It was the 29th of September, and the first full week of the school year at Nevermore Academy was just beginning. Although the students had arrived on the 24th, those first few days were mainly dedicated to some fun end-of-summer-break events. On the 25th, the first ever Founders' Pyre was held, while on the 26th, the annual Prank Day was held.
However, classes have now begun.
Ever since he arrived at Nevermore, one of the new students for this year, Pugsley Addams, had been sharing a dorm room at Caliban Hall with a swarmer named Eugene Ottinger, who, as it so happened, was a close friend of Pugsley's older sister Wednesday. While the Addams kids were on break, Pugsley had discovered that he was a Spark: that is, someone with powers to produce an electrical current. More exactly, Pugsley has a voltage of 110 volts DC, just like his Uncle Fester. As soon as Wednesday discovered this, she strongly encouraged Pugsley to apply to join Nevermore Academy.
Thus, Pugsley was now at the library, off to check out a Spanish textbook. One of the classes that Pugsley had decided to take was Spanish, for he wanted to maintain his connection to his Mexican-American roots.
He went over to the bookshelves with the foreign language textbooks, took out a copy of the Spanish textbook, and checked it out, signing his name and date with a dark blue pen. He then went back to the dormitory with Eugene so they can study it together.
After a few hours of studying, Pugsley had an idea.
"Hey, Eugene," said Pugsley, flipping over to the checkout list. "I already left my signature on this book, so why don't I leave some more marks on it?
"What do you have in mind?" asked Eugene.
"Well, I'm thinking that I leave some stripes on this corner," Pugsley explained, pointing to the bottom-right corner of the checkout list page.
"Like the black-and-white shirts you always wear," said Eugene. "Good idea!"
"¡Exactamente!" said Pugsley. He then got out his pen and drew a bunch of curved stripes on the bottom-right corner.
"While we're at it," said Eugene, "why not leave some more fun stuff here?"
"Good idea," said Pugsley. "I'm thinking of leaving a game of tic-tac-toe here." He pointed at an area on the bottom left, right next to the Nevermore logo that adorned the bottom of the page.
"¡Tres en línea!" said Eugene, using some of the Spanish words he knew. "¡Será divertido!"
"Gracias," said Pugsley, who then drew a three-by-three grid for tic-tac-toe, leaving an X on the bottom-right space. "Here's my first move." Pugsley then wrote out the word Sigan! next to the grid.
"I wonder how this will turn out," said Eugene.
"Well, we shall see over the next few days," said Pugsley. "Maybe in a week or so, one of us can check out the book again."
