Notes:

I suddenly got this idea, and the more I thought about it, the less I could convince myself not to write it.

So here we are.

This is a crack fic played (mostly) straight, born entirely from one chaotic "what if?" that refused to leave my brain. I had a lot of fun writing it, and I hope you have just as much fun reading it.

Enjoy the chaos!

Work Text:

Act I: The Divine Priest and the Crimson Princess

The Grand Discussion Conference at Koi Tower was, by all accounts, proceeding with its usual tedious grandeur. Sect Leader Yao was halfway through a droning lament about nocturnal hunts and boundary lines, and Lan Qiren was stroking his goatee with a rhythm that suggested he was counting down the seconds until he could escape back to the Cloud Recesses.

At the head of the Lan Sect table, Lan Wangji sat in immaculate, silent repose. Next to him, Wei Wuxian was leaning back on one elbow, twirling Chenqing between his slender fingers with lazy expertise, his lips curved into a bored, faint smile. He caught Lan Wangji’s eye and gave a small, deliberate wink. Lan Wangji’s ears warmed ever so slightly, his posture remaining perfectly rigid, though his eyes softened by a fraction.

Then, the world warped.

A low, resonant hum vibrated through the floorboards of the Glamor Hall. The spiritual energy in the air suddenly surged, thick and suffocatingly ancient, causing every cultivator to grasp the hilts of their swords. Lan Wangji was on his feet in a heartbeat, Bichen unsheathing an inch, his arm instantly moving to shield Wei Wuxian.

"What is happening?!" Jin Ling shouted, his hand on Suihua as his guards scrambled.

"Calm down! Establish a perimeter!" Jiang Cheng roared, Zidian crackling with dangerous purple sparks around his knuckles.

Before anyone could form a defensive line, the ambient light in the hall dimmed drastically. The heavy silk banners of the Great Sects fluttered without a breeze, and a massive, shimmering wall of silver light manifested out of thin air, stretching across the entire eastern wall of the hall. It pulsed with a profound, cosmic energy that felt entirely detached from the golden cores of the present world.

"A manifestation anomaly?" Nie Huaisang gasped behind his fan, peering over the edge with genuine alarm. "Is it an array? A curse?"

Wei Wuxian blinked, straightening up and squinting at the screen. "It’s not resentful energy... and it’s not traditional spiritual energy either. It feels like... time? Or destiny?"

Suddenly, characters written in an ancient, luminous script rippled across the silver surface:

【 The Wheel of Samsara Turns. The Boundless Soul of the Yiling Patriarch. The Past Life: Priest of Mt. Jiuyi. 】

The hall went deathly quiet.

"The past life?" Lan Qiren repeated, his voice cracking slightly. His gaze snapped directly to Wei Wuxian. "Wei Ying! What sorcery have you brought into this hall?"

"Hey! Why is it always my fault when something weird happens?" Wei Wuxian protested, though he looked just as baffled. He turned to Lan Wangji. "Lan Zhan, I swear, I didn't script this. I'm perfectly happy in this life. I have absolutely no desire to look in the past one."

Lan Wangji did not answer. His eyes were fixed on the words 'The Past Life'. His grip on Bichen tightened until his knuckles turned white. A cold, suffocating weight settled into his chest. Past life? Wei Wuxian belonged to the present. He belonged to him. The very concept of a future where Wei Wuxian existed without him, or as someone else entirely, struck a discordant, painful chord deep within his soul.

Before anyone could speak further, the silver light dissolved into a vivid, breathtaking vista of a drama titled The Longest Promise.

The screen displayed a majestic, mist-shrouded mountain range that dwarfed even the peaks of Gusu. White clouds swirled around ancient, ethereal pagodas that seemed to touch the heavens.

Sitting cross-legged on a pristine mat in an interior temple was a figure. He wore robes of blinding, immaculate white—so stark and pure they made the Lan Sect uniforms look colorful. His hair was meticulously styled, half-bound up with a silver headpiece, and his face...

The entire Glamor Hall gasped collectively.

"Wei... Wei-xiong?!" Nie Huaisang’s fan dropped completely, clattering onto his table.

"Senior Wei?!" Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi cried out in unison, their jaws dropping.

