Summary
Married life at Our Cottage settles into quiet rituals. On an autumn night, as the library windows turn to dark mirrors and the candles burn low, Sophie reads poetry while Benedict pretends to draw an inkstand, only to end up drawing his wife instead. Though each pretends otherwise, neither is as unaware as they seem.
Marriage has not dulled Benedict’s fascination with Sophie, with the way she reads, the way she moves, the way she exists just beyond what he can ever fully capture. Marriage has not made her familiar - it has only made her more impossible to look away from.
