Work Text:
The Battle Frontier looked different in winter.
Ash noticed it the moment he stepped through the gates.
The wide stone paths were dusted lightly with frost, and strings of lights had been hung along the rails and rooftops of the various facilities.
Lanterns glowed warmly against the early evening sky, casting soft reflections across the cold metal structures of the Frontier.
It felt strange.
But good.
Pikachu sat comfortably on Ash’s shoulder, tail flicking as he looked around.
“Pika.”
Ash smiled.
“Yeah. It’s been a while, huh?”
The last time Ash had been here, he’d been chasing Frontier Symbols and battling the Frontier Brains one after another. Every match had pushed him harder, made him better.
And some of the strongest trainers he’d ever faced were here.
Including-
Ash spotted the Battle Tower rising above the others in the distance.
He grinned.
“Think she’s still here, buddy?”
Pikachu perked up immediately.
“Pika!”
Ash had barely taken three more steps when a familiar voice called out behind him.
“Ash.”
Ash turned instantly.
Anabel stood a short distance away,
hands loosely folded behind her back.
Just like he remembered.
Calm.
Composed.
Her long hair shifted slightly in the cold breeze as she watched him.
Ash broke into a grin.
“Anabel!”
Pikachu waved excitedly.
“Pika pika!”
She smiled softly.
“Ash. Pikachu.”
“You’re still here!”
“Yes.”
Ash laughed.
“I was hoping you would be.”
Anabel stepped closer.
“The Frontier has been quiet lately,” she said. “Many trainers are traveling for the winter tournaments.”
Ash rubbed the back of his neck.
“Well… I guess I showed up at the right time then.”
“Yes.”
Her gaze shifted toward Pikachu briefly.
“Though I suspected you might return eventually.”
Ash blinked.
“You did?”
“You rarely stay away from places that challenge you.”
Ash grinned sheepishly.
“…Okay yeah that’s fair.”
For a moment the two of them simply stood there, the quiet evening air settling around them.
The Battle Frontier had never been a loud place.
Even during tournaments, it carried a certain stillness.
Ash shifted his weight.
“So… are you still battling here?”
“Occasionally.”
“Occasionally?”
Anabel tilted her head slightly.
“I have also taken on some responsibilities helping oversee the facility.”
Ash’s eyes widened.
“Really? That’s awesome!”
Pikachu clapped.
“Pika!”
Anabel’s smile warmed just a little.
“You seem well.”
Ash laughed.
“I’ve been traveling like always.”
“Of course.”
She studied him for a moment,
thoughtful.
“You’ve grown stronger.”
Ash blinked.
“You can tell already?”
“You carry yourself differently.”
Ash scratched his cheek.
“…I guess I’ve had a lot of battles since we last met.”
“Yes.”
Her voice softened slightly.
“I would expect nothing less.”
A breeze drifted through the courtyard, rustling the decorations hung between the buildings.
Ash finally noticed them.
“Hey… what’s with all the lights?”
“The Frontier hosts a small winter celebration each year,” Anabel explained.
Ash looked around again.
Now that she mentioned it, he could see it clearly.
Garlands wrapped around railings.
Lanterns strung between buildings.
Even a large decorated tree near the center of the courtyard.
“Wow.”
Ash laughed.
“I didn’t know the Battle Frontier celebrated Christmas.”
“The staff insisted.”
Ash nodded slowly.
“Well… it looks great.”
For a moment they stood quietly again.
Then Ash brightened.
“So!”
Anabel looked up.
“Yeah?”
“Battle?”
Pikachu jumped down from Ash’s shoulder immediately.
“Pika pika!”
Anabel’s eyes softened slightly.
“I suspected that would be your first request.”
Ash grinned.
“Of course!”
“I would be happy to.”
Ash pumped a fist.
“Awesome!”
She turned slightly, gesturing toward the Battle Tower.
“The training floor should still be open.”
Ash started walking beside her.
Pikachu trotted happily between them.
The Frontier lights glowed warmly against the evening sky as they approached the tower entrance.
