Chapter Text
The arena lights flashed a blinding crimson as the bass rattled the stadium floor. Robby Keene stood proud at the front of the Miyagi-Do lineup, his white captain’s gi crisp and his heart beating with a steady, focused rhythm. Beside him, Sam, Miguel, and the rest of the team held their heads high. They were ready for the world stage.
Then, the announcer’s voice boomed over the speakers, introducing the final dojo.
Out of the tunnel marched John Kreese and Sensei Kim Da-Eun, their faces carved from stone. But it wasn't the senseis that made Miyagi-Do completely freeze. Standing directly between Kwon Jae-Sung and the rest of the lethal global recruits was Tory Nichols.
She wore the midnight-black Cobra Kai gi like a suit of armor.
"Oh my god," Sam whispered, her voice cracking as her jaw dropped.
Miguel stepped forward a half-inch, his eyes wide. "She went back to them?"
Robby felt the air leave his lungs. His posture fractured as he stared across the massive ceremony floor. He expected to see grief. He expected to see the crushing sorrow of a girl who had just lost her mother.
Instead, when Tory’s eyes snapped over and locked onto his, there was no sadness. There was no heartbreak.
There was only pure, unadulterated fury.
Her eyes burned with a venomous rage that made Robby's blood run cold. She didn't look like someone who had been manipulated; she looked like someone who had willingly embraced the darkness to survive. She stared at Robby, then at Sam, her glare sharp enough to cut through the noise of the thousands of screaming fans. To Tory, the people standing in white across the arena weren't her friends or her boyfriend—they were the ones who had tried to hold her back, the ones who didn't understand the brutal reality of her world.
Sensei Kim Da-Eun leaned in close from behind, her cold eyes fixed on Miyagi-Do. She whispered something low and sharp into Tory’s ear. "You must remember what they did to you."
Tory didn't flinch. She listened to Kim's words, her jaw clenching tightly as the rage in her expression deepened even further. She gave a sharp, deliberate nod to her sensei, fully accepting whatever dark promise Kim had just made.
Next to her, Kwon Jae-Sung noticed the exchange.
The lethal Cobra Kai captain shifted his weight, a dangerous, arrogant smile playing on his lips. He leaned his shoulder closer to Tory, his eyes narrowing as he glared directly at Robby.
"Let them look," Kwon said, his voice loud enough to carry over the thumping music to his teammates. "We're ready to beat the ones who hurt you."
Tory turned her head to look at Kwon. She scanned the rest of the Cobra Kai lineup—brutal, ruthless fighters who didn't preach about balance or mercy. She looked at him and their team, her true family, who were all nodding back at her in fierce solidarity. They didn't judge her or demand she play nice; they were ready to destroy anyone in her way. A slow, malicious smirk spread across her face, completely erasing the girl Robby used to know.
With that cruel smirk still stamped on her lips, Tory snapped her head back toward Robby. She held his gaze, her eyes promising absolute devastation when they finally met on the mat.
The malicious smirk on Tory’s lips cut through Robby deeper than any physical strike ever could. The girl standing across the arena wasn't the Tory he had held in his arms, the one who tried to find balance with him. This version of her was wrapped in darkness, entirely consumed by the venom Cobra Kai offered.
Robby’s jaw tightened as his chest heaved, a toxic mix of confusion and jealousy burning in his throat. His eyes flicked from Tory to the guy standing entirely too close to her. Who the hell is that? Robby thought, his knuckles turning white. He watched the way the arrogant, sharp-eyed Cobra Kai captain leaned right into her space, and more importantly, the way Tory didn't pull away. She looked completely at ease with him. Comfortable, even. It infuriated Robby that a complete stranger was standing by her side, fueling her rage, while he was stuck on the other side of the stadium, painted as the enemy.
Behind the teen lineup, the Miyagi-Do senseis stood in a tense, rigid row, their eyes locked on the black-and-red banner of Cobra Kai.
Daniel LaRusso shook his head, his face pale as he watched Sensei Kim whisper into Tory's ear. "It’s not just Kreese, Johnny. Look at Kim Da-Eun. They’re feeding her exactly what she wants to hear right now. She’s grieving, she's angry, and they're weaponizing it." Daniel leaned closer to Johnny, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "We need to keep the kids focused. If Robby loses his head over this, the whole tournament is compromised."
Chozen stood with his arms crossed tightly over his chest, his piercing glare fixed entirely on Kwon and the international recruits surrounding Tory.
"They are not just fighters," Chozen murmured, his voice low and steady. "They are wolves. Look at how they circle her. They have given her a pack of monsters. She does not look like captive, LaRusso-san. She looks like leader of the pack."
