Work Text:
Ellen sends you off and closes the bar, taking the boys to the back hours before closing. Presumably for a lecturing on bringing an omega they don’t know on a hunt before you fully recovered from the last one. It is a fact that you are still dealing with the consequences of being hurt and admittedly you are a little unstable but this is your life, not hers and you have taken care of yourself for the majority of it.
You start packing your stuff once she bar is fully closed. As much as a wonderful mother figure and pack leader she is, you must kill this monster with the Winchesters. Revenge is what drives almost every hunter and you are no exception. Without that drive most of you would be dead by now, including you. That thing needs to die.
Your bag is completely unpacked when you grab it, you were fully settled in until now. All your hunting gear is packed away. Weapons, clothes, spell ingredients, snacks, first aid kit, meds from the hospital and heat suppressants, you cannot forget heat suppressants on a hunt. Everything takes you an hour to gather up, most of it hidden somewhere in your mess of a room. That gets cleaned up too, comfort items and good luck charms shoved in your bag and the nesting material that you borrowed thrown in the laundry basket.
A knock on the door startles you out of sharpening your knives. The door creaks open to all three of them standing there, clearly having just finished an argument. You see Ellen in front of them both with her arms crossed, she looks frustrated. The men tower over her but both seem like they are trying to be smaller, almost submissive.
Ellen speaks first “If you really have to go on this hunt, you need to stick with the Winchesters. There must be at least one eye or ear on you at all times. They are responsible for taking care of you, or so help them if you get hurt.” she pulls out the mom voice for that, leaving no room for disagreement.
Frustration simmers under everything else, you were hunting solo before and survived alone for years, now you can’t even have that chance. They can’t seem to look past your being an omega, seeing you as broken like everyone else. Above everything you are a hunter, a grown man who can protect yourself. You don’t want to be alone, but that’s not the point! At least her rules apply to them too. Maybe it won’t be too bad, having someone to watch your back.
“Okay, yeah.” nodding at them you accept.
Dean grins and stands up straight “We leave with Baby first light!” he reminds you of an eager puppy.
The drive is going to be 20 hours so you take time while they bring out supplies to the Impala you make the back seat into a bit of a nest to keep comfortable. Your favourite blankets and pillow while you wear your favourite sweater. The back bench is completely covered in your comically large fuzzy blanket with your pillow on your lap. Their scent mixes with yours to create something you can easily see yourself getting addicted to.
Dean laughs at your nest “Getting comfortable back there?”
Sam elbows him, you glare daggers, absolutely not close enough to make fun you. Music fills the still air for the next hour. Classic rock, something about it soothes you, like homemade mac ‘n’ cheese.
The road ahead is flat as far as you can see, enclosed by fields, usually corn. Every once in a while you notice cows, maybe some horses. The vast empty expanses are something you did not miss about hunting. Why did people insist on spreading out so much? You could finish half your cases in the time it takes to get there and be less stressed out by the driving of these people.
Eventually Sam asks for your information on the monster you guys are hunting. You curl up a bit more in your hoodie for comfort and start explaining.
“It can mimic sounds and voices to a disturbing level but only if it has heard the exact thing before, mostly rain and agonized screams.” You start “Based off local reportings it spends days or weeks toying with its prey and trying to gather as much as their voice as possible in order to lure the next victim.”
Sam interjects “How do we kill it”
You take a deep shuddering breath “The creature so far has been immune to everything a hunter can shoot from a gun; salt, silver, iron alloys, fire and even spells. I scoured lore books, broke into a secret bunker stocked full of encyclopedias of monster and found nothing on it.” continuing to explain “Bunker would make a good base though.” you add on to lighten the load.
“If it bleeds it can die,” The two of them state at once.
After all that though the biggest problem is the intelligence and patience the monster possesses, it takes immense pleasure from the hunt and knows exactly how to inflict the most pain, all the while never satiating the ever growing appetite for human.
Sam notices the way your eyes stare vacant into the distance after explaining and tries to calm his scent for you. Old books and forest.
When you don’t react to his attempt at soothing his instincts kick in and he curses then crawls over into the back seat, much to Dean’s dismay. He kicks the dash with his dirty boots and flails around with his dramatic limbs, almost hitting his brother more than once. Then he thuds onto the floor in front of you before climbing up next to you.
You laugh at his antics, being ripped out of the shadows of your mind. You flinch slightly when his warm body finds itself touching your side but quickly settle and lean to the touch. Again, every normal part of you is saying to resist, you only met him yesterday, but the howling inside you insisting he is your mate takes over as you submit to omega instinct and curl up against him, purring. His body is so warm and the worn flannel is so soft. His arm reaches around you, enveloping you more in his scent and steady presence. This is home, possibly for the first time even if you can never admit it. All the remaining fear melts away.
When you wake up you don’t even notice you fell asleep but its dark out. Sam has your head on his lap and your blanket wrapped around you, something he must have done to make you more comfortable. You feel him snoring softly above you. Dean has the music turned down for you but he’s happily singing along to keep himself awake. His voice is surprisingly nice as you listen, he’s really putting his soul into it.
“Oh you’re awake,” Dean keeps his voice low “next motel is just a few miles down the road so you can really get your beauty rest,” he winks with a little smirk “Decided we don’t need to drive through the night.”
You sigh to yourself, feeling relieved you get more prep time.
Once you pull into the motel parking lot Sam wakes up, his face heats up when he notices you on his lap, shifting slightly as he remembers the way he just climbed into the back seat because he couldn’t stand you being scared. As much as Dean taunts him for being sentimental this was completely insane, crawling around in a moving vehicle for someone he met a day ago? That’s stupid and reckless even for a hunter.
Dean gets two rooms connected to each other at the motel, he takes his shift on watching over you after Sam sat in the back seat with you. He claims the bed closest to the door to keep an eye on threats. You feel safe in a way you haven’t in a long time, never even noticing how scared yo were before compared to this.
