Work Text:

Castiel and Dean have talked for days about different options to have a child. Cas brought up asking Rowena for a spell, but Dean quickly shut it down, saying, “We will owe her in the future and I don’t want to owe her shit.”

It was fair enough, and Dean brought up insemination. Cas agreed to this and had Dean’s sperm be chosen since Cas is still an angel, and removal of his grace can be a dangerous process if done wrong. Jack offered to create a new soul and human child based on them since he is God now, but they respectfully declined and wanted to do this journey on their own.

That was when they finally decided to tell Sam and Eileen about their plans. Of course, the couple were excited for them, and they celebrated together by having a night out at the local bar.

Thus, they scheduled an appointment for Dean for a health screening and discussed his medical history. Of course, there wasn’t much because Dean always avoided going to doctors and always found ways to help himself. But, doctors were content enough and had Dean produce a semen sample.

This process wasn’t long, but he had to go in nine more times so the doctors could run more tests. No problem, Dean’s got this. Just a quick jerk off session and go home.

However, his sperm had to be frozen and kept in quarantine for three months so additional screening can be done on Dean to determine if his sperm is viable and eliminates any chances of diseases being transmitted to the person who would carry his kid and the kid themselves. It was an agonizing wait, but the clinic called Dean back after that time for more tests.

So, they drew his blood and sent him on his way.

After a long while, they received a call and got approved. Dean and Cas were ecstatic and began to look for a surrogate with a trusted agency. They didn’t know very many women, and the women they did trust and consider family have passed away from hunting.

They searched for a whole month until they stumbled upon a woman in her early thirties named Bethany Greer, but she went by Beth. Beth is a divorcee and has one child with her ex-husband and has split custody. Beth was the perfect candidate.

Cas called the agency about their selection, and they scheduled a meeting with Beth. Dean and Cas were absolutely excited and couldn’t wait to meet Beth and start their family.

When they pulled in and parked, Cas stopped Dean from exiting the Impala. “What?” questioned Dean incredulously. Cas shot him a soft look, which Dean deflated at. “I can tell you’re nervous, Dean. Are you worried Beth won’t like us?” answered Cas. Dean heaves a heavy sigh, slouching in the driver’s seat. Okay, maybe he is nervous about this.

What if Beth didn’t like him and Cas because of who they are? Would she even want to carry a gay couple’s child?

“Okay, maybe. Can you blame me? I’m just worried she’ll walk out on us if she sees…us.” Dean explained with a furrowed expression. Cas nods slowly to convey nonverbally he understands what Dean is saying. “We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it,” replied Cas in a light tone.

Dean shakes his head, but Cas places a hand on his cheek and turns his head to have him look at him. “If she doesn’t like us, we can continue looking. It will take time, but we have been through worse, love. How about we go in now, okay?” reassured Castiel, running his thumb over his husband’s cheek bone lovingly.

Dean sighs and nods in defeat. Damn Cas for having the right words to say!

The two exit the Impala and head inside to meet up with Beth. The husbands check in with the front desk and a woman named Ruth Middleton who has been handling their case meets them just five minutes later. She guides Dean and Cas to a door and stops before it and turns to them. “Alright, Beth is inside. Do you have any questions or concerns before we go in and meet her?” Ruth asks in a light hearted tone.

Cas looks to Dean, who is shaking his head slowly. Ruth opens the door for the husbands, and then they enter carefully. At a table in a chair, Beth looked up and smiled at Dean and Castiel as they made their way to her.

Beth was a beautiful woman. She had tanned peach skin with a sleeve tattoo of goldenrod flowers and hyacinth flowers on her upper right arm. She wore a flowy, striped white and yellow dress complete with brown sandals and gold jewelry. Beth had long brown hair that stopped just shy of the back of her thighs, and her eyes were a vibrant hazel color.

Beth stood up and held her hand out to Castiel and Dean. “Hi, I’m Beth! You two are Dean and James Winchester!” exclaimed Beth as she shook each man’s hand. “Oh please, call me Jimmy!” Cas answered with a chuckle and higher tone of voice that his vessel, Jimmy had when Jimmy was still alive. Dean and Cas thought it best to keep using Jimmy’s first name when they did legal and medical stuff like this.

The four people sat down and began discussing terms on the pregnancy and whether or not Beth was a perfect surrogate for them. Thankfully, Beth had no issues with Cas and Dean’s relationship and ultimately agreed to be their surrogate, and Cas and Dean would pay for everything.

Ecstatic, Dean and Cas announced to their close friends and family that they had found Beth and that she agreed to be their surrogate. Claire and Jack were pretty excited to have a sibling, and Sam couldn’t wait to be an uncle.

Within no time, Beth scheduled an appointment with Dean and Cas to get inseminated and start the journey of helping Cas and Dean start their family.

Of course, Dean and Cas went with her and she held their hands in excitement for them. After the procedure was done, the doctor instructed Beth to elevate her hips and take a test in two weeks to see if a pregnancy was achieved.

It was an agonizing two weeks for Dean. He was impatient and wanted a family now, but Castiel made sure he kept him busy and even checked in with Beth regularly.

Finally, Beth went over to Cas and Dean’s house after two weeks with an announcement. The treatment was a success, Beth was pregnant with Dean and Cas’s baby!

