Chapter 1: pre-1x1

Chapter Text

She still hadn’t unpacked her duffle bags from camp when Shannon had texted her about an emergency, the emergency being that she hadn’t had her period in eleven days and needed emotional support.

Shannon had been freaking out for the past three days and the moment she knew her best friend was home, she rang her.

Kimberly didn’t even start to change out of her bus clothes before rushing out of the house and to Shannon’s.

When she got to the house, the door was unlocked. No sign of Shannon’s mom anywhere in the house, or Shannon for that matter. She found her on the bathroom floor with ruined mascara and tears in her eyes, wearing skin tight leggings and an old band t-shirt.

“Look at the test for me please.” She cried out the moment she saw her best friend.

It ended up being negative.

The white stick with the blue outline of a green screen showed one line, not two. Meaning she was officially without a child. So they celebrated by drinking whiskey from her mom’s locked cabinet.

The whiskey went down her throat hard and raspy, the instant feeling of wanting to swallow water or something else to wash out the taste never went away. She started to mix it with lemonade, and eventually another random alcohol when the whisky started to get noticeably low.

Kimberely stuck her head back to lay against the side of the couch cushion. They sat on the hardwood flooring in Shannon’s living room, watching episodes of a show they already skipped too many in.

Shannon took a sip from the bottle, tapping the glass on the wood as she let it sit in between them. “How was camp?” Realizing she never asked about it.

Kimberly’s mind raced. She had known Shannon since they were babies, basically, but what if she told her what happened at camp and lost a friend?

Just one week ago

Kimberly’s hands were tangled in Liz’s short, but slowly growing out, hair. It’s a straight hair texture but with the salt water still in it from canoeing and the camp air surrounding their cabins, it’s gotten a bit tangled making for small formed curls.

Kimberly took her lips off of the spot she’d been sucking on her neck, a large red spot revealing as a target for her to come back. “I love your hair,” She whispered as she went back and kissed it, gentlier. She traced kisses down her neck to her shoulders, leaving sweet short kisses every piece of skin.

Liz hummed and had her head back so her face faced the ceiling. Her hands were around Kimberly’s neck and she couldn’t pull Kimberly’s lips away from her body to kiss her back, the sensation of the kisses overruled the temptation.

“I love your hair more.” Liz bent down and brought Kimberly back to sit fully up with her lips, locking her lips with hers.

Liz stood up on her knees, towering over Kimberly as she sat on her knees on top of the bed. She moved her rougher kisses, compared to the gentle ones of Kimberly, down her neck to places hidden by clothing. The small, barely noticeable, noises coming out of Kimberly were satisfied as her kisses got tougher.

Liz, accidentally or purposefully, fell onto Kimberly, pinning her down onto the bed as she laid with frog legs and her back straight to the mattress. Kimberly let out a sound that enticed Liz to continue, just to hear that wonderful song one more time.

Liz kissed from her collarbone to her chest, skipping over the intimate parts and lightly kissing her stomach. “You’re so hot Kimberly.” She praised her body, and Kimberly loved the words coming out of her mouth.

“Kiss me.” Kimberly asked.

Liz delivered.

She quickly left her stomach, placing both of her hands beside Kimberly’s body, and fell into the kiss with her. She knew how to work her tongue into Kimberly’s mouth in record time, the positioning of the two girls leading for ease of making out.

Liz’s knee brushed against Kimberly’s crotch, adding pressure and pleasure into the make out. Liz never backed her tongue into her own mouth, if anything she kept getting more into the kiss. When her knee pressed deeper, Kimberly couldn't stop the moan that released from her mouth.

Liz paused for a second that showed she heard, and went back with more intensity. “Fuck.” She bent her head down, releasing from the kiss, “You’re so hot.” She kissed her again.

—

“Kimberly?” She was brought back to where she was.

In Shannon’s living room.

An almost empty bottle of alcohol, which Kimberly drank a lot of.

“How was camp?” She turned to see Shannon was expecting an answer.

She had her head resting on her knees, which were now brought up as a table for her head. Her long brown hair flowing everywhere, tangles and frizzyness combined. Her skin, pale as a newly purchased doll, and small worry lines forming from her creased eyebrows and current frown.

Kimberly’s mind reverted back to where her mouth was. Every thought about camp was moving at a thousand miles an hour, too fast for any of it to compute what she wanted to say.

“It was,” A faint sound of creepy ticking from the mounted analog clock on the wall, “fine.”

Shannon said something, she heard words that didn't enter her eardrums.

On the mantel were photos of Shannon and her mom, an old photo nearing the end of when her family were still together.

Man.

Wife.

Child.

Everywhere she looked it was the normal lifestyle that she wasn’t a part of.

“Kimberly?” Shannon was closer now, she sat on her knees within hand reach if she reached out.

She faced her best friend, the thoughts of camp makeouts, making smores, kissing Liz, making bracelets out of rope, her first, actual, kiss. But, when she looked at Shannon. The eyes of that same kid she made friends with, with the mouth that could curse her out, the nose that would flare with disgust as she yelled.

If she told Shannon, her best friend, about what she did that summer. It could change everything Kimberly knew as life.

All for Liz.

Was it really worth it?

She must have zoned out again, “Kimberly, what happened at camp? I’m confused.” Her hair was tucked behind both ears, she was stressed. She had her hands planted on her knees and was trying to get Kimberly’s attention.

“I kissed someone.” She blurted out.

Vague. Safe.

The hands on her knees went still, Shannon’s eyes shot wide open. She could see the white surrounding her brown pupils, it stayed like that until her eyes got watery and had to be closed.

“What?” She screamed in delight.

Her voice grew three pitches and she stood up to her feet.

She hoisted Kimberly up by her hands, “Who?” She asked first, “No, when?” Her face twitched, “Wait I know when, over camp.” She spoke back to herself, thinking outloud, “Who!” She repeated.

She groaned, she knew she had to tell her best friend but it was too much.

“Liz.” She mumbled, barely over her own breathing.

“Who?” Shannon sat straight.

She looked at her once more, “Liz.” No other explanation given.

It took her a second of long thought, she could see the moment it clicked in her eyes. “Oh- Oh my God.” Her hand covered her mouth.

Kimberly braced for the question she dreaded, “Liz? From school?” Shannon glazed over the glaring new information, focusing on something else.

Kimberly couldn’t help the smile that formed due to her best friend’s actions.

“Yeah. Liz from school.” She paused, “But I can’t be with her now.” Another pause, “It’s too risky.”

Shannon nodded in understandment. “Yeah.” She stared at Kimberly, “Want to pick the album this time?” She changed the topic as quickly as it started. She always knew how to make her feel better. A simple hand squeeze from Shannon as she stood up showed what words she wanted to say.

I'm proud of you, and I'm happy for you.