Just before stepping inside-
Ash paused.
“…Huh.”
Anabel stopped beside him.
“What is it?”
Ash pointed upward.
Hanging neatly above the tower doorway was a small sprig of mistletoe tied with a red ribbon.
Anabel followed his gaze.
“…Ah.”
Ash blinked.
“You know what that is?”
“Yes.”
Ash laughed.
“I wasn’t sure if-”
“The staff explained the tradition earlier today.”
Ash rubbed the back of his neck.
“…Oh.”
For a moment neither of them moved.
Because they were both standing directly beneath it.
Pikachu looked up.
Then back at Ash.
Then at Anabel.
“Pika…”
Ash chuckled awkwardly.
“Well…”
Anabel looked at him calmly.
“…Yes.”
Ash blinked.
“Yes what?”
Her expression remained completely composed.
“You explained the tradition.”
Ash scratched his head.
“…Yeah.”
Her eyes held his.
“And we are standing beneath it.”
Ash’s brain caught up.
“Oh.”
For the first time since he arrived Ash Ketchum had absolutely no idea what his next move should be.
And judging by the small, knowing smile forming on Anabel’s face-
She did.
The mistletoe swayed slightly above the doorway.
Ash stared at it for a second.
Then at Anabel.
Then back at the mistletoe again.
“…Right.”
Pikachu tilted his head.
“Pika?”
Ash scratched the back of his neck.
“So uh…”
He laughed awkwardly.
“That’s… funny timing.”
Anabel didn’t move.
Her expression stayed as calm as ever.
“Yes.”
Ash waited.
She simply continued looking at him.
The same composed, observant look she always had when studying a battle.
Ash shifted his weight.
“…You’re not going inside?”
Anabel tilted her head slightly.
“You stopped walking.”
Ash blinked.
“…Yeah, because of the mistletoe.”
“Yes.”
“You know what that means.”
“I do.”
Ash rubbed the back of his neck again.
“…Right.”
The wind moved softly through the courtyard lights behind them.
For a few seconds neither of them said anything.
Pikachu looked up at the mistletoe again.
Then quietly at Ash.
“Pika…”
Ash whispered back,
“I know.”
Anabel’s lips curved slightly.
“You seem unusually uncertain.”
Ash laughed.
“I’m not uncertain.”
“You paused.”
“I noticed something hanging over the door.”
“You paused.”
Ash exhaled.
“…Okay maybe I paused.”
She folded her hands calmly in front of her.
“Is there a reason?”
Ash pointed upward.
“You know the reason.”
“Yes.”
“And you’re just… standing there.”
“Yes.”
Ash stared at her.
“…You’re doing this on purpose.”
Anabel blinked once.
“I am observing.”
“You’re observing?”
“Yes.”
Ash laughed.
“That sounds exactly like something you’d say in a battle.”
“In many ways,” she replied calmly, “this is similar.”
Ash blinked.
“…How?”
“Two people.”
“Yes.”
“Both aware of the situation.”
“…Okay.”
“And neither one moving.”
Ash stared at her.
“You’re turning mistletoe into a strategy.”
“I am observing the outcome.”
Ash shook his head, smiling.
“You’re unbelievable.”
Pikachu giggled.
“Pika pika.”
Ash took a breath.
“…So if neither of us moves…”
“Yes?”
“…Then we’re just standing here forever.”
“That seems unlikely.”
Ash raised an eyebrow.
“Why?”
Anabel glanced up at the mistletoe briefly.
“Because the tradition has a clear resolution.”
Ash laughed nervously.
“…You’re very calm about this.”
“I am.”
“Why?”
Anabel studied him quietly for a moment.
Then she answered simply.
“Because I trust you.”
Ash blinked.
“…You trust me.”
“Yes.”
“With what?”
“With the moment.”
Ash opened his mouth to reply-
Then stopped.
Because that answer had been so simple.
So sincere.
And suddenly the situation felt very different from the competitive standoff earlier.
