Chapter 1: What’s the worst thing that could happen? What’s the worst thing you could imagine?

Chapter Text

It was nearing night and the sun set casted a beautiful orange glow on the vampires. The animals were silent, as if they knew of the heated discussion unfolding at the front of the bridge.

Shelby was trying to be the bigger person, but Owen made her head hurt. Owen was spiteful and spoke like he ran the place.  Cleo and Apo somehow ended up in this predicament watching the two spit hellfire at each other.

“Avid wasn’t even that important to anyone!” Snapped Owen crossing his arms. Shelby stared at the ground, unable to look Owen in the eyes.

A wave of emotions erupted in Shelby in the span of five seconds:

1. Anger. Fiery anger burned through Shelby. It started slow, barely noticeable. Controllable. It started soft in her chest. A small amount of rage.

2. But with every passing second, every idiotic word spoken, every uneducated sentence escaping his mouth, every self righteous, bitchy, narcissistic word that escaped his bigot mouth, her rage rose and rose. It made a home in her body and burned her legs.

3. She steady herself, digging her feet into the ground. She wanted to force the anger away. Hide it. But it took over her.

Wicked hatred filled her chest—Shelby felt like she was about to explode. It was hard to suppress what she was feeling while keeping a neutral look on her face. Owen’s voice was not helping.

4. It was so degrading it sent torment into her mind. Or was it the madness? Shelby thought. Whatever it was—It controlled her mind and stopped her from thinking through any actions that she committed. Lethal red hot flashes consumed her brain. It ate away at her.

And she snapped.

5. Her eyes flashed black and she rose her arm and slapped him hard in the face. Owen stumbled back a few steps and a burning imprint of her hand was left in his check. Gasps escaped Apo and Cleo as they looked back and forth at one another. They never in a million years would have thought Shelby to be the one to slap Owen!

“You vile, lonesome, evil little cockroach!” Shelby yelled pointing a sharp finger at Owen. Tears falling from her eyes. As Owen staggered away holding his check. He had always seen her as the soft, sweet vampire—how could she do this?!

“You’re a complete fool!!! Avid…” She called down. She stood up straighter and took a breath. Calming herself down.

Shelby spoke with the utmost confidence. Speaking her words one at a time—

“Avid, was Scott’s Louis.” She looked Owen dead in the eye, and Shelby promised she could see the exact moment this man realized what he had down. No one spoke for a few seconds. Cleo and Apo both confused by Shelby’s statement.

But Owen knew, and that was all that matters. He knew what he had done, what he had took away.

He was no better than the humans he killed. The woman, the men, the children.

If anything…he was worse. At least in Shelby’s opinion.

He knew the damage losing a love one could do. He had learned it!

Owen was left speechless and confused. Regret and guilt clawing at him. He wanted more answers. He needed answers. What did Shelby mean by that. Why am I lying myself… I know what she meant. God..

A puff of smoke appeared and Shelby  turned into a bat—this wasn’t going to happen, please! Owen thought. At the drop of a hat he also transformed into a bat following Shelby to the castle.

“Shelby, please wait-“ he called out still in his bat form, as they were hovering over the waters edge.

“Owen, you… you haven’t even seen the damage you have done—to any of us!!! You have been so caught up in your feelings and your biases you couldn’t even think of the implications your actions would have. I can’t even look at you. You disgust me. I just… I need some space.” Shelby yelled most of her words, but it all changed when she got to biases. It became… sadder. Like she broke saying the rest.

Owen wanted so badly to find out what Shelby meant about Scott. Did he love him? He just had so many questions!

But…

He knew it was her choice, and she needed space. He would not push and he would let her have her time. It was her decision what she wanted to do was up to her.

“What did you… um I mean okay.” Owen mumbled. He watched Shelby fly away, sadness over ran him. He couldn’t go back to the other vampires he left. So he disappeared. That’s what he was good at. He flew to a place where no one would find him.