The man on the screen shared Wei Wuxian’s exact face—the same sharp jawline, the same striking eyes, the same flawless features. But the aura was entirely, jarringly different. Where Wei Wuxian was expressive, fluid, and draped in casual, windswept black and red robes, this figure was the very definition of ascetic, divine perfection. He sat in absolute meditation, surrounded by a faint, celestial glow. He looked cold. Sacred. Untouchable.

"He looks... like a Lan," Jiang Cheng muttered, his face contorting into an expression of profound disgust and confusion. "Why does Wei Wuxian look like he belongs in the Cloud Recesses? And why is he so... quiet?"

The man on the screen—identified by a text overlay as Shi Ying, the Royal Prince of Kong Sang and Great Priest of Mt. Jiuyi—opened his eyes. They were clear, profound, and utterly devoid of the playful mischief that defined Wei Wuxian. They were the eyes of a god looking down upon mortals.

Lan Wangji stared at the screen. His chest tightened. He did not like the coldness in those eyes. But more than that, he felt a strange, primal surge of possessiveness. Even if it was a future life, that face belonged to the man who laughed loudly, who drank Emperor’s Smile, who clung to him in the Jingshi.

The scene on the screen changed. The serene, white-and-silver world of Mt. Jiuyi was suddenly invaded by a burst of vibrant red. A young woman appeared, running through a forest. She was dressed in bright, crimson tribal robes, a lively, fiercely passionate expression on her face.

A caption appeared: 【 Zhu Yan. Princess of the Chi Clan. The Destined Calamity. 】

Lan Wangji’s gaze snapped instantly to the next sequence. The screen showed their first meeting. Zhu Yan had broken into the forbidden grounds. She was trapped, panicking, when suddenly, Shi Ying drifted down from the heavens. His white robes billowed around him, his face an emotionless mask of divine authority.

Zhu Yan stared up at him, completely entranced.

"Oh, no," Nie Huaisang whispered. "That is the look of a young maiden falling head over heels."

In the Glamor Hall, the temperature dropped significantly.

Lan Wangji’s gaze hardened. His golden eyes locked onto the screen, tracking the way the girl looked at Shi Ying, and more importantly, the way the screen’s music shifted—becoming sweeping, romantic, and deeply emotional. On screen, Shi Ying saved her. As she stumbled, he caught her. For a split second, the camera zoomed in on their proximity. Shi Ying’s hand was lightly resting near her waist to steady her, his eyes looking down into hers. The contrast between his pristine white robes and her fiery red dress was visually stunning, painting a picture of fated, star-crossed lovers.

A low, sharp sound echoed from the Lan table. Wei Wuxian looked down. The fine porcelain cup in Lan Wangji’s hand had developed a distinct hairline fracture.

"Lan Zhan?" Wei Wuxian murmured softly, reaching out to touch his arm. "Lan Zhan, it’s just an illusion. It’s not real."

"It is your soul," Lan Wangji said, his voice dropping to a gravelly, dangerously low register. His eyes remained fixed on the screen, where Zhu Yan was now smiling brightly at Shi Ying, bowing and calling him "Shifu."

"Uh-oh," Lan Jingyi whispered to Sizhui. "Hanguang-Jun looks like he’s about to unsheathe Bichen and slash the wall."

Jiang Cheng let out a harsh, mocking bark of laughter. "Well, well. Look at that. The Yiling Patriarch, a grand master of the dark arts, becomes a holy priest who takes on a beautiful female disciple. And it looks like he’s breaking his vows for her!"

"Jiang Cheng, don't stir the pot!" Wei Wuxian pleaded, frantically looking between his brother and his incredibly tense husband. He leaned heavily into Lan Wangji’s side, rubbing his shoulder. "Lan Zhan, look at me. I don't even like red robes anymore. I only like white ones. Specifically, your white ones!"

Lan Wangji did not relax. On the screen, the montage was continuing, showing the progression of Shi Ying and Zhu Yan’s relationship. It showed them practicing magic together under a blooming tree. Shi Ying was teaching her how to control her spirit companion, his long, elegant fingers wrapping over hers to guide her movements. Zhu Yan was blushing. Shi Ying’s face, usually so stoic, showed a faint, heartbreakingly tender softening of his lips.

"He smiled," Lan Wangji noted out loud. The words were quiet, but they carried the weight of an avalanche.

Wei Wuxian broke out into a cold sweat. "Lan Zhan! That’s just... that’s just his teaching face!"

