Chapter Text

X793 Feb
The train disappeared long before Gray found the strength to move.
Long after its whistle had faded into the distance...
long after Magnolia Station returned to its ordinary rhythm...
he remained standing exactly where she had left him.
As if taking one step meant accepting that she was truly gone.
And he wasn't ready.
He never would be.
People often say that time heals.
Gray would spend the next year proving them wrong.
Time did not heal.
It merely taught pain how to become quieter.
How to settle into your bones until it no longer screamed...
only whispered.
Every hour.
Every breath.
Every heartbeat.
The first morning without Juvia in Magnolia felt impossible.
The second wasn't any easier.
Neither was the hundredth.
He still woke expecting rain to greet him outside his window.
Expecting an overly cheerful voice to wish him good morning.
Expecting blue hair somewhere in the guild.
Then reality would arrive...
cold.
Merciless.
And he would remember.
She was gone.
Because he had sent her away.
Some nights he dreamed she had come home.
She would walk through Fairy Tail's doors wearing that familiar smile.
Call his name as though nothing had happened.
He would cross the room without thinking.
Without fear.
Without curses.
Without fate standing between them.
He would hold her.
Finally.
Only to wake with his arms wrapped around empty air.
Breathing hard.
Heart racing.
The silence beside his bed louder than any nightmare.
Other nights...
the dreams were crueler.
He watched the curse claim her over and over again.
Her body collapsing into his arms.
Her heartbeat fading beneath his trembling hands.
Her eyes searching for him one last time.
And every single dream ended the same way.
With her whisper.
"Gray-sama..."
Then darkness.
Gray always woke before sunrise.
Drenched in sweat.
His hands shaking so violently he sometimes had to look at them just to remind himself—
she was still alive.
Somewhere.
Far away from him.
Exactly where he had forced her to be.
He stopped sleeping properly after that.
Because every time he closed his eyes...
he had to lose her all over again.
So instead...
he stopped giving himself the chance to dream.
He buried himself inside missions no one else wanted.
The longer.
The bloodier.
The more dangerous...
the better.
If his body collapsed from exhaustion...
his mind had less strength left to remember her.
At least...
that was the lie he kept telling himself.
It never worked.
Because she lived everywhere.
In rainstorms.
In warm bread.
In blue flowers growing beside forgotten roads.
In every laugh that sounded just a little too bright.
In every quiet moment where the world slowed enough for memory to catch him.
Fairy Tail noticed.
Gray smiled less.
Spoke less.
Laughed almost never.
He completed every mission perfectly...
and returned home looking emptier than when he had left.
No one mentioned Juvia.
Not because they forgot her.
Because they loved them both too much to reopen wounds that had never closed.
Some grief is loud.
Gray's wasn't.
His grief learned to breathe beside him.
To eat with him.
To walk beside him through Magnolia's streets.
To lie awake with him until dawn.
Invisible to everyone...
except those who loved him enough to recognize silence as another language.
The curse had succeeded in separating them.
It had kept Juvia alive.
But every single day...
Gray wondered whether saving her life had quietly cost him his own.
Gray didn't remember falling asleep.
Only that exhaustion had finally defeated him.
Then...
he was back.
Back to that night.
( this reflecting part I Chapter : 22).
The guild hall stood exactly as it had.
Warm lights.
Familiar voices.
Friends surrounding them.
The last night his world had still felt whole.
Juvia stood before him.
Beautiful.
Her blue eyes overflowing with tears as he cupped her face between trembling hands.
He remembered every second.
Every heartbeat.
Every word.
"I love you."
The confession echoed through the hall exactly as it had that night.
He leaned forward.
Pressed his forehead against hers.
Held her as though he could keep the entire world away with nothing but his arms.
He kissed her.
Softly.
Desperately.
Like a man trying to memorize paradise before exile.
For one impossible moment...
everything felt real again.
She was still here.
Still his.
Still smiling through tears.
Then...
something changed.
Her smile disappeared.
So suddenly it frightened him.
The warmth in her eyes faded.
Replaced by something he had never seen directed at him before.
Disappointment.
Heartbreak.
Anger.
She stepped away from his embrace.
Violently.
His hands reached for her instinctively.
"Juvia..."
She slapped them away.
"No."
Her voice shook.
Not with fear.
With pain.
"So this is all Juvia was worth to you?"
Gray's entire body froze.
"W-what...?"
Tears streamed freely down her face.
"You said you loved Juvia..."
She laughed.
A hollow, broken sound.
"...but not enough."
Every word landed like a knife.
