Course Description

A survey of foundational philosophical problems in soul physics from a primarily Nousporist perspective. We will begin by introducing some key preliminary studies and the basic framework of soul theory. Then we will go on to explore images of the person, the Titan, and the prime mover of life as represented by such, and examine some of their most perplexing features.

Key prerequisites to this course include NSP250: Introduction to Soul Physics and NSP256: Persons, Souls, and Bodies. It is highly recommended to be taken in conjunction with NSP359: Soul Physics Laboratory, as practicum is of the utmost importance in grasping this subject.

• Philosophy of Soul Physics: Experimental Reflections on Self and Soul, 4th ed., edited by Anaxagoras
• The Body, the Soul, and the Titans: Classical and Contemporary Readings, edited by Empedocles
• A Dialogue on the Sanctity of Divinity, edited by Herodotan

Additional readings will be assigned periodically. Course curricula may be subject to change at any time as my own understanding of the field progresses.

Assessments

Participation (20%): This grade will be based on weekly attendance and contributions to discussion. If unable to participate in person, you will be expected to submit a meaningful addition to the discourse every class before the beginning of lecture. A willingness to ask difficult questions and develop an independent perspective will be essential to further study.

Short Paper 1 (15%): Based on the first set of studies we discuss, you will be tasked with selecting one and critiquing its methodology or outcomes. More information will be provided as the due date approaches.

Short Paper 2 (15%): You will be tasked with selecting a particular historical or hypothetical entity and applying the framework of soul theory to it. More information will be provided as the due date approaches.

Midterm Assessment (25%): Based on your interests and understanding of course content, you will be tasked with identifying an unanswered question in the realm of soul physics and designing a study to address it.

Final Assessment (25%): This test may be oral or written. You will be tasked with presenting a coherent response to any of the philosophical problems covered by this course. You must take a stance and provide at least three relevant defenses. Any follow-up questions I pose may be answered for extra credit.

Course Policies

Class Conduct

No question is frivolous and no subject is off-limits. However, never interrupt me when I am speaking. An extensive discussion or one that pertains to your specific work may be better saved for office hours.

Late Work and Extensions

Late submissions will be accepted for up to 14 days after the due date, subject to a 5% deduction per day. You may request an extension on any assignment for up to the same amount of time if you anticipate being unable to complete your work. You must request it at least 24 hours in advance of the deadline.

Absences

If you must be absent from lecture, contact Hyacinthia, not me. You do not need to provide a reason. You may miss up to two classes without change to your participation grade and more if you have appropriate medical documentation. In exceptional cases of prolonged absence, participation requirements may be waived entirely.

E-Mail Conduct

Avoid contacting me for technical or logistical issues. These should go to Hyacinthia. You may e-mail me with brief content questions or requests for additional office hours if necessary. Do not be alarmed if no response is received within the first 72 hours. You may let Hyacinthia know to notify me after this.

Academic Integrity

It is not my concern how you choose to waste your time as long as you do not waste mine or anyone else’s. Dishonest work will receive an automatic zero if identified. If not, feel free to congratulate yourself on neglecting your own education.

Religious Accommodations

There will be no classes during Prayer Week, but I will hold office hours as usual. Additional accommodations may be discussed with Hyacinthia. Be advised that this course will contain content that some may perceive as blasphemous.