There was no challenge here.
No teasing rivalry.
Just quiet expectation.
Pikachu looked between them again.
“…Pika.”
Ash exhaled slowly.
“…You know most people would just laugh and walk inside.”
Anabel shook her head gently.
“Most people are not you.”
Ash scratched his cheek.
“…That’s true.”
The wind stirred again, causing the mistletoe to sway slightly above them.
Ash looked at it.
Then back at her.
“…You’re still not moving.”
“No.”
“You’re waiting.”
“Yes.”
“For me.”
“Yes.”
Ash laughed softly.
“You’re putting a lot of pressure on me here.”
“I am simply allowing you to decide.”
Ash looked at her for another long moment.
Then slowly smiled.
“…You really are different from everyone else I battle.”
“How so?”
“You don’t rush anything.”
“Rushing creates mistakes.”
Ash nodded.
“…Yeah.”
For a moment the two of them simply stood there again.
Quiet.
Still.
Comfortable.
And then Ash finally stepped a little closer.
Not because of a challenge.
Not because of a competition.
But because suddenly-
It felt like the right move.
Pikachu’s ears perked up.
“Pika…”
Anabel didn’t step back.
She simply watched him.
Calm.
Patient.
Waiting.
Ash stopped directly beneath the mistletoe beside her.
“Well,” he said softly.
“…Guess the tradition says we should finish this.”
Anabel’s eyes softened slightly.
“Yes.”
And this time, neither of them hesitated.
The mistletoe swayed gently above them.
Ash stood a little closer to Anabel now, close enough that he could see the way the light from the Frontier lanterns reflected softly in her eyes.
For once, he wasn’t talking.
He wasn’t joking.
He wasn’t trying to fill the silence.
He was just… thinking.
Pikachu shifted slightly on his shoulder.
“Pika…”
Ash exhaled slowly.
“…You know something?”
Anabel watched him quietly.
“Yes?”
“I think I’ve been overthinking this a lot.”
“That would not surprise me.”
Ash laughed softly.
“Yeah.”
He rubbed the back of his neck again.
“It’s just… usually mistletoe is supposed to be like a joke, right?”
“Sometimes.”
“But this doesn’t feel like a joke.”
Anabel tilted her head slightly.
“What does it feel like?”
Ash thought about that for a moment.
“…Like a moment.”
The answer seemed to satisfy her.
“I see.”
The quiet settled again.
But this time it felt warmer.
Less awkward.
Ash glanced up at the mistletoe once more.
“…You’re still giving me the choice, right?”
“Yes.”
Ash smiled a little.
“Even if I walk away?”
“Yes.”
“Even if I don’t?”
“Yes.”
Pikachu leaned forward.
“Pika…”
Ash chuckled.
“Alright, alright.”
He looked back at Anabel.
“…You’re really calm about this.”
“I trust your decision.”
Ash blinked.
“…You trust me?”
“Yes.”
She said it simply.
Like it was obvious.
Ash felt something warm settle in his chest.
“…You know what?”
“What?”
“I think I finally figured something out.”
Anabel waited patiently.
Ash stepped just a little closer.
Now there was barely any space between them.
Pikachu’s ears shot straight up.
“Pika?!”
Ash laughed quietly.
“You don’t have to look so shocked.”
Then he looked at Anabel again.
“…I think you already knew what I was going to do.”
Anabel’s lips curved slightly.
“I had a theory.”
Ash grinned.
“Well…”
He took a breath.
“…Guess you were right.”
And then, for once Ash didn’t rush the moment.
He didn’t overthink it.
He simply leaned forward and kissed
her.
The kiss was soft.
Warm.
Not awkward or sudden.
Just quiet.
When Ash finally pulled back, the evening air of the Battle Frontier felt strangely lighter.
Pikachu stared at both of them with wide eyes.
“…Pika.”
Ash rubbed the back of his neck again, smiling slightly.
“…Well.”
Anabel looked at him with that same calm expression.
But now there was a warmth behind it
that hadn’t been there before.