Johnny Lawrence stepped forward a half-inch, his brow furrowed in deep, agonizing guilt that quickly boiled over into pure anger. He didn't look at Daniel or Chozen; his eyes were glued to Tory's fierce expression.
"This is on us," Johnny hissed, his voice cracking with gravelly frustration as he turned sharply to Daniel. "It’s our fault. We left her alone after her mother passed. We didn't listen to her. We didn't let her fight that day when she needed it most. We shut her down and forced our 'balance' bullshit on her when she was drowning. Kreese didn't have to steal her back, Daniel—we practically handed her to him on a silver platter."
Daniel opened his mouth to argue, but the words caught in his throat as he looked back at Tory's vengeful smirk. Johnny was right, and the heavy realization settled over all three senseis like a lead weight.
Daniel’s face flushed as he turned sharply toward Johnny, his voice a strained, defensive whisper. "We didn't force anything on her, Johnny! Her mother had just passed away. She was in no emotional state to fight a high-stakes captain's match. We were trying to protect her from making a mistake she couldn't take back!"
"Protect her?" Johnny scoffed, his eyes flashing with anger. "Look at her across the mat, LaRusso! She's standing with a pack of international killers. You didn't protect her. You benched her when she was at her breaking point, and now she’s going to use everything she has to destroy us."
Chozen didn't break his stare from the Cobra Kai lineup. His arms remained crossed, his face grim as he watched Tory smirk at Kim's words. "Johnny is right," Chozen murmured, his low voice cutting through the argument. "When warrior is drowning in grief, you do not take away her sword. You guide her hand. We left her in darkness. Cobra Kai gave her fire."
Daniel looked at Chozen, completely stunned, but the argument was abruptly cut short as the stadium speakers crackled to life. Behind them, the Miyagi-Do students had completely stopped looking at the crowd. They had overheard every single word. The heavy silence among the teenagers was suffocating, the senseis' blame fueling a sudden, burning desire in each of them to confront Tory for their own deeply personal reasons.
Robby’s heart hammered violently against his ribs. Johnny’s words ringed in his ears:
We left her alone.
Guilt, sharp and agonizing, twisted in his gut. He wasn't just a teammate; he was her boyfriend. He was supposed to be the one person who stayed by her side, but instead, he had let her walk away into the night. He didn't care about the tournament brackets anymore. He needed to find her in the athlete village, corner her away from Kim, and apologize for leaving her entirely alone when she needed him most.
Next to him, Sam’s knuckles were white. Her fury was mixed with a bitter sense of betrayal. She wanted to confront Tory to demand answers—to ask if their entire truce had been a lie.
Miguel stared at the black gi, wanting to confront her as a friend who had survived that venom, to tell her that making a deal with Kim Da-Eun would only destroy her. Hawk’s jaw was clenched tight, a dangerous spark in his eyes; he knew exactly what it felt like to use rage as a shield, and he wanted to shock her out of it before it was too late. Demetri wanted to confront her out of sheer, terrified disbelief, needing to know how someone who sat in their dojo days ago could look at them with such malicious intent.
Devon, still reeling from the captain's fight controversy, felt a burning need to confront her because seeing her surrender her spirit to Kim Da-Eun felt like a betrayal to everything they had trained for.
Suddenly, the arena lights shifted to a harsh, blinding spotlight centered right on the black-and-red banner. The main commentator's voice boomed over the high-tech sound system, echoing through the rafters.
"Representing South Korea... COBRA KAI! Led by their team captains... TORY NICHOLS and KWON JAE-SUNG!"
Hearing her name made Robby's blood instantly run cold.
Kwon Jae-Sung.
Finally, the arrogant stranger had a name.
Massive, ultra-high-definition screens above the arena flickered to life. The stadium fell into an awed hush as the official team photos for Cobra Kai were displayed. They were breathtakingly impressive—perfectly lit, cinematic, and dripping with high-budget professionalism. Tory and Kwon looked like flawless, terrifying warriors, their expressions sharp and imposing.
When their names echoed through the stadium, Tory and Kwon stepped forward together. Their movements were perfectly synchronized, solemn but dripping with a toxic, unearned arrogance. They held their heads high, completely ignoring the mixed reactions of the crowd, projecting absolute dominance.
As they came to a halt at the front of their formation, Kwon casually but deliberately bumped his elbow right against Tory's.
Robby’s breath hitched in his throat, a cold shock paralyzing his chest. He knew that exact gesture. It was the precise, stylized Cobra Kai elbow-bump handshake that he and Kenny used to do back when Robby was leading the Valley dojo. It was a symbol of brotherhood, of absolute trust, and of shared malice. Seeing Tory smoothly return the gesture with Kwon—her smirk deepening as their elbows connected—felt like a physical blade twisting in Robby's chest. She hadn't just replaced Miyagi-Do; she had completely replaced him, adapting their old loyalty to a dangerous new partner.