"He touched her hand," Lan Wangji added, his voice entirely devoid of emotion, which made it infinitely more terrifying. The spiritual energy around Bichen began to hum.

The screen shifted to a rainy night. Zhu Yan was crying in the mud. Shi Ying stood over her with his Tianwen umbrella, letting himself get soaked by the downpour. His eyes were filled with a profound, agonizing conflict.

"If you die, what is the point of the gods protecting this world?" Shi Ying’s voice echoed across the Glamor Hall. It was Wei Wuxian’s voice, but stripped of its usual playful cadence, filled instead with a devastating, romantic despair.

Just then, the screen delivered the ultimate blow. The scene shifted to an ethereal chamber. Zhu Yan and Shi Ying were facing each other. Zhu Yan stepped forward, her eyes wet with tears, and suddenly threw her arms around Shi Ying’s neck. Shi Ying froze for a fraction of a second. Then, with a sudden, desperate intensity, his hands came up to grip her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. He leaned down, and on the giant screen, he kissed her completely, a deep, passionate, sweeping embrace.

CRACK.

The porcelain cup in Lan Wangji’s hand didn't just fracture this time; it shattered into a hundred microscopic pieces of dust. A terrifying, icy aura exploded outward from the Lan table, causing the wine in everyone else's cups to instantly freeze solid.

Lan Wangji was staring at the screen. His face was dead calm, but his chest was rising and falling in sharp, shallow breaths. The pure, unadulterated essence of vinegar—of absolute, catastrophic jealousy—suffocated the room.

"Lan Zhan..." Wei Wuxian squeaked. "Lan Zhan, please look at me—"

Without a word, Lan Wangji reached out. His large, powerful hand gripped Wei Wuxian’s jaw, forcing him to look away from the screen. Before Wei Wuxian could even gasp, Lan Wangji leaned in and violently captured his lips right there, in the middle of the Glamor Hall, in front of the entire cultivation world.

It was a fierce, bruising, utterly possessive kiss. Lan Wangji’s fingers tangled into Wei Wuxian’s dark hair, pulling him flush against his chest, his body completely shielding Wei Wuxian from the sight of anyone else. He was asserting ownership, deep and undeniable.

Wei Wuxian, once the initial shock wore off, wrapped his arms tightly around Lan Wangji’s broad shoulders, returning the kiss with equal fervor, letting his husband drink as much reassurance as he needed.

The screen, completely indifferent, shifted to its final, climactic sequence. The sound of clashing swords and roaring magic filled the hall, forcing Lan Wangji to finally break the kiss, though he kept his arms wrapped tightly around Wei Wuxian’s waist.

The scene was devastating. Mt. Jiuyi was under siege. Shi Ying stood in a wasteland of ruins, his pristine white robes torn and heavily stained with blood. Opposite him stood Zhu Yan, holding a sword, her face covered in tears and distorted by heartbreak and misunderstanding.

On screen, a powerful, dark force was manipulating the battlefield. Shi Ying looked at Zhu Yan, his eyes filled with a profound, all-consuming sorrow. He didn't raise his weapon to defend himself. Instead, as Zhu Yan lunged forward in a moment of blinded fury, Shi Ying deliberately stepped into the path of her blade.

Spurt.

The sound of metal piercing flesh echoed perfectly through the Glamor Hall. Wei Wuxian flinched, his hand automatically flying to his own chest. Lan Wangji’s grip on him tightened so fiercely it almost hurt.

Shi Ying stumbled forward, coughing up a torrent of brilliant, crimson blood. He fell into Zhu Yan’s arms. Zhu Yan screamed, a sound of absolute, shattering agony.

"Did you... ever truly care for me?" Zhu Yan sobbed.

Shi Ying raised a trembling, bloody hand, gently pressing his fingers against her cheek. "Every day... since the day I met you," Shi Ying whispered, his voice fading. "I have loved you."

With those final words, his hand slipped from her face. His eyes closed, and his body dissolved into a beautiful, heartbreaking shower of glowing white feathers and starlight, vanishing into the wind.

The screen suddenly flashed with a brilliant, blinding light, and then, as quickly as it had appeared, it vanished. The ambient light of the Glamor Hall snapped back to normal.

For a long moment, no one spoke.

Without saying a single word to anyone in the hall, Lan Wangji stood up. He grabbed Wei Wuxian by the wrist—with an absolute, unbreakable grip—and dragged him straight out of the Glamor Hall, leaving the cultivation world behind to process the trauma, intending to enforce "every day" until the image of the white-robed priest was thoroughly erased.

