When they saw the design for the new livery they didn't think much of it. It was a simple, sleek look. All white with some green on the sleeves to match the throwback look of the car. Nothing to write home about and something they probably wouldn't think about again after the weekend was over.
It starts small.
"The new liver for the weekend, what are your thoughts."
"Yeah," Oscar starts, smiling to the noisy crowd in front of the stage. "I mean, I like it. It's a call back to McLaren's first car so that's really cool to be apart of the teams history."
The crowd screams when he's finished speaking and the interviewer looks at Lando. "And you?"
"I feel the same, mostly. Just don't know how I feel about the suits being all white, I'm a bit messy."
Everyone laughs at the response.
"Aw, but you get to be in white with Oscar. I'm sure a lot of fans love that."
The sea of people in front of them grow louder.
After practice on Friday, the two of them are standing in the garage talking about something unimportant when one of the engineers walks by, nudging Lando with his elbow on his way.
"Took you long enough, eh?" He has a wide smile on his face as he looks between them and keeps walking before either of them can ask what he ment.
Lando looks to Oscar who just shrugs, shaking his head. "No idea."
Over the next day and a half, the two of them keep getting similar comments even when they're with each other.
"The new suits look good."
"Both of you in white?"
"Let me know when you have a date."
Each time one of them gets a comment like this they send it to the other and laugh because why is everyone seemingly obsessed with their suits.
Lando and George are making their way back the their respective motor homes when George nudges him. "Stop pouting."
"I can't believe you said that I'd need the whole restaurant. You make me sound like a whore," Lando whines.
"And you're not?"
"No! I can't believe my own friend would say that about me." He's being dramatic. He knows George means nothing by it but he also can't help being annoy most of the time for fun.
"Oh you're right, I'm sorry. I forgot you're in a committed relationship now," George says with a chuckle.
"Exactly- wait, what?" Lando stops walking mid step.
George is still smiling when he turns to look at him when he notices that he's not beside him anymore. "Oscar."
"Oscar?" he asks, confusion evident in his tone.
"You look good in white Lando," is all the other says as he turns, continuing towards the Mercedes motor home.
He ends up telling Oscar about the comment later that night and the man just shrugs, mouth turning into a frown as he thinks.
"We spend a lot of time together, people are just making jokes I'm sure."
"Yeah, I guess."
It finally clicks after the race. It wasn't the best result with Oscar getting knocked down so far down in the first lap but he did a good job fighting his way back up, points or not. They're both doing interviews and can feel cameras pointed at them from every direction. They're next to each other, both of them able to hear the others questions and Lando can see Oscar look over at him from time to time out of the corner of his eye.
"Now that the race is done and you have a small break, are the newlyweds going to go on a honeymoon?"
The question throws Oscar, who had been answering pretty much on autopilot, off. He tears his eyes away from Lando and back at the person interviewing him, face scrunched in confusion.
"I'm sorry, what?"
"You and Lando," They say with a laugh. "Do you not know the nickname the two of you have acquired over the weekend?"
Oscar looks back over to Lando, the man already looking at him with a smirk on his lips.
"Ah, no." Oscar quickly looks away when he feels his cheeks start to heat up. "That's a new one, why are people saying that?"
Apparently it had started with fans online saying they looked like they were going to get married with their white suits. That evolved into people saying they were already married and then they just started calling them "newlyweds" after that.
"I guess that explains everyone's comments all weekend," Lando says later that night. They're back at the hotel trying to wind down after a long weekend, both leaving on an early flight in the morning.
"Maybe we need to pay a little bit more attention to social media during race weekends," Oscar says, voice muffled by Lando's shirt where his face is nearly pressed into his stomach. His head is resting on Lando's thigh as Lando runs his fingers through his hair absentmindedly.
"Probably," Lando chuckles. "I can practically feel you purring, you know that."
"Fuck off, feels good." There's no real bite to Oscar's words as he melts further into to the couch when he says them.
"Yeah, yeah. Whatever my husband wants." Lando leans down to kiss the top Oscar's head before going back to his phone.
Oscar can't help the way that word makes his toes curl in his socks and the smile that forces its way to his face. He quickly buries his face further into Lando's shirt before he can see, embarrassed by the giddiness that takes over. But that's okay, Lando knows.
Lando knows.