“That answers the question.”
Ash laughed.
“…Yeah.”
Pikachu finally grinned.
“Pika pika!”
Ash glanced up at the mistletoe again.
“…You know what’s funny?”
“What?”
“We still haven’t battled yet.”
Anabel’s smile returned fully now.
“Then we should correct that.”
Ash grinned wider.
“Now that sounds like a plan.”
And as they stepped into the Battle Tower together, the mistletoe above the doorway swayed gently behind them.
Its job done.
The Battle Frontier courtyard was peaceful at night.
Most of the staff had finished their preparations for the winter celebration, leaving the facilities glowing softly under strings of lights. Snow had begun to fall lightly, dusting the stone paths and rooftops in a thin layer of white.
Ash leaned against the railing near the central plaza, watching the snowflakes drift down.
Pikachu sat beside him, paws resting on the rail.
“Pika…”
Ash smiled.
“Yeah. It’s pretty nice here at night.”
The Frontier had always been intense during battles.
But when everything slowed down, it felt completely different.
Quiet.
Almost calm.
Footsteps approached behind him.
Ash didn’t turn.
“…Hey Anabel.”
She stopped beside him.
“I thought I might find you here.”
Ash glanced sideways.
“You were looking for me?”
“Yes.”
She rested her hands lightly on the railing, looking out across the Frontier grounds.
For a moment they just stood there together, watching the falling snow.
Ash rubbed the back of his neck.
“…So.”
“Yes?”
“That mistletoe earlier.”
“Yes.”
Ash laughed awkwardly.
“…That was kinda unexpected.”
“Many things with you are.”
Ash blinked.
“Wait, what?”
Anabel’s lips curved into a small smile.
“You often act before thinking.”
“Hey!”
“It is not an insult.”
Pikachu snickered.
“Pika pika.”
Ash sighed dramatically.
“Thanks for the support, buddy.”
Anabel glanced down at Pikachu briefly, amused.
Then her gaze returned to the snowy courtyard.
“…You did not hesitate in the end.”
Ash looked out across the Frontier again.
“…I almost did.”
“But you did not.”
Ash nodded.
“Yeah.”
For a moment the quiet returned.
Then Ash glanced at her.
“…Did it bother you?”
“Did what?”
“The kiss.”
Anabel tilted her head slightly.
“…Why would it?”
Ash scratched his cheek.
“I don’t know. I just figured… you’re usually really calm about stuff.”
“I was calm.”
Ash laughed softly.
“Yeah, you were.”
She studied him for a second.
“…Were you not?”
Ash thought about that.
Then smiled.
“…No.”
Pikachu chuckled.
“Pika.”
Ash leaned back against the railing again.
“But it wasn’t bad.”
Anabel’s expression softened slightly.
“No.”
“It wasn’t.”
Snow continued to fall quietly around them.
After a moment Ash pushed himself
upright.
“Well… I should probably head inside before Brock starts wondering where I disappeared to.”
“You are traveling with Brock again?”
“Yeah.”
“Then he will likely already know.”
Ash blinked.
“…Know what?”
Anabel’s smile returned.
“The mistletoe.”
Ash groaned.
“Oh no.”
Pikachu burst out laughing.
“PIKA PIKA!”
Ash covered his face briefly.
“Great. I’m never hearing the end of that.”
He started walking toward the main building, Pikachu hopping after him.
Then he stopped.
“…Hey Anabel?”
“Yes?”
Ash smiled slightly.
“…Next time I come back to the Frontier…”
“Yes?”
“Maybe we start with mistletoe.”
For the first time that evening, Anabel actually laughed softly.
“…Perhaps.”
Ash grinned.
“See you next time.”
He jogged off toward the lights of the Frontier buildings.
Anabel remained by the railing for a moment longer.
Snowflakes settled quietly in her hair as she watched him go.
Then she glanced upward toward the tower entrance.
Where the small ribbon-tied sprig of mistletoe still hung.
Her calm smile returned.
“…Perhaps.”
