    Paul had gotten some kind of message out of “Starting Over.” The only message there was to pull out of it. The message John had written himself in circles trying to get away from, until he’d given in to it and let it come. How many pens had he dried up, how many pencils he’d worn down to nubs, in his vain attempts not to admit to himself what he really wanted?
