Chapter Text
It’s been exactly 35 days, 6 weeks and 840 hours.
In the beginning, Wednesday was unsure if Enid would ever recover. The nightmares when she woke up screaming in the middle of the night, the way she took some minutes to remember how to do daily chores, like brush her hair or put on her shoes. It was unsettling to Wednesday to see Enid struggling to comeback to her normal life since she found her.
She spent two months tracking Enid, studying spells in ancient books, trying to keep her hopes up, imagining if it was too late to help. She wouldn’t say it out loud to Thing or Fester, who were her companionship in the mission, but the more she looked for, the more she worried.
They went to New York, passing the border and heading to Canada, to Ontario, Quebec, heading north, when Wednesday received a tip from Agnes, who were digging in online outcasts communities about uncommon activities around. First, Wednesday was skeptical about the efficiency of the internet and the group, but them Agnes sent a post that caught her attention. A werewolf spotted at Northwest, Yellowknife. The post saying that it was not uncommon to see them in packs, but very specific to see a lone one.
First, Wednesday cursed the person who made the post, knowing that could be a potential information for hunters too. Then, Wednesday hurried to tell Thing and Fester, and they quickly made a plan together. They were almost in Churchill, the trip would take a few days.
While they proceeded, the seer realized she didn’t knew what could find her there, or even if her attempt would work. She glanced a book laying on the top of a pile of papers, in an improvised work space she made it in one of their camps. The scraped leather cover holding the possibility of bring Enid back. It was a witchcraft book that Morticia possessed in the Addams family personal library, shoved in a bag with other books about outcasts in the beginning of their seeking for the werewolf, all the collection leaded to that one specifically. There was a spell in Latin, only one who seemed to fit in the situation. The very old book giving the information: Rescind transformation.
Wednesday was aware that it wasn’t the best plan. It was risky, a shot in the dark and not at all how she normally proceed. But they didn’t display of time. Enid didn’t. For that situation, outcasts transfiguration spells, as read in the cover, would work. She hoped, she need it.
When they got to Yellowknife, Plant Lake, it wasn’t hard to figure that the werewolf mentioned in the post was really Enid, because colorful fur was found in trees and trails. They followed tracks, and the traces were being more and more obvious.
Then, a very loud howl filled in the forest, Wednesday followed ahead, only to see the big werewolf already looking right into her eyes. Scared, and wild, and angry, and hurt, all at the same time.
It weren’t easy to calm her down, they took a while. It seemed that Enid didn’t noticed it was Wednesday in front of her, only a threat. This made Wednesday’s heart ache a bit, and as a person who didn’t cared about discomforts, she didn’t enjoyed that one.
Unwilling her original plan, that didn’t involved use anything against Enid, Wednesday were obligated to let Fester use a tranquilizer, enough to make Enid relax, but not to knock her down completely.
Them, strictly following the instructions and researches of the outcasts transfiguration spell, Wednesday recited the words in Latin, keeping all the optimism she could find in her body up.
Please, please, please, please.
So, like a lighting struck, a very bright flash came thru Enid’s direction, blinding Wednesday and Fester. The earth trembled a bit and Wednesday felt like the surroundings were burning. A few seconds later, when she could finally see properly, Enid was there again, human. Her body laying on the dirt, curled against herself.
Thing was already there, and once more, he ran towards the girl and covered her with a sheet.
It don’t need to be said that Wednesday eyes sparkled at the vision of see Enid again after what happened that night in Nevermore. She slowly walked in her friend direction, almost like she was afraid of her own movements. When she got close, she bend down to her side, touched her face gently.
Don’t startle me like this again. It was her first thought.
So yes, she was counting the days, since day one. Making sure Enid would have all the backup she needed. Wednesday silently took the role of her watcher, not that she would ever admit that out loud. She made graphics, notes about her health, body and mental. Everything to keep the pace and help Enid to recover.