The couple were beyond happy and excited, they immediately started working on the vacant bedroom upstairs to prepare for the baby. They had painted the walls with pastel green, and even painted a little bee and Impala themed mural where they wanted the crib to go. To say they began to splurge on the nursery was an understatement.

Beth’s pregnancy progressed steadily and overall healthy. Beth came over at Cas and Dean’s house every night for dinner to discuss things about the baby, upcoming checkups, and the birth plan. Beth was wanting to go for a hospital birth, which was alright with Cas and Dean.

No words can begin to describe how happy Dean and Cas were. The first time they heard their baby’s heartbeat and saw their first ultrasound, they both shed tears (Dean won’t admit this, of course). And then, they found out that their baby was a girl. Cas and Dean were delighted, and they immediately went to the store after the doctor’s visit that confirmed her gender and bought all kinds of girly outfits, toys, and accessories.

Claire was happy to hear about having a sister; there were too many men around her. Jack was excited, even visiting more often when Beth came over. When Sam and Eileen found out, they too started buying baby girl items for her.

Now, it was nearing the end of Beth’s pregnancy. Any day now, she could pop.

It was late at night, and Dean and Cas were in bed sleeping (Dean was, Cas doesn’t sleep). Cas was watching Dean sleep when he heard his phone buzzing.

Castiel sat up and grabbed his phone, seeing it was Beth calling him. Cas immediately picked up. “Hello Beth, it’s quite late. Is it happening?” questioned the angel enthusiastically. “Yup! My water broke when I was asleep. I’m headed over to the hospital now.” answered Beth, who was seemingly out of breath.

Cas immediately hung up the phone, and then he turned to Dean and started shaking him. “Dean! Dean, wake up!” He called out softly, the excitement in his voice evident.

Dean snorts, shooting up into a sitting position. “Huh? What? What time is it?” Dean mutters sleepily. Cas was already out of bed and getting dressed, tossing Dean some clothes. “Get dressed. Beth’s water broke!” The angel announces, which snaps Dean out of drowsiness immediately.

They quickly get dressed and rush over to the hospital. They make it in time to see Beth getting her vitals taken.

Labor was agonizingly slow, but the three adults began talking to pass the time. After five hours of active labor, it was time for Beth to push. Dean and Cas each took Beth’s hands as the nurses instructed her to push.

“Come on, Beth! You can do it!” A nurse encouraged. Beth leaned forward and bore down when the next contraction hit, squeezing both of Cas and Dean’s hands as she did so. “Great job, Beth! You’re doing great!” exclaimed Cas, squeezing her hand back.

After twenty more minutes of pushing, nurses grabbed Dean and Cas’s baby once she was fully delivered. The husbands smile widely as a nurse brings their newborn daughter to them and Dean swiftly takes off his shirt like he is instructed to for skin-to-skin contact. The nurse then places her on Dean’s chest. Cas walks over and starts rubbing her back to encourage her to cry, whispering small encouragements to her as he does so.

Finally, the little girl lets out a shrill cry against Dean’s chest. He starts crying and smiling as Cas kneels down beside him to watch the newborn scream her little head off. Then, they felt it.

Love at first sight.

Underneath the hospital lights, it was the moment their daughter had changed their lives.

Cas reached his finger out, and her five little fingers wrapped around his. Cas coos gently at her, smiling and crying with Dean. Beth looks over and smiles at the interaction. Dean looks over at Beth, smiling through his tears. “Thank you. Thank you so much, Beth.” He mutters wetly with a sniffle. Beth nods with a smile tiredly.

Both men look back down at their daughter, and it was at this moment they realized they would love her until the day they die. They will take care of her until she walks down the aisle. People will see the beautiful woman she’ll become, but what Cas and Dean will see is their little girl.

The nurses continue to tend to Beth as she delivers the placenta and to deal with the rest of the afterbirth. A new nurse approaches Cas and Dean as they stare down at their daughter.

“She’s beautiful! What’s her name?” The nurse questions sweetly. Cas and Dean share a look with each other, then back down at the baby who is whimpering. “Her name is Rosemary. Rosemary Joanna Winchester.” Dean states, his eyes never leaving Rosemary as one of her tiny hands paw at Dean and the other squeezes Cas’s finger.

Notes:

And with that, "Destiel: The Songs of Our Lives" has concluded! Thank you all so, so much for sticking around and being patient with me!

I'm so sorry this last installment was so late. I recently started a new job, and I work 5 days a week and it really drains all of the energy out of me. I only get 2 days off, so it's been a real struggle to conjure up the willpower and energy to write. Not only that, I struggled a lot with the plot for this one in particular. I went back and forth with myself with how I wanted to take it, so I finally ended up going with my last option.

What I originally wanted to do was have Castiel and Dean call up Rowena and have a ritual to create a baby with their mixed blood and have Castiel's grace removed to prevent having a Nephilim. But then I was like, "Nah, that'd be too lazy." So, I explored other ideas and finally went with this one. It took way too long for my liking, but I'm just happy I finally got this out.

However, I actually got an idea for a future Destiel fic! I don't want to say too much, b/c I'm not sure if I truly want to go through with it. I have a whole original series I want to write that have my own original characters in it still, and I've been exploring ideas with that in my head for some time now. I will let yall know on my Bluesky page.

Anyways, thank you all so much again for reading my series! I will see yall in future works!
