Summary
STEM student Test Tube Katz and Law student Cabby Landman were friends, but when you know that there's a point where you have to become Doctor Katz and Attorney Landman, is it worth it to maintain a friendship with the woman that knows you better than yourself? Test Tube didn't think so - how humilliating is it to have someone figure both themselves and you out before you, when that's the entire point of college? Of life? Who does that someone think they are? Better question: WHAT are they?
Except that driving the now neurologist into that train of questions of that was never under Cabby's intentions. Not then - 20 years ago - and not now. All she wanted was to convince herself that she was capable of going beyond her academic life, the dogmatic rule of life that establishes work and money above all, and finding solace for her romantic and selfish desire of feeling like she belongs. She thought she was capable. But oh, how the mighty have fallen! Things aren't fixable now, and the opportunity to defy that - the motivation - grows ever so weaker. Grows hours away, instead of classes. Old and inadequate, unprofessional.
But some things refuse to die. For instance...
The need to have the last word.
