Work Text:
Blinking awake, Dean groans and rubs his eyes. What time even is it?
Dean turns onto his side to look at the alarm clock on his nightstand. The time read two forty-seven in the morning. Cursing under his breath, he flops onto his back.
“Dean?” A familiar deep voice calls out softly.
Dean turns his head and sees Castiel sitting up with a book in his hands and wearing a concerned expression on his face. “Hey Cas,” mumbled Dean groggily. Cas places his bookmark in his book, shuts it, and places it onto his nightstand. “Are you alright? You typically don’t wake up at this time.” interrogated Cas softly with concern. Dean begins to sit up, nodding his head as a response. He just couldn’t take his mind off of the short dream he had woken up from just now.
It felt so real.
He was playing with a small child with black hair that matched Cas’s own hair. They were giggling as Dean tossed them into the air, his own laughter being filtered into his ears. Dean had caught the child as Cas watched from afar on a blanket. “Be careful with ____, Dean!” Cas had chastised in the dream.
He turned to Cas with the child in his arms after he caught them, a big smile tugging on his face. “Relax, ____ loves it!” Dean fired back, tossing the blurry faced child into the air again as they screamed in delight. “At least stop and come eat!” Cas had called out.
Dean put the child down, then crouched to their eye level. “Wanna race back to Papa?” He asked them. “Yeah! I’ll be faster than you, Daddy!” The child answered.
Dean and the child then ran towards Cas, and Dean made sure to be slower so his child could win. When the child won and successfully beat him to Cas, they turned to see Dean slowing to a stop at the blanket. “I beat you, Daddy!” They yell with a few jumps of triumph. “Yes, you did, you're the winner!” He exclaimed, picking up the child and spinning around as they yelled in joy.
And that was when he woke up.
Dean looks over at Cas, examining his face intently. He tries to better picture the child in the dream by staring at him.
Oh, sweet child.
They would’ve been cute.
Dean continues to stare at Cas, and Cas stares back with a raised brow.
Oh, sweet child.
They would look just like Castiel.
“Dean?” Cas whispers, reaching his hand out and cupping Dean’s cheek. Dean leans into it, his own hand coming up and resting on Cas’s. “I’m good. Just a dream.” He answers with a curt smile. The angel’s features soften, but it still retains hints of worry. “Do you want to talk about it?” He questions his husband.
Dean clenches his jaw in thought. Reluctant, the ex-hunter caves. “There was a kid in my dream,” He replies. Cas nods along, waiting for Dean to continue.
Swallowing, Dean adds, “I was playing with them. I couldn’t tell if it was a girl or boy, but they had your hair and we raced each other to get to you.” Cas hums, absorbing the information. Dean watches his husband’s expression carefully. However, his mind can’t help but begin to wander about having a child with Cas.
They would have a temper like Dean. They would run like Cas. Jump in a pool like Dean. Sing to animals like Cas. Be sensitive like Dean.
“It sounds like a lovely dream, Dean,” Cas concludes, grabbing his book from the nightstand and opening it. The ex-hunter watches his angel husband closely.
That’s it? Nothing to say? Just that it “sounds like a lovely dream?”
Dean’s heart cracks a little from lack of real input on the dream. Dean won’t lie, he’s always wanted a family. Everyone pretty much knows this - even Cas. Damn it, he wants a kid with Cas! The dream just made that want more of a need.
“Cas?” murmured Dean. Cas looks up from his book, turning his head to Dean. “Yes, Dean?” He responds. Dean has a serious expression on his face, and this makes Cas put his book away again. With Cas’s full attention, Dean mutters, “Do you want a kid? With me?” This catches Cas off guard, his eyes widening like saucers.
Silence falls between the couple. Dean’s heart is racing, waiting for Castiel’s response.
Every second that passes makes Dean’s heart break. Maybe Cas doesn’t want kids.
However, Cas smiles gently. “I am open to the idea. We can look at different options when the morning comes.” He states. Dean smiles, his heart fluttering happily. “Really?” He inquires, his smile broadening.
Cas nods. “Yes, Dean. I know how you’ve always wanted a family. We’ve been married for nearly two years now, I’m surprised you didn’t ask me sooner.” The angel admits casually. Dean’s smile never fades as he cuddles up against Cas.
Cas smiles in turn, kissing the top of Dean’s head. “Get some sleep so we can talk about it more later,” He suggests, running a hand through the ex-hunter’s hair. “Fine. Good night, Cas.” whispered Dean blearily. “Sleep well, Dean.” replied the angel.
Dean shuts his eyes, a contented but happy smile on his face. Dean cannot wait for the morning to come.