Deep down, Wednesday felt really guilt about how things went. Enid made a sacrifice for her, and now she was paying the price. To be honest, Enid wasn’t the only one having nightmares, and as much Wednesday wouldn’t complain about an old good bad dream, she didn’t want to have them about Enid, and what would happen if she couldn’t find her ever again.
“Wends?”
Wednesday was taken from her thoughts. She was holding one of her books, distracted, but Enid voice made her look away, founding Enid’s blue eyes staring at her.
“What? Are you okay? Need something?”
“No, it’s.. You need to stop over react every time I call our your name.”
Wednesday tried to hide the flush in her cheeks. She stood up from the bench she was sitting in the quad.
“I wasn’t over reacting. It was a total normal response.”
Enid smiled, making Wednesday avoid the stare and grab her stuff.
“I was just looking for you. It’s almost dinner time.”
Since Enid came back, they were having all their meals together. Actually, in the first weeks, Enid wasn’t feeling okay to be around a bunch of people, and the noise that the students made were too much for her. So Wednesday brought her breakfast, lunch and dinner, and they could eat together at their dorm.
“You’re sure you want to eat at the cafeteria?” – Wednesday asked.
“It’s fine. Promise.”
So, they both went inside, walking down Nevermore halls and classrooms, but passing by some weird students faces as well.
See, what you need to know about Enid’s return, is that everyone at the school had something to say about the story. Everybody knew what happened, and how Enid saved Wednesday that night, so the news about her being an alpha spread like fire. It was well know by them that Wednesday was able to help Enid to return to her human form because of an antique spell in a very old book from “creepy Addams family” library.
But the thing is, some students, mostly werewolves, didn’t want Enid back at Nevermore. They thought she was dangerous and unpredictable, and were frightened by the amount of power an alpha werewolf could have, since there was no records of alphas among the furs in the history of the school.
Of course, the only thing they could do was give angry looks towards her, if they said something in her face, it was the same as ask for a stab in their guts, since Wednesday was very aware of their discontentment.
While she was away, her parents took the lead of the school board, and Morticia became the headmaster, with Gomez by her side, obviously. When she came back with Enid, Thing and Fester, the classes hadn’t started, but not so far either. They spent a couple weeks in the Addams family mansion to make sure Enid were comfortable and well enough to comeback, so they took sometime and settled a day to return in their own terms. To be honest, Wednesday couldn’t care less about the classes, but Enid did. Nevermore was her home after all.
She first heard about the students talk when Bianca went to visit Enid in the mansion:
“That’s stupid. And at a whole new level for the patterns of the student body of Nevermore.”
“I agree, but you can’t start a fight with these people, Wednesday. It’s not wise.” – Bianca replied.
They were talking in the living room, waiting for Enid to finish showering.
“I’m not starting anything.” – Wednesday replied.
“Good.”
“Obviously they were the ones who started.”
“Jesus…” - Bianca sighted. She massaged her temples. – “I shouldn’t have tell you. I know you want to take care of Enid, but you should let your parents deal with that if anything get serious.”
“I-I never said I want to take care of Enid.” – Wednesday cleared her throat and walked to the other side of the room. Bianca snorted. – “But it doesn’t matter, they don’t have the power to decide who stays or not in Nevermore.”
“Well, yes, but…” - Bianca heard footsteps coming thru the stairs and stopped talking. She didn’t want to upset Enid, and of course, Wednesday was giving her a death glare as a warning to her to shut up.
“Oh my God, Bianca!” – Enid smiled, she tried to hurry up and hug the siren, but her pace wasn’t the same, she was kind of learning again how to use her legs.
So Bianca went to her, opening her arms and embracing the other girl.
“I’m so glad to see you’re okay. Agnes told me and Ajax everything during the past months, I’m sorry we couldn’t do much to help, if your psycho roommate weren’t so stubborn, maybe we could actually join her in the searching. – Bianca glared Wednesday, who replied with “You were only going to slow me”. – “But I’m relief everything went fine, we were really worried. How you’re feeling?”