"And representing the United States... MIYAGI-DO! Led by captains SAMANTHA LARUSSO and ROBBY KEENE!"
The sudden announcement caught them off guard. Stung by the sight of Tory and Kwon's handshake, Robby hesitated for a crucial second. Caught up in her own swirling anger, Sam accidentally stepped forward before him. Realizing she was entirely out of sync, she hesitated, making their grand entrance look incredibly awkward and disjointed on the center stage.
To make matters worse, the massive Jumbotron switched to Miyagi-Do's official photos. Unlike the cinematic perfection of Cobra Kai, their pictures looked low-quality and amateurish in comparison—taken in a rush with poor lighting that made them look more like a local recreation center group than a world-class martial arts team.
Across the mat, Kwon's malicious smirk grew wider at the awkward display, and Tory’s eyes narrowed into a glare of pure, icy contempt, watching Miyagi-Do stumble before the tournament had even begun.
As soon as the presentation ended Hawk and Sam try to run across the mat to confront Tory, immediately all five of cobra Kai members formed a wall between them and Tory, Hawk tried to push past them and grab her but was violently stopped by Kwon hands and was pushed back bumping into Sam.
“Step back, clown”
“What she's too good for us now?”
“Yes” Kwon smirked which only infuriated Hawk more. Before the situation escalated the tournament officials stepped in and separated them.
The tournament officials did not gently usher the teens away; they practically escorted the shaken Miyagi-Do students directly back to their designated athlete room, warning them that another outburst would cost them their place in the Sekai Taikai.
The moment the heavy locker room door slammed shut, a private meltdown erupted.
"What the hell were you guys thinking?!" Johnny roared, slamming his fist against a metal locker, the clang echoing like a gunshot. "We told you to stay focused, and instead, you launch a pathetic ambush in the hallway?! You almost got us disqualified before we even touched the mat!"
"Johnny, calm down," Daniel interjected, though his own face was pale, his hands shaking as he paced the floor. He turned to the teens, his voice tight. "But he’s right. Sam, Hawk—you cannot let Cobra Kai get under your skin like this. Tory made her choice."
"Because of us!" Robby snapped, his voice cracking with raw emotion as he leaned against a training bench, his head in his hands. "You heard what My dad said out there. We left her alone. I left her alone. I’m her boyfriend, and I let her walk right into the hands of Kreese and Kim Da-Eun. How am I supposed to just 'focus' when she’s standing out there with that Kwon guy, looking at us like she wants to kill us?"
Sam stood by the wall, her arms crossed tightly, staring at the floor. "She didn't just look angry, Robby. She looked like she hated us. All of us. Even after everything we tried to do for her."
"It doesn't matter what she feels right now!" Johnny yelled, stepping directly into Robby’s space, his expression a mix of tough love and hidden guilt. "Right now, she is the enemy. Cobra Kai is the enemy. If you go out there carrying pity and guilt, that kid with the smug face—Kwon, whatever his name is—he is going to put you on a stretcher. You want to save her? You want to apologize? You win the tournament first. You beat them on the mat. That is the only language Cobra Kai understands!"
Chozen stepped forward from the shadows, his voice low, calm, and heavy. "Johnny is right. The snake feeds on your distraction. Tighten your gis. Clear your mind. The tournament waits for no one."
Before anyone else could speak, the locker room PA system crackled to life, a stark, digital chime cutting through the tension.
"All competing dojos report back to the main arena floor immediately for the first event."
The Miyagi-Do teens took deep, ragged breaths, adjusting their white headbands and stepping back out into the blinding lights of the stadium. The crowd was buzzing, and as they took their places on the massive, interconnected center mats, they realized the arena layout had completely changed.
The main commentator’s voice boomed through the rafters, announcing the brutal nature of the first activity.
"Welcome to the opening round of the Sekai Taikai! This year, we begin with a chaotic test of loyalty, strategy, and survival: The Captain’s Elimination Brawl! Four dojos will take the mat simultaneously. Your objective? Protect your team captains at all costs, while trying to eliminate the opposing dojos. If either of a team's captains is touched by an opponent's strike, that entire dojo is instantly eliminated from the event!"
The crowd roared as the four selected teams were called forward: a powerhouse dojo from Brazil, a highly disciplined squad from Japan, Miyagi-Do, and Cobra Kai.