Act II: The Rogue Prince and the Serious Blade

The morning after the catastrophic celestial screening, the Glamor Hall was tense. Sect leaders sat at their tables with stiff posture, casting wary, sidelong glances at the Lan table. Lan Wangji looked as pristine and unbothered as ever, though the faint dark circles under Wei Wuxian’s eyes and his particularly smug, thoroughly well-loved smirk suggested that "every day" had been enforced with absolute, unyielding discipline.

Sect Leader Yao cleared his throat, trying to steer the conference back to standard trade routes. "As I was saying before the... disruption yesterday—"

A low, resonant hum vibrated through the floorboards.

Jiang Cheng’s head snapped up so fast his neck cracked. “You have got to be kidding me.”

The ambient light plunged into darkness. The air grew thick, shimmering with that same ancient, cosmic spiritual signature. Across the eastern wall, the silver screen manifested once more, its surface rippling like liquid mercury.

Lan Wangji’s hand instantly clamped onto Wei Wuxian’s waist, his golden eyes flashing with immediate, defensive territorialism. He braced himself to see his husband loving someone else again.

But as the luminous script began to crawl across the silver light, Wei Wuxian’s smile froze.

【 The Wheel of Samsara Turns. The Immovable Jade of Gusu. The Next Life: The Light of the Martial Arts World. 】

"The Immovable Jade?" Jin Ling blinked, looking between the screen and his uncles. "That's... that's Hanguang-Jun's title! It's showing Hanguang-Jun's next life!"

Wei Wuxian’s head whirled around to stare at Lan Wangji. "Lan Zhan? Yournext life?"

Lan Wangji frowned, his brow twitching slightly. Before he could speak, the silver light dissolved into a breathtaking scene of a chaotic, sprawling martial arts world from the drama *Legend of Fei*.

A text overlay appeared: 【 Xie Mei, courtesy name Xie Yun. Prince of Duan, Master of the Lightness Skill. 】

The screen focused on a young man leaping across the rooftops of a bustling town. The entire hall collectively held its breath. The man had Lan Wangji’s exact face—the flawless, jade-carved features, the striking golden-amber eyes, the perfect posture. But everything else was wrong. Completely, fundamentally, alarmingly wrong.

He wasn't wearing white. He wore dark, practical traveling robes of deep blue and black. His hair was tied up in a loose, messy high ponytail with strands framing his face. But it was his expression that sent a shockwave through the room.

He was smirking

On screen, Xie Yun dodged a flying dagger with a lazy, fluid spin, landed elegantly on a wooden tavern sign, and let out a bright, boisterous laugh. He winked at a street vendor, entirely unbothered by the chaos around him.

"He... he laughed," Lan Jingyi whispered, horrified. "Hanguang-Jun laughed?!"

"He winked!" Wei Wuxian gasped, his hands flying to his chest. He stared at the screen, his mind struggling to process the sight of a Lan Wangji who looked like a rogue, talked like a salesman, and possessed a silver tongue.

The screen cut to a montage of Xie Yun talking. He was incredibly loquacious, teasing people left and right, composing poetry on the fly, and running away from fights using a lightness skill so fast he practically turned into a gust of wind.

"Why is he running away?" Jiang Cheng muttered, looking disgusted. "Hanguang-Jun running from a fight? And he won't shut up! He sounds just like... like..." Jiang Cheng slowly turned his gaze to Wei Wuxian.

"He sounds like me," Wei Wuxian whispered, his eyes wide. A strange, possessive heat flared in his chest. Seeing Lan Wangji behave so playfully was incredibly attractive, but it also made him intensely alert. If Lan Zhan was a charming, smooth-talking rogue in his next life... that meant he was a magnet for trouble. And for women.

The screen didn't keep him waiting. The background music shifted from playful and whimsical to sharp, rhythmic, and fiercely heroic. A young woman appeared on screen. She wore practical, tight-fitting warrior robes of white and red, her hair pulled back into a fierce, no-nonsense ponytail. She held a massive, heavy broadsword.

A caption appeared: 【 Zhou Fei. The Successor of the South Blade. 】

On screen, Zhou Fei was fighting off an army of bandits, her blade cutting through the air with lethal, terrifying precision. She was stoic, serious, fiercely protective, and spoke only in short, blunt sentences.

