and there was a dark red trail of blood dripping into the sink.
“Oh my god, Shane! What happened?”
Anya was already at Shane’s feet licking at his calves.
“The knife fell from the counter and I tried to catch it. That’s so dumb!”
Ilya looked around for the culprit and found the knife on the kitchen floor with a trail of blood leading to the sink.
“Okay. Show me.”
Ilya stepped closer to Shane and Shane opened his hand. There was a deep cut in the palm of his hand.
“It’s not so bad.”
“It looks really bad, Shanya. Should I call an ambulance?”
“No I don’t need an ambulance,” Shane appeased.
“Okay. Then I will call mum. She will know what to do.”
Ilya was spiraling a little bit. He had seen enough injuries on the ice but he never liked the blood. And now it was his Shane whose blood was on the floor. Shane was still calm after the initial shock.
“I don’t need you to call Yuna either.”
“What do you need then?” Ilya asked desperately.
“First I need you to pick up the knife from the floor so Anya doesn’t hurt herself. Then I need a fresh kitchen towel and you have to tie it around my hand. I don’t think I can do it with one hand only. And I need you to stay calm. I’m fine. It’s just a little bit of blood,” Shane tried to reassure Ilya.
“Okay. I can do that. But that’s not just a little bit of blood. You still need a doctor and probably stitches.”
“Yeah. Probably. But it will be okay.”
Ilya picked the knife up from the floor and dropped it into the sink. Then he collected a fresh kitchen towel and wound it carefully around Shane’s hand.
“You have to tie it tighter to stop the bleeding.”
“But I don’t want to hurt you, Lyubimyy.”
“It’s not really hurting and we both want the bleeding to stop, don’t we?”
“Yes okay.”
Ilya tied the towel tighter and flinched when it pressed onto Shane’s hand. Shane stayed perfectly still, not even pulling a face.
“That’s good. Now we will clean up the floor and then you can drive me to the hospital.”
“Okay. Yes. We will do that.”
In the next second Shane had pulled another kitchen towel out and was kneeling on the floor scrubbing. Anya sniffed a little closer at his hand.
“I’m alright babygirl. Just a little cut.”
Anya seemed to be content with that and trudged over to the corner of the kitchen to lay down. Ilya was hovering over Shane still in shock.
“I can do that. You don’t have to clean the floor. You are injured, Shanya.”
“Not so much that I can’t clean my blood from the floor.”
Shane had already cleaned all his blood up and stood up again.
“I will put this in the hamper and then we can drive to the hospital.”
“I will come with you.”
“I don’t need assistance to throw a kitchen towel into the hamper.”
“I don’t know. Maybe you will faint because of the blood loss. Should I get you something to eat so your blood can regenerate? Maybe I should still call Yuna?”
“Ilyusha. Look at me.”
Ilya registered that he was still looking at the floor where Shane’s blood had been. He looked up into Shane’s eyes and saw Shane smile a little.
“I am fine. I feel completely normal. Yes, my hand hurts a little but it’s not so bad. We will driver over to the hospital, they will give me some stitches and then everything will be okay.”
“Okay,” Ilya nodded. “But I will go with you everywhere you go, okay?”
“Yes. You can even hold my hand.”
Shane held out his uninjured hand and Ilya took it. They brought the kitchen towel to the hamper, said goodbye to Anya and went out to the car. They had to separate their hands for a few seconds but when they were seated in the car Shane held his hand out for Ilya again. At the hospital, Ilya never left Shane’s side. The doctor explained that Shane needed to get three stitches and then proceeded to numb bis hand with anesthetic and stitched his skin back together. Through it all Ilya held Shane’s other hand. Ilya flinched every time the needle penetrated Shane’s skin. At the end the doctor put a band aid on the wound and explained how to care for the wound.
„You will come back in two weeks and I will pull the stitches. Until then please try not to use the hand so much. And no hockey.”
“That’s okay we are in the off season,” Shane explained.
On the way back home Ilya still held Shane’s hand. At home Ilya and Shane were sitting on the couch and Ilya was cradling Shane’s injured hand carefully in his own hands. He kissed the band aid softly.
“Don’t worry, Lyubimyy. It will all be fine. It was only a little cut.”
“Yes, thank you. I was a little bit scared at the beginning.”
“I know. But I knew that everything would be okay. So I wasn’t worried too much.”
“Sure, baby. That’s exactly what happened,” Shane laughed. “But thank you for staying by my side.”
“Always, my Shanya.”