Standing in their corner, Daniel and Johnny hurriedly gathered the teens into a tight huddle. "Listen to me," Daniel instructed quickly. "With four teams on the mat, it’s going to be pure chaos. We play defense. Hawk, Miguel, Demetri, Devon—you form a human barrier around Sam and Robby. Do not break formation. Let the other teams tire themselves out, and we will defend our captains until the smoke clears."
Across the massive mat, the Cobra Kai squad huddled around Kim Da-Eun and John Kreese. Tory’s eyes were narrowed, entirely fixed on the white-clad Miyagi-Do lineup. She didn't need to guess their strategy; she knew exactly how Daniel LaRusso thought.
"They're going to play it safe," Tory said, her voice dripping with venomous confidence as she looked at Kwon, Yoon, and the rest of her team. "They're going to build a defensive wall around Robby and Sam and try to ride out the clock. We don't give them that chance."
Kwon smirked, cracking his knuckles. "What’s the play, Captain?"
"We strike directly and quickly," Tory commanded, her eyes flashing with pure malice. "The second the bell rings, we blitz them before their barrier can even solidify. We break their wall, eliminate Robby or Sam in the first ten seconds, and knock them out of the event completely. Once Miyagi-Do is gone, we turn around and slaughter the other two dojos."
Kwon nodded, his eyes locked onto a distressed Robby across the arena. "Consider it done."
The referee stepped into the dead center of the massive multi-ring mat, raising a hand into the air. The four teams lined up, the tension radiating off the floor so intensely that the crowd fell into a sudden, breathless hush. Robby looked across the distance, trying to catch Tory's eye one last time, but she just sank into a low, predatory fighting stance, her smirk wider than ever.
The electronic buzzer echoed through the stadium, and before the sound could even fade, a brutal blitzkrieg shattered the peace.
Miyagi-Do began moving to form their planned defensive circle around Sam and Robby. But Cobra Kai didn't just rush—they detonated onto the mat.
Demetri, keeping one eye on the Japanese dojo to his left, was completely blindsided. Out of nowhere, Yoon Do-Jin bridged the gap with terrifying, ungodly speed. Before Demetri could even raise his hands to defend, Yoon launched a lethal, spinning back-kick directly into his chest, effortlessly neutralizing him and throwing him off balance.
With Demetri out of position, the defensive wall fractured instantly.
Before Robby could react to Yoon's sudden assault, Kwon materialized directly in front of him. He wasn't aiming for a kill shot; he was a pure, venomous distraction. Kwon launched a lightning-fast flurry of wild, blinding jabs and a sweeping low kick that forced Robby to fully engage, throwing him completely off balance and drawing his focus away from his co-captain.
That was exactly what Tory was waiting for.
Using Robby's forced distraction, Tory breached the broken barrier like a ghost. She materialized directly in front of Samantha LaRusso before anyone else could blink. Channeling all her raw, unfiltered fury and the agonizing grief over her mother, Tory planted her foot and launched a devastating, perfectly placed side-kick straight into Sam’s ribs.
The impact was thunderous. The sheer force of the blow knocked the wind entirely out of Sam, sending her crashing back onto the mat, gasping desperately for air.
“Miyagi-Do is ELIMINATED!” the commentator roared in utter shock.
The entire arena gasped. It had taken a single, devastating second. Robby stood frozen in absolute horror, staring down at Sam gasping for air on the mat, realization washing over him that their entire Sekai Taikai dreams had evaporated before they could even throw a defensive block.
But Cobra Kai wasn't done. They didn't waste a single millisecond celebrating.
While the crowd was still processing Miyagi-Do's rapid downfall, Tory and Kwon pivoted in perfect synchronization, ruthlessly hunting the other two dojos. The Brazilian team tried to raise their guards, but Kwon and Tory blitzed them with a terrifying double-team assault. Kwon feinted high, drawing the male captain's guard up, allowing Tory to deliver a brutal sweeping kick to his legs, while Kwon followed up with a decisive strike to his chest, eliminating the Brazilian dojo instantly.
Simultaneously, the Japanese squad tried to retreat defensively to protect their own captain. They never saw Yoon coming.
Utilizing the absolute chaos on the mat, Yoon launched a spectacular, gravity-defying aerial attack, flying over the defenders and landing a flawless, targeted strike right on the Japanese captain's shoulder.
The buzzer wailed through the arena once more.
"In a historic, record-breaking opening round... COBRA KAI TAKES ABSOLUTE VICTORY!"
The stadium erupted into absolute pandemonium. Across the mat, John Kreese and Kim Da-Eun stood tall, cold smiles carved onto their faces. At the center of the ring, Tory Nichols stood entirely surrounded by her new, lethal family. She looked down at the devastated Miyagi-Do squad, her malicious smirk widening as Kwon raised her hand high in the air, cementing their absolute dominance over the world stage.