"Oh, look," Nie Huaisang pointed out from behind his fan. "She's rather quiet. Fierce, disciplined, doesn't like to waste words... Wei-xiong, doesn't she remind you of someone?"

Wei Wuxian didn't answer. His eyes were glued to the screen as Xie Yun suddenly dropped from a tree, landing right next to Zhou Fei. Xie Yun didn't draw a sword. Instead, he leaned casually against a pillar, looked at Zhou Fei with a gaze so incredibly tender, sweet, and openly flirtatious that Wei Wuxian’s golden core practically flipped upside down.

"Waterweed Beauty," Xie Yun’s voice echoed through the hall—it was Lan Wangji’s deep, beautiful baritone, but dripping with a playful, teasing affection. "You look exceptionally fierce today."

Zhou Fei didn't even look at him, her face a mask of cold indifference. "Shut up and help."

“As you wish, my lady,"Xie Yun beamed, stepping in with his lightning-fast lightness skill to shield her back.

In the Glamor Hall, a heavy, suffocating cloud of vinegar suddenly began to brew—but this time, it wasn't coming from the Lan table's left side. It was coming from Wei Wuxian.

Wei Wuxian’s fingers dug into the fabric of Lan Wangji’s robes. His eyes narrowed into slits as he watched Xie Yun follow Zhou Fei around on screen like a devoted, lovesick puppy, constantly talking to her, making her custom jewelry, and looking at her like she hung the moon.

"Waterweed Beauty?!" Wei Wuxian repeated, his voice dropping an octave, mimicking the dark tone Lan Wangji had used the day before. "He called her Waterweed Beauty? Lan Zhan! You never gave me a pet name! You just call me 'Wei Ying' or 'shameless'!"

Lan Wangji looked entirely bewildered, staring at his future self with a mixture of profound alienation and mild alarm. "Wei Ying. That is not me."

"It has your face!" Wei Wuxian pointed an accusing finger at the screen, where Xie Yun was currently leaning in entirely too close to Zhou Fei's face, a soft, devastatingly handsome smile playing on his lips as he tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "Look at that! Look at how he’s looking at her! You clearly have a type, Hanguang-Jun! You just want someone who ignores you and carries a giant weapon!"

"I do not flirt," Lan Wangji said firmly, though his own ears pinked slightly at the sight of his face being so incredibly forward with a woman.

The screen sequence escalated, showcasing the depth of Xie Yun’s devotion. The scene shifted to a cold, snowy landscape. Xie Yun was pale, coughing up blood—he had been afflicted by a devastating, lethal poison known as the *Bone-Piercing Frost*. Despite dying, he was smiling, wrapped in thick furs, watching Zhou Fei practice her sword forms in the snow.

"If I can die after seeing my Waterweed Beauty one last time, my life has not been in vain," Xie Yun murmured on screen, his gaze full of a profound, sweeping romanticism.

On screen, Zhou Fei indeed looked devastated. She caught Xie Yun as he collapsed into the snow, holding his face in her hands. For the first time, her stoic facade cracked, tears streaming down her cheeks. Xie Yun raised a weak, trembling hand, his thumb gently brushing away her tears. He leaned up, and with a slow, breathless, tenderness, he pressed his lips against hers. It was a soft, lingering, deeply emotional kiss, surrounded by falling snow.

SLAM!

Wei Wuxian stood up so fast his chair flew backward, crashing onto the floorboards.

"That is enough!" Wei Wuxian yelled, his eyes practically flashing red with a sudden surge of pure, unadulterated Yiling Patriarch jealousy. He pointed Chenqing directly at the screen. "Turn it off! Strip it down! I don't want to see it anymore!"

The entire hall stared at him in shock. Lan Wangji blinked, a sudden, subtle shift occurring in his golden eyes. He looked up at Wei Wuxian, who was breathing heavily, his face flushed with a furious, adorable pout, his eyes burning with absolute possessiveness.

"Wei Ying," Lan Wangji murmured softly.

"No, Lan Zhan! I am furious!" Wei Wuxian turned on his husband, stomp-walking over to him and grabbing him by the lapels of his white robes. "You kissed her! In the snow! With that stupid, handsome rogue smile! Why does he get to be the sweet, romantic one?!"

