Starting From Scratch

Summary:

Todomatsu suffers from amnesia and forgets everything about him and everyone he knows. But maybe a change in perspective could expose feelings nobody knew was there.

Chapter 1: What's Going On?

Chapter Text

The constant beeping was annoying, but seemed pretty ineffective. If the entire point of an alarm clock was to wake somebody up, why were the chirps so low and spread out? He still wanted to make the sound go away, it was enough to wake him up from the sleep he didn't remember falling into. Groggily, he reached out for whatever sleep or snooze button there was so he didn't have to hear it anymore.

But he wasn't met with the relief of silence after finding the device, instead he felt cold metal. The sharp contrast in temperature compared to the warm bed he was in caused his arm to jolt away from what he'd just touched. After realizing he'd have to fully wake up to turn the alarm clock he grumbled with annoyance. He sat up and rubbed his eyes while he had to adjust to the brightness of the room.

He looked over to the beeping machine only to find there wasn't an off button, it wasn't even an alarm clock. It was a tall confusing appliance with far too many buttons and a screen. Looking a little closer he realized it was a heart monitor, just like from the movies, it even made tiny mountains and crevices. Why was there a heart monitor in his room? Was this even his room?

He searched the space around him hoping to find familiarity only to be met with more confusion. The room was littered with tools he couldn't possibly know the use of, thick wires leading from one scary looking machine to another, a large door with a tiny window, and a desk containing papers that were covered in scribblings.

He was lost, he wasn't supposed to be here he thought, he should be...

He should be...

… Where should he be?

Thoughts interrupted by the chirps of the heart monitor increasing in pace. His heart was beating faster. He scanned the room again to find that his bed had a small panel on the side that contained numerous buttons. Most of them showed various ways the bed could be adjusted but what caught his attention was a large red button printed with the word “Help”.

He pressed down on the button. Then he pressed down on it again, and again, each time holding down the button harder and longer than before. He continued to pressure the button until something happened, that being the door handle starting to turn. The door opened revealing a woman in scrubs. Walking into the room she locked eyes with him, her expression showing she was pleasantly surprised.

“Glad to see you've woken up, Todomatsu” she said. But that name meant nothing to him. He didn't reply to her. She walked over to a clipboard on the desk and started reading it's contents.

“That's okay, you don't have to talk right now. You're probably confused after suffering from such a traumatizing accident”. Saying names he doesn't know and talking about accidents he doesn't remember happening, he knew less than he did before she showed up.

“But I really am glad to see you're awake now, we weren't sure how long you were going to be in comatose, you've been asleep for a month.”

“What are you talking about?” He finally responded.

“Ah, it's normal not to remember the accident after experiencing such intense trauma. You were crossing the street but didn't check both ways, and was struck by a car. You hit your head pretty hard on the cement, it took quite a few stitches to fix the damage.”

He felt around his head until he felt the stitches, he cringed from the sharp pain he felt upon touching them. But the stitches were there, this was real.

“Do you want us to call your family Todomatsu? It's nice to have family around during times like this.”

“Todo... Matsu?” He repeated the name, it didn't remind him of anyone. “Why do you keep saying that name?” He asked. Her face shifted from the blank expression she was holding into worry.

“Todomatsu Matsuno, that's your name.” she replied.

“I'm sorry, I don't know what you're talking about.” He said.

"Okay," she sighed, “While you've thankfully awakened from your coma, it seems you're suffering from amnesia. We'll call your brothers and tell them you're awake now, hopefully it'll help you refresh your memory.”

“... Brothers?” He asked.

She moved him to a more comforting room. The bed was cozier, there was a television, and the best part was the window that let in sunlight that gave the room a golden tint. The room was an extremely warm welcome after the bad news he had just received. They gave him a phone and said it was his, but he couldn't remember the password so he set it on the table next to him and quickly forgot about it.

The television only had 10 channels, each one as uninteresting as the next, he'd decided to stay on the infomercial channel. But listening to this man praise a blender was short lived when he heard knocking on the door followed by the twisting of the doorknob. The door opened to reveal the same woman but this time accompanied by a man.

The man was wearing a red hoodie with a green symbol in the center. Upon seeing Todomatsu he grew a smile so charismatic he couldn't look away.

“Totty! You're awake!” The man said before walking over to Todomatsu. “I missed you! The doctor said you have amnesia, but you remember me right? Your Niisan?”

“I-I'm sorry, I don't remember you.” Todomatsu replied. The man's warming grin disappeared and his face twisted from excitement to disappointment. Todomatsu started to feel bad, he wanted to remember but he just couldn't. The man must have noticed Todomatsu's expression change and put on the same smile he had before, but it wasn't the same, it wavered.

“It's okay, really! I can reintroduce myself, I'm Osomatsu. I'm your oldest, coolest, and strongest older brother!” He said.

He had so much charisma, even in a situation as depressing as this. It was admirable. His warm personality was a nice change in mood in comparison to what Todomatsu has been experiencing all day. But something was bothering him.

“You said oldest brother, where is everyone else?” Todomatsu asked.

“Everyone else was out doing something when the hospital called, I was so excited to hear you were awake I came straight here to see you.” Osomatsu said. “But don't worry, everyone will be so happy to see you'll be with us again!”

It was nice to hear Todomatsu was going to have a family to come back to. He thought he would have to go through all of this alone.

“We should be able to discharge you from the hospital, let's get you some clothes so you can get out of that hospital gown.” The doctor said.

Todomatsu moves the blankets off of him and sits at the edge of the bed. He gets onto his feet but his legs are so weak with underuse he almost falls over. Luckily Osomatsu is nearby to catch him.

“Woah! Are you okay Totty?” He asks. Todomatsu latches onto his arm for support to make sure he doesn't fall over.

“Yeah, sorry, I forgot how weak I was.” Todomatsu replies. Osomatsu was definitely stronger than Todomatsu in his current state, so he holds onto Osomatsu while they make their way towards the door.

“Wait, Totty, your phone.” Osomatsu said. Todomatsu looks back to see he didn't remember to take his phone with him. Todomatsu grabs the phone and is met with a look of surprise on Osomatsu's face.

“What's wrong?” Todomatsu asked.

“You used to be glued to that thing all the time, it's weird seeing you almost forget it.” Osomatsu said. Todomatsu thought it was a little stranger hearing that, considering he couldn't even remember the password