“It’s been… challenging. It’s weird, to have my body back. Not that I didn’t believe Wednesday couldn’t help me, but… Ms. Capri said otherwise, and I really believed on her. I got scared.”
“Yeah, Ms. Capri could give some good explanation, but I heard she’s not coming back to Nevermore this year.” – Bianca said.
“And why is that?” – Wednesday asked, feeling something weird about this sudden vanish of the music teacher.
“I don’t know exactly, but her name isn’t in the list of hired professors for this semester.” – Bianca replies, she guides Enid to sit.
They both went to the sofa, while Wednesday was wondering if Capri lied to Enid on purpose.
“Are you okay to be back?” – Bianca asked Enid directly, but Wednesday snapped out of her thoughts about Capri to make sure the siren isn’t going to say anything about what they were talking before. Bianca sided eye Wednesday, trying to say “Don’t need to freak” with her look.
“Yes, I just… need a couple more days.” – Enid smiled lightly. – “It’s just weird. Sometimes my body don’t feels like it belongs to me. It’s kind of a bummer, I don’t know. I have this feeling I’m learning to be in control again. The sensation of being a wolf for so long still there, still close.”
She didn’t seemed sad, but there was something in her expression that caught Wednesday’s attention. It was the moment she realized that maybe Enid could take a longer time to be fine again. She felt useless, and the waves of guilty slightly hit her. She locked her jaw, but said next:
“Of course. You’ve been through a lot, Enid. Much more than anyone. It’s recent, new. But you’re also strong, and fierce, and there’s nothing, or anyone…” – Wednesday looked to Bianca for a second. – “To stop you. You will get your life back without this episode pursuing you. You’re in control.”
For a moment, the living room went silent, but Enid was looking to Wednesday with admiration in her eyes. The truth is she could never blame Wednesday for what happened. Deep down, she knew she would do everything over again to save her best friend, her pack.
“Wow, Addams. You should write “get well soon” cards.” – Bianca said.
“And you should go before I release my hell hound on you.”
Bianca laughed. She stood up, followed by Enid.
“I know you don’t have one of those. Right?” – The siren whispered the last part to Enid, who shook up her head as no. – “Okay, I’m going. Tomorrow I have fence practice really early.”
“Yeah, and you should practice as much as you can before I comeback.” – Wednesday walked towards the front door of the mansion.
“Right.” – Bianca rolled her eyes. – “And when is that?”
“Well, I told Wednesday she could be back first if she wanted…”
“Which was not an option.” – Wednesday interrupted the blonde.
“But we agreed we could be there before the welcome celebration.”
“Nothing like a social event for the rain of despair Wednesday Addams.” – Bianca teased the goth, who only deathly stared her. – “Okay, I’m going. Again, I’m happy you’re okay, Enid. And yes, you’re going to be fine a hundred percent.”
They hugged one last time and Wednesday convinced Enid to wait while she took Bianca outside, where Lurch was waiting to get her back to Nevermore.
They went out, Wednesday closed the door behind her and they went down the stairs.
“She seems fine, even with the difficulty she mentioned, and you two look like an old married couple now more than ever…”
Before Wednesday get embarrassed (or deny) she said:
“I need you to spread the news that if someone try to threat Enid, the unfortunate being will experiment a few new daggers I bought in Canada.”
They stopped at the car entry, Lurch waiting with the door open.
Bianca stared at Wednesday for a few seconds, her face still.
“I’m pretty sure they don’t need a warn for that.”
“Good. So will be easier.”
“But as I was saying when we were inside… They might not have the power to determinate who stays, but they can get it.”
Bianca didn’t waited for Wednesday response, she got in the car and Wednesday watched the vehicle getting out the big Addams mansion gate.
They can try their luck.. or unluck.
