Summary
Max picks up speed the closer he gets to the revolving door, nodding curtly at the doorman and trying to keep the hoodie out of obvious view, even though that’s insane too. He should’ve put it in a bag or something.
He isn’t going to run to Charles' apartment, he tells himself. Tells the ancient, instinctual thing in his head and low in his chest to fuck off. Running anywhere would be crazy.
Max makes it out of the building and into the fresh air. It’s sunny out, blue skies in every direction. Gorgeous and balmy, already just a touch too hot this early in the morning. No one around is going to be moving very quickly, prime running and jogging time already past.
He takes a deep breath and turns in the direction he needs to go. Walking. At an appropriate pace.
Charles sends back an okay with a thumbs up emoji.
He starts running.
*
Charles has spent the last 28 years highly sensitive to smell, usually to the detriment of his own well-being. Max’s presence—and scent—have always helped with that.
This is the year Max finally notices.
