Maybe Mr. Wheeler watches TV at an egregious volume in the morning, and maybe Mrs. Wheeler can be a bit of a drinker. Still, the Wheelers have been super accommodating. Nancy is, as always, very sweet and considerate to Will, and Holly’s imagination is downright adorable. Mike is… well, Mike is Mike. Which is great. Was great.
Or: Things got better after California, until they suddenly got worse. Distant. Will tries to make sense of it.

“Shit, I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have knocked. Go back to bed, I’m sorry,” Will repeatedly apologized. “What, no, it’s okay,” Mike hummed in response. “I shouldn’t have woken you,” Will kept apologizing. “Will, please come here,” Mike pleaded. Will froze in place. He’d never heard that tone from him; it made his face heat up, and he was begging Mike not to notice.

"Shit, sorry,” the boy mutters, already crouching down to pick up his books. When he straightens back up and takes out his headphones, Will is able to get a better look at the person standing in front of him. He’s maybe 4 inches taller, with deep chocolate eyes and a freckle-covered face.
A voice snaps him out of his thoughts, “I’m Mike. Mike Wheeler.”
Will just stares at him in awe, trying to shake off the feeling of butterflies in his stomach. His palms feel weirdly sweaty.
“I’m Will,” he manages to get out, “Will Byers.”
“Cool…” Mike says, studying him for a second longer than seems necessary. “Well, see you around.”
“See you...” Will mutters as Mike walks away.

Will and Jane just moved to town from California when Will runs into some guy. Funny how he keeps seeing him around everywhere. He totally doesn't like him or anything. That would be absurd.

Avid was not happy. Quite the opposite, but in the way that pure untampered anxiety clutched at the fibers of his very being. He was terrified. And as he should be, standing on the other side of the bridge that led to the Goldsmith manor. This was quite possibly the worst thing to happen to him, right alongside the scratch that was burning his neck at that very moment. Fear had its claws wrapped around Avid and he had no way out.
The “Agreement” was a set of terms alongside the manor of vampires and the townsfolk of Oakhurst. The Goldsmith Coven protected the valley and didn’t kill but in exchange humans got sent to the manor to work. Everyone knew that entailed being drank from even though it was not stated.
Curse Avid’s never ending bad luck as he had drawn the short straw. Living in Oakhurst as a sick man was bad enough, being sent to what was essentially the slaughter…
