Summary
Darrow lived in Lykos, an underground colony devoted to the mining of helium-3. Born into a family of Red miners, becoming a Helldiver was all he expected from his future.
The boy had never held great expectations for his own life. He would become a Helldiver, win the Laurel for the Lambdas, marry at fifteen to a kind girl-someone like his childhood friend, Eo-and probably have two or three children. It was nothing extraordinary, but it was a good life for a Red... and hoping for anything more bordered on madness. Everyone knew how the hierarchy of the Society worked.
Yet his life takes an unexpected turn before he even turns fourteen. An accident strikes the mines, and everyone around him believes Darrow's life was lost beneath the rubble. But in the "afterlife," it is not his father waiting for him in the Vale. Instead, Darrow awakens to an entirely different reality.
