Benji called and Robby knew what it must have cost him pride wise to do it. The one thing they have both always had in common is they care for Dana. In the same way, in different ways.
“You look like shit,” Robby said, standing in Dana's kitchen. He can't remember if it's the same color it was the last time he was here.
She's wearing a t-shirt she stole from him more than a decade ago and swore she'd give it back, but never had. The bruise left by Driscoll was beginning to fade, but the bags under her eyes had gotten worse.
His grandmother raised him to never comment on a woman's weight, but even with the baggy shirt hiding it, it was visible that she had lost some weight. Enough that scared Benji into calling him when his concern got brushed aside.
“So do you,” Dana shot back, she can't remember why she came into this room and was too stubborn to ask Robby if he knew why.
“I've just finished a double shift. I'm allowed to look like shit.” He doesn't tell her that double would have been a lot easier to deal with if she had been there. “Benji's worried about you.”
“I'm fine.” Dana could be on fire and she'd still insist that she was okay. “You should go home and rest.”
“Benji said you aren't sleeping or eating,” Robby pushed, he'd like nothing more than to go home and sleep. He's a hypocrite, standing there worrying about her while being the exact same way.
“When did you and my husband become best buddies all of a sudden? Last time you saw each other it ended in a fight.” The problem with Dana is she's every good as him at deflecting about talking about her issues.
It's on the tip of his tongue for the thousandth time to point out Benji threw the first punch. Benji, the man who didn't like to kill spiders, hated him enough to punch him. That fight damaged Dana's marriage more than it had their friendship.
“Since you stopped eating, sleeping, flinching when anyone touches you,” Robby replied, trying to keep the frustration out of his voice. “And apparently you are coming back to work? Do you really think that's wise?”
“Not for a while, but yes.” There was no explanation on why she had changed her mind about returning when she had been so sure she was done. Dana won't admit that she isn't herself. He won't or can't let her stay in denial anymore than Benji could.