"If you had truly loved me..."
she cried,
"...you would have fought for us!"
Gray shook his head frantically.
"I did—"
"No!"
Her voice shattered the room.
"You fought everyone except destiny."
She took another trembling step backward.
"You chose my future without asking me."
Another.
"You decided I would be happier without you."
Another.
"You never let me choose you."
Gray could barely breathe.
"I couldn't let you die..."
"You didn't let me live!"
she screamed.
Silence followed.
Crushing.
Merciless.
Juvia's shoulders trembled beneath quiet sobs.
"You were selfish..."
she whispered.
"So selfish."
Gray's eyes widened.
"I wanted to carry your pain."
"You wouldn't let me."
"I wanted to share your curse."
"You wouldn't let me."
"I wanted every tomorrow beside you..."
Her voice finally broke.
"...and you stole every single one."
Gray reached toward her again.
His own tears blurring his vision.
"I'm sorry..."
"I'm so sorry..."
"I had no choice..."
She looked at him.
And somehow...
that hurt even more.
Because there was no love left in her eyes.
Only exhaustion.
"I hate you."
Gray stopped breathing.
"I hate what you did to us."
Another tear rolled down her cheek.
"I hate that I loved you with everything I had..."
Her lips trembled.
"...because you didn't love me enough to stay."
"No..."
The word barely escaped him.
"No... please..."
Footsteps echoed behind him.
Gray turned.
Erza.
Levy.
Gajeel.
Mira.
Lisanna.
Cana.
Every one of them stood watching him.
Not with anger.
With disappointment.
Erza stepped forward first.
Her scarlet eyes never left his.
"You made the greatest mistake of your life, Gray."
The words struck harder than any blade.
Levy's voice came next.
Gentle.
Heartbroken.
"The curse was cruel..."
A tear slipped down her face.
"But Juvia loved you so much..."
Her voice cracked.
"Why did you refuse the life she was begging to share with you?"
Gajeel folded his arms.
His expression unreadable.
"You never deserved her."
Cana's jaw tightened.
"I'll never forgive you."
She looked directly into his eyes.
"You broke the strongest heart I've ever known."
Mira lowered her head sadly.
"You protected her body..."
Her eyes met his again.
"...but who protected her heart?"
Even Lisanna...
who rarely judged anyone...
whispered quietly,
"You left her alone."
Their voices began overlapping.
Again.
And again.
And again.
"You never chose her."
"You gave up."
"You abandoned her."
"You weren't strong enough."
"You broke her."
"You broke her."
"You broke her."
Gray covered his ears.
"Stop..."
The voices only grew louder.
"STOP!"
Then...
everything disappeared.
Everyone...
except Juvia.
She stood alone in endless darkness.
Looking at him one final time.
There were tears on her face.
But none in her voice anymore.
Only resignation.
"I won't forgive you."
Gray collapsed to his knees.
"Please..."
She smiled.
A smile emptier than hatred.
"Even your love wasn't enough to save me from my loneliness."
Another step away.
"You decided..."
Her voice became distant.
"...that I was never worth choosing."
Gray crawled toward her desperately.
"No!"
"I chose you every single day..."
Her silhouette faded into darkness.
"And you..."
She was almost gone.
"...never chose me."
"JUUVIA!!"
Gray shot upright in bed with a violent gasp.
His heart pounded so hard it hurt.
His chest burned.
His breathing came in short, ragged breaths that refused to steady.
For a long moment...
he couldn't remember where he was.
Only that she'd left him.
Again.
He stumbled out of bed.
Nearly losing his balance before reaching the window.
He threw it open.
Cold night air rushed into the room.
Gray gripped the windowsill with both hands, dragging desperate breaths into aching lungs.
One.
Then another.
Neither enough.
His eyes burned.
Hot.
Relentless.
Before he realized it...
tears were already pouring down his face.
He bowed his head.
His shoulders shaking violently.
"Juvia..."
The whisper broke apart in his throat.
"I'm sorry..."
Another sob escaped him.
"So... so sorry..."
He pressed a trembling hand over his mouth, trying to silence himself.
It didn't work.
"If I had a choice..."
His voice collapsed completely.
"...I would never choose anyone but you."
A tear fell onto the wooden floor.
"Never..."
He squeezed his eyes shut.
"But your life..."
His breathing hitched.
"...will always be worth more than my happiness."
And beneath the silent sky of Magnolia—
with no one there to witness it—
Gray Fullbuster finally broke.
The cold night carried only one sound.
A man weeping...
for the woman he loved enough...
to let her go.