Jiang Cheng put his head in his hands, groaning loudly. "Yesterday it was Hanguang-Jun freezing the room, today it's Wei Wuxian throwing a tantrum. Can someone please pierce my core and end it."

Wei Wuxian ignored everyone. He climbed right into Lan Wangji’s lap, straddling his thighs in full view of the entire cultivation world, wrapping his arms fiercely around Lan Wangji’s neck. "Listen to me, Lan Er-gege. You are my Jade. You wear white. You stay quiet. I don't care if you're a prince in the next life, if I catch you flirting with a 'Waterweed Beauty' I will find a way to reincarnate early just to break his legs!"

Lan Wangji’s lips twitched. A very faint, nearly imperceptible smile touched the corners of his mouth. The dark, possessive anxiety that had plagued him since yesterday completely vanished, replaced by a profound, warming wave of satisfaction. Wei Wuxian loved him this fiercely. Wei Wuxian wanted him entirely to himself, across every lifetime.

Lan Wangji’s large hands came up to rest securely on Wei Wuxian’s waist, locking him in place. "I am yours."

Right at that moment, the silver screen flashed brilliantly, the image of Xie Yun and Zhou Fei dissolving into a shower of golden sparks before vanishing entirely.

Wei Wuxian lifted his head, glaring at the empty wall one last time before turning his gaze back to his husband. "It's gone. Good."

Lan Wangji didn't say a word. He simply tightened his grip, stood up smoothly while lifting Wei Wuxian entirely off the ground in a bridal carry, and began walking toward the exit for the second day in a row, leaving a completely bewildered hall behind them.

Act III: The True Law of the Soul

The Grand Discussion Conference had finally—finally—resumed a semblance of normalcy on the third day. The silver screen had remained dark, the golden frost had melted from the pillars, and Wei Wuxian was currently resting his chin on Lan Wangji’s shoulder, lazily sketching arrays on the tabletop with a spilled drop of tea.

Then, the floorboards hummed.

Jiang Cheng dropped his forehead directly onto his desk with a hollow thunk. "I'm leaving. I am literally leaving the sect leader seat to Jin Ling and becoming a rogue cultivator."

"Wait, Jiang Cheng, look!" Wei Wuxian sat up straight, his eyes widening.

The silver screen didn't manifest a sweeping landscape this time. Instead, two massive columns of text appeared side by side, pulsing with a deep, golden, karmic light that made the air smell faintly of sandalwood and lotus blossoms.

【 The Law of Samsara: A soul is born into the next life wearing the face of the one they loved most in the past. 】

The hall went deathly quiet. Lan Qiren’s hand froze on his beard. Nie Huaisang stopped rustling his fan.

"Born with the face of your lover...?" Wei Wuxian murmured the words aloud, his brilliant mind instantly connecting the dots. His gaze snapped to the next lines rippling across the screen.

【 Lifetime Alignment: 】
【 Shi Ying (The White-Robed Priest) — Was the Soul of LAN WANGJI. 】
【 Zhu Yan (The Crimson Princess) — Was the Soul of WEI WUXIAN. 】

【 Xie Yun (The Rogue Prince) — Was the Soul of WEI WUXIAN. 】
【 Zhou Fei (The Serious Blade) — Was the Soul of LAN WANGJI. 】

A collective, echoing gasp shattered the silence of Koi Tower.

"What?!" Jin Ling shrieked, pointing at the wall. "So... so Hanguang-Jun wasn't the priest?! He was the girl in the other life?! Wait, no, he was the priest in that life, but he had Senior Wei's face—ah! My head hurts!"

"Oh... oh my," Nie Huaisang gasped, his eyes alight with the sheer, unadulterated joy of a scholar uncovering the ultimate romance. "Don't you see? The faces were swapped! Shi Ying had Wei-xiong's face because in this life, Lan Wangji loves Wei Wuxian above all else! So his soul took Wei-xiong's face into the next cycle!”

Wei Wuxian was frozen. The jealousy that had consumed him for the past forty-eight hours evaporated, replaced by a profound, breathtaking realization that hit him like a physical blow.

He slowly turned his head to look at Lan Wangji. Lan Wangji was staring at the wall, his golden eyes wide, a rare, completely unmasked look of vulnerability stealing over his features.

"Lan Zhan..." Wei Wuxian’s voice was barely a whisper, thick with sudden emotion. "The priest... the holy, pristine priest who wore white, who lived in isolation, who followed every rule until he broke them all for love... that wasn't me. That was you."

