Chapter Text
“What are the odds that you little crows would have your team building here at Shirahama Beach as well?”
Suga, Daichi, Asahi, and Kiyoko were trailing behind the rest of the Karasuno Volleyball Club when they heard a familiar voice behind them. The third-years turned to find themselves face-to-face with the volleyball captain of Aoba Johsai.
“Oikawa,” Daichi said with a polite nod. “What a, erm, pleasant surprise. Where’s the rest of your team?”
“They’re just unpacking the van while I scope the area.”
Despite addressing Daichi, Oikawa’s eyes raked across Suga’s body. Suddenly, Suga felt a bit too exposed in his unbuttoned shirt and swim trunks.
“Well,” Suga said, causing Oikawa’s gaze to snap up to meet his. “We won’t get in your way. We can take the east side and—”
“THE GREAT KING!”
Suga sighed as he watched Hinata rush towards Oikawa in what seemed like a genuine attempt to seem tall and intimidating. The rest of Oikawa’s team started walking onto the sand, and the commotion that erupted between the rival teams was electric.
“I’ll let you handle this,” Suga whispered to Daichi before turning away from the ruckus and taking a stroll along the shoreline. The sun was already preparing to set. Suga had hoped that they would arrive earlier, but traffic and the timing of Hinata’s bathroom breaks were not on their side.
“It’s getting late, isn’t it?” A sing-sing voice said from behind him. “I wish we didn’t pick a beach in the middle of fucking nowhere.”
Suga turned around ready with a retort, only for his jaw to drop at the sight of a shirtless Oikawa. He never shied away from admiring the other boy’s physique on the court, but seeing it bare and up-close was something else.
“Be nice,” Suga said, hoping that the screeching halt of his thoughts wasn’t too obvious. “This beach is great.”
Oikawa smirked. “Kodanohama Beach is better.”
“What are you, a tourist? Or do you just like crowds?”
“Now, now, Mr. Refreshing,” Oikawa replied, striding forward and walking past Suga. “Just because our taste differs doesn’t mean you shouldn’t play nice.”
Suga quickened his pace to match the captain’s. He poked the Oikawa’s side, eliciting a yelp. Oikawa hopped away from Suga’s finger, his feet dipping slightly into the water.
“What did you call me?”
“Mr. Refreshing,” Oikawa replied after regaining his composure.
“What do you mean by that?”
“You’re just a refreshing sight to see during matches.”
Suga turned to look at Oikawa, searching for any sign that he was being made fun of. Oikawa looked at him with gentle amusement.
“Alright…”
“Let’s take a seat here.”
“But our teams are—”
“The sun is about to set. They can figure out the logistics of a bonfire without us, don’t you agree?”
Despite being confused about Oikawa’s motives, Suga sat with him a meter away from the water. The Karasuno setter absentmindedly dug his fingers into the powdery sand, sifting through them in an attempt to ease his jitters about being beside someone he so deeply admired.
Suddenly, a hand stopped his from fidgeting. Suga kept his eyes trained on the ocean before him, which reflected the orange sun. The warmth of sunlight was being overtaken by the coolness of the salty breeze, but even the wind could not stop the fire erupting in his body at the feeling of Oikawa’s hand on his.
“I see you looking at me during matches,” Oikawa said.
“Oh.” Suga wished for nothing more than a wave to come and pull him into the depths of the water. “What makes you think I’m looking at you?”
“Do you notice me looking at you, too?”
At those words, Suga turned his head to find Oikawa already staring at him.
“Um…”
“Give me your number.”
“Uh, I can’t.”
“Oh.”
For the first time that he’s seen, a flash of doubt appeared on Oikawa’s composed features. The grip on Suga’s hand loosened. Before Oikawa could pull away, Suga entwined their fingers together.
“I mean, I lost my phone when I went on a hike with Daichi and Asahi. Can I give you my email instead?”
Oikawa’s mouth twitched, and Suga could tell that he was trying not to laugh.
“How very business-minded of you.”
“Look,” Suga muttered. “Do you want to keep in touch or not?
“Fine,” Oikawa said with a soft chuckle. He fished for his phone with his free hand and handed it to Suga.
Suga entered his email and sent a simple “hi” through Oikawa’s.
“There. Now you can ask me out.”
“No way.”
Suga tried to yank his hand back only for Oikawa to catch it.
“What do you mean ‘no way?’”
“I just mean that I already made the first move!”
Suga rolled his eyes. “Aren’t you wooed enough by your fangirls?”
Oikawa tugged hard enough at Suga for the latter to lose balance, forcing them to be shoulder to shoulder. Suga felt Oikawa’s breath against his ear.
“I want to know what it’s like to be wooed by you.”
Suga shuddered. Before he could reply, a loud voice reached their ears.
“Oi, Shittykawa, get your ass over here!”
“That’s our cue to return,” Suga said, a bit quieter than he intended to.
“Yep,” Oikawa said, standing up and offering his hand to Suga once more to help him stand as well.
The two walked back towards their teams. Before they got in earshot of the rest of the boys, Oikawa spoke.
“Looking forward to your message,” he said under his breath before raising his voice. “And what does Iwa-chan need help with?”
Suga walked towards the rest of Karasuno, who were busying themselves with the food and drinks. Kageyama locked eyes with him and spoke.
“You’re red,” Kageyama said bluntly. “Are you sunburnt already?”
Suga slapped his hands against his cheeks.
“No,” he blurted out.
Kageyama cocked his head, clearly confused. Suga felt a slender arm snake around his waist. Kiyoko pulled him off to the side where the rest of the Karasuno third-years were.
“What did Oikawa want?” Asahi whispered, his voice full of anxiety.
“Yeah, are you okay?” Daichi said with a firm voice.
Kiyoko laughed softly before tightening her grip on Suga.
“He’s fine,” she said.
“Yeah,” Suga said, his thoughts hazy. “He sure is.”
Oikawa,
I can’t believe you’re making me do this. If you had any balls, you’d have asked me out the moment you held my hand.
Furthermore, I can’t believe I’m doing this, but here it is: would you like to go on a date with me?
If the answer is yes, please reply enthusiastically by declaring your love for me. If you somehow changed your mind, let’s forget about this whole thing and act like we didn’t share that moment together. No pressure, you’ll only be breaking my heart completely if you do that!
Kidding aside, I’d love to see you out of the context of a game. I want to know what makes you tick, so that you can be more than a pretty face to me.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Or not? We’ll see.
Best wishes, Mr. Refreshing.
