Work Text:
Fwhip leaned back against the slanted roof of the wall surrounding the Grimlands. The chilly air of the incoming night made him shiver a bit and he pulled his jacket around him tight. He wasn't usually the type of guy to sit down and watch the sunset but sometimes it's nice to take a break from the speed, thrill, and responsibility of his life.
Of course, he had no one but himself to blame for his hectic life. He had made this bed and he didn't mind lying in it most days but sometimes he needed a break. And today he had decided that his break would be to enjoy the sunset atop his walls alone.
But someone else had plans that didn't exactly align with Fwhip's relaxation time.
Fwhip heard them before he saw them. They landed heavily with loud feathery swoops of wings.
“Hey, Joey,” Fwhip said without looking behind him. All the mannerisms immediately gave it away as Joey. The sound of feathered wings already lowered it down to three people and Fwhip knew that Pearl and Scott landed lighter than that.
“Hi, Fwhip,” Joey said as he sat down next to Fwhip.
“What brings you here?”
“Just…” Joey stared at Fwhip for a few moments. Fwhip couldn't exactly read his expression but he knew it was one he'd never seen on Joey before. “... Bored.”
“Bored?”
“Yeah… there's really not much for me to do and I felt like annoying my neighbors.”
Fwhip raised an eyebrow at that, “And you didn't go annoy Shrub? I know you two aren't on great terms after everything with Xornoth but I'm sure you're still closer to her than you are to me.”
Joey stared at Fwhip more, searching for the proper words to say to him. He looked at Fwhips deep blue eyes, his unbrushed orange hair with teal streaks throughout. His clothes, still covered in ash from his day of tinkering, the beautiful red of his scarf and the dark gray of his jacket.
There were so many words Joey wanted to say to Fwhip, yet none came out of his mouth.
Joey sighed and looked away at the fading sunset, “Maybe I just wanted to spend time with you, not Shrub…” He mumbled.
“What was that?” Fwhip questioned.
“Shrub’s already asleep! It had to be you,” a small blush crept onto Joey's face. He turned his head away to try and hide his embarrassment from Fwhip.
Fwhip reached out and cupped Joey's face, turning his head back so they were face to face.
“You could just say you want to be with me, we both know Shrub never sleeps this early.” Fwhip's own cheeks were growing slightly pink at this point.
Joey felt his heart skip a beat. The heat of Fwhip's hand on his face was completely clouding his brain. He wasn't prepared for this but his pride told him that he couldn't let Fwhip be the one in control of this situation.
Joey placed his hands on Fwhip's waist, nearly laughing at the way Fwhip's face went from baby pink to ruby red, “Now, don't be getting all prideful thinking that I would come out all this way for you.”
Just like Joey, Fwhip was also very prideful and was not about to play into what Joey was doing. He moved his hand from Joey's face down to around Joey's neck bringing his other hand up to match it in one swift motion.
“Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but I could have sworn you said-” Before he could finish his statement their lips were locked in a kiss.
It definitely wasn't a pretty kiss, nor a long one but after they pulled apart all they could do was stare at each other. Green eyes locked onto blue. Two mouths breathing the same small bit of air between them. No words were said, yet they both understood each other perfectly.
They understood the feelings that they had both felt for months but had never been able to share. But now they were here, together.
And as the sun fell fully below the horizon, welcoming night, their lips were together again. Nothing else mattered in that moment. It was just them, together, with no other worries.