He remembered the screen from the first day. The priest’s agonizing despair, the way he held the umbrella in the rain, the way he chose to step onto a blade rather than hurt the one he loved. It wasn't a future version of Wei Wuxian becoming a rule-follower; it was Lan Wangji’s soul, pure and unyielding, carrying Wei Wuxian’s beautiful face into the next world.

And the girl in the fiery red robes, the wild, passionate princess who fought fate and cried out in devastating heartbreak? That was him. Wei Wuxian’s soul, carrying the face of his beloved Jade.

"And the second one," Wei Wuxian choked out a wet, breathless laugh, tears suddenly blurring his vision. "Xie Yun... the smooth-talking, poetic, flirting rogue who wore dark robes and couldn't shut up... that was me. I had your face, Lan Zhan. I spent a whole lifetime running around being a shameless flirt, looking exactly like Hanguang-Jun!"

And Zhou Fei—the stoic, quiet, fierce warrior who carried a giant blade, who never wasted words, and who searched the ends of the earth to find a cure for her poisoned lover? That was Lan Wangji’s soul, wearing Wei Wuxian’s face.

"They never loved anyone else," Lan Sizhui murmured from the junior benches, his own eyes bright with tears. "In every life... they only ever loved each other. They just wore each other's faces."

The realization settled over the Lan table like a holy benediction. The immense weight of the "vinegar" they had both drowned in over the past two days turned into a sweet, overwhelming surge of devotion. They hadn't been watching their spouse love a stranger; they had been watching the eternal, cosmic cycle of their own souls finding each other, bound so tightly by love that their very appearances were molded by the memory of the other.

Lan Wangji turned to Wei Wuxian. The tips of his ears were red, but his gaze was fiercely, beautifully clear. He reached out, his long fingers trembling slightly as he cupped Wei Wuxian’s cheek, wiping away a tear that had escaped.

"Wei Ying," Lan Wangji breathed, his voice vibrating with a depth of love that silenced the entire hall. "It was always you.

"Lan Zhan!" Wei Wuxian cried, completely abandoning all pretense of decorum. He threw himself into Lan Wangji’s arms, burying his face in his neck, sobbing and laughing at the same time. "You absolute fool! I was jealous of you! You were jealous of me! We are the biggest idiots in the entire cultivation world!"

Lan Wangji wrapped his arms around him, burying his face in Wei Wuxian’s dark hair, holding him so tightly it felt as if he were trying to fuse their souls across past, present, and future lifetimes.

"Mn," Lan Wangji murmured against his skin, a soft, incredibly beautiful smile finally breaking across his face. "Idiots."

”Hey!" Jiang Cheng yelled, though his voice lacked any real bite this time, his expression a mix of relief and lingering exasperation. "The screen is gone! You two know who you are now! Can we please finally talk about the nocturnal hunt boundaries, or are you going to elope into a third reincarnation right in front of me?!"

Wei Wuxian lifted his head from Lan Wangji’s shoulder, his eyes red but sparking with his signature, radiant mischief. He looked at his husband, then reached up to gently tug on the tails of the cloud-patterned forehead ribbon.

"Sorry, Jiang Cheng!" Wei Wuxian called out, a brilliant, shameless grin splitting his face. "Conference is officially cancelled! Hanguang-Jun and I have two past lives to make up for. Every day means every day, across all timelines!"

Without waiting for his brother’s furious retort, Wei Wuxian grabbed Lan Wangji’s hand, and together, the two of them bolted out of the Glamor Hall, laughing like disciples escaping punishment, their souls perfectly entwined, wearing the faces of the only ones they would ever love.

Notes:

Aiya! You actually made it to the end!

So... what did we learn today?

Never trust mysterious heavenly screens.

Never underestimate Lan Zhan's jealousy.

Never underestimate my jealousy either.

And if the heavens decide to broadcast your love life in front of the entire cultivation world... well... just accept your fate.

This idea barged into my head, refused to leave, and demanded to be written. I was just an innocent victim. (Lan Zhan says I'm lying.)

Thank you so much for reading! If this made you laugh, smile, or snort loud enough to scare the people around you, then my mission is accomplished.

Now excuse me—Lan Zhan is looking at me again, and I should probably go before he decides "every day" means right now.

See you in the next bout of chaos!
