Summary
Once upon a time, Iruka was a child and a tragedy happened to him. In the aftermath, he found comfort in a webnovel called The King's Hound, which followed a boy named Hatake Kakashi and his tragic life, up to his death. Upon reading about his favorite character's death, Iruka was dissatisfied by the ending, wishing that he could have had a happy ending. Of course, Iruka then transmigrates into the world of The King's Hound into a minor character of the same name-- Uzumaki Kushina's ward, who died early on in the novel after trying to take Naruto away from Kakashi. He's given a limited system that isn't worth his spit which tells him to work hard, which Iruka takes to mean change the world.
--
Yet he was lonely for the first time since coming to this world. His mind wandered from study to the book once more, as it always did. Reading all of the materials that Kushina had given him was boring, as though he were rereading them, yet when she spoke aloud it was like new information. Was this some talent passing to him through the prior Iruka? He couldn’t discern how that might be happening. It wasn’t as though he were some omniscient reader who understood the world entirely from reading a book over so long a period. -

“Actually,” Iruka needed to say. “The more I think about it the more that I think I can understand it. If I had everything, I would know exactly as he felt, I’m sure. If we could read those memories together we would find that you’re the most important person in this world to me, for being kind after tragedy. After a child loses so much, how can she bear to have something else taken when that thing has become a sort of representative of what she’s already lost? I might not know as I once did, but I can see it in how you treat me, and I can imagine, based on what you’ve told me.”
“You speak more eloquently than he did,” Kushina tipped her head back and drained her tea cup with a sigh.
“He?”
“He, you, I don’t know. You speak differently, you think strangely, you even hold yourself in a different way. How can you be my Iruka like this? I’m sitting here and talking to a stranger as familiarly as I would to my brother, and I cannot mourn him because you sit here with his face– not even his face, it’s different.”
She was tearing up, her hair floating wildly around her face– the air was thick with static, the overcast weather now threatening instead of calming. His breath caught in his throat– he had tried, he had really tried to be her brother–
“Is the scar really so impactful?” he asked quietly, his voice alien to both of them.
“No,” Kushina said, and the air ceased to be so heavy. Her demeanor became that of herself again. “No, that’s not it. I’m sorry, Iruka. You are the same person, I’m sorry, even if you’re so different that I can barely see it. I just wish that I could say something different, to acknowledge the change, so that I am not the only one that sees differently.”
“I’m still Iruka,” and it isn’t quite a lie, right? “I’m sorry. I don’t want to be like this. I wish I could remember how to act as myself.”
“Fuck, how can I ask you to act any other way then how you’ve been? Whatever happened, this is you now. I still love you, my brother.” She leapt out of her seat and hugged him, dragging him out of the chair and into her arms.
“And of what I remember, what I know, I love you.”
