Chapter Text
The common room of the Avengers Tower was quieter than usual.
Tony Stark sat on one of the couches, lazily scrolling through holographic blueprints while pretending not to pay attention to the argument happening only a few feet away. Bruce Banner leaned against the kitchen counter, arms crossed, looking more uncomfortable with every passing second. Clint was cleaning one of his bows, though his eyes kept drifting toward the elevator. Thor stood near the large windows overlooking Manhattan, his expression unreadable.
Only Natasha Romanoff seemed completely calm..At least on the outside.
Steve had called everyone together nearly twenty minutes ago, saying he had "someone important" with him. Judging by the tension in his voice, nobody had expected good news.
The elevator chimed. Every conversation stopped.
Steve Rogers stepped into the room first. Behind him came a tall man with long brown hair, a scruffy beard, and a metal left arm that gleamed beneath the lights of the Tower. James Buchanan Barnes. Or rather... The Winter Soldier.
No one moved. No one spoke. Tony was the first to break the silence. "You've got to be kidding me."
Steve didn't even look at him. "He isn't here to fight."
"No?" Tony stood. "That's funny, because the last time I saw him he was trying to kill us."
Bucky's expression didn't change. His blue-gray eyes slowly swept across the room, analyzing every exit, every weapon, every person. He looked more like a soldier entering hostile territory than a man arriving somewhere safe.
Natasha watched him carefully. The hair was longer. His face carried more scars than before. His shoulders were heavier somehow, as if decades of pain had settled into them. But it was him. James. Her James.
For one impossible second she forgot how to breathe..Memories crashed into her all at once. A laugh echoing through snowy forests. A pair of warm hands wrapped around hers. "Dobroye utro, Natalia." A dance in a tiny apartment with music playing from an old radio. His smile. His promise. "I'll come back for you." She blinked. The memories disappeared just as quickly as they had come.
Steve kept talking.."...He's free now. HYDRA's programming is gone."
Tony folded his arms. "So we're just supposed to trust that?"
"I trust him."
"That's not the same thing."
"No," Clint agreed quietly. "It isn't."
Bucky remained completely silent. Natasha noticed the tiny twitch of his metal fingers. He was expecting a fight. Expecting someone to attack him.
He wasn't looking at anyone for very long. Until... His eyes landed on her. Time stopped. Her heart slammed against her ribs. Surely... Surely he'd know. Even after everything... Even after decades...
His eyes narrowed ever so slightly. Not with recognition. With caution. Like she was just another stranger. Another potential threat. Nothing more. Natasha felt something inside her crack. Just a little. Just enough to hurt.
Bucky looked away. That was it. He didn't know her. Of course he didn't. HYDRA had taken almost everything from him. She had known that before Steve brought him here. Knowing it... And experiencing it... Were two completely different things.
Tony noticed the silence between them. "You know him?"
Natasha looked at Tony. "No." The lie came effortlessly. She had spent most of her life lying. This one hurt more than all the others combined.
Steve frowned slightly but didn't question it.
Bruce stepped forward carefully. "We're not saying you aren't welcome here," he said to Bucky. "It's just... everyone needs time."
Bucky nodded once. "I understand." His voice was rough. Quiet. Almost unfamiliar. She remembered that voice whispering Russian words against her hair. Now it sounded like gravel.
Thor finally spoke. "If Captain Rogers believes this man deserves another chance, then I shall honor his judgment."
Tony sighed dramatically. "Great. Democracy."
Steve ignored him.."Bucky's staying here."
"The hell he is," Tony replied.
"It's temporary."
"My insurance company is going to love that."
Clint finally stood.."You know what worries me?" Everyone looked at him. "It's not whether he'll snap again." Bucky's gaze shifted toward Clint. "It's whether he even wants to be here."
Silence.
Bucky answered honestly. "I don't." No one expected that. "I don't know who I am." His voice remained flat. "I don't know what I'm supposed to do."
Steve looked at him. "You don't have to figure everything out today."
"No." Bucky looked around the room again. "But none of them trust me."
Nobody answered. Because he wasn't wrong. Natasha finally spoke. "They don't know you." Every head turned toward her. She immediately wished she had stayed quiet.
Tony raised an eyebrow. "And you do?"
"No." Another lie. "I just know what it's like when people only see the worst thing you've ever done."
The room fell silent. Even Tony couldn't argue with that. Steve gave her a grateful smile. Bucky looked at her again. Longer this time. There was something strange in his expression. Confusion. As though her voice had stirred something deep inside him. A flicker. Gone before either of them could catch it.
Half an hour later the meeting was over. Tony disappeared into his workshop. Bruce excused himself to the lab. Thor returned to Asgardian business. Clint offered Natasha a questioning look. She ignored it. She couldn't explain what had just happened. She barely understood it herself. She stood near the coffee machine, staring into a cup she hadn't touched.
She heard footsteps behind her. Steve. "You okay?"
"I'm fine."
"You've said three words in the last thirty minutes."
"I'm tired."
Steve smiled. "Liar."
She almost laughed. Almost. "I've known you too long."
"I know."
Steve leaned against the counter. "What do you think?"
She knew exactly what he meant. About Bucky. About bringing him here. About trusting him. She looked toward the hallway where Bucky had disappeared. "I think..." She searched for the right words. "I think he looks exhausted."
Steve nodded. "He is."
"He doesn't sleep?"
"Not much."
She looked down into her coffee. Neither had James. Not after the missions. Not after the nightmares. Some things never changed.
"I've never seen him this lost."
Her chest tightened. Neither had she. Not even after the Red Room. Back then... He had still smiled.
Steve sighed quietly. "I don't know how to help him."
Natasha almost answered automatically. He likes coffee with too much sugar. He hums when he can't sleep. He hates thunderstorms. He— No. That James no longer existed. "I wish I had an answer."
Steve nodded. "So do I."
—
Steve led Bucky down one of the long hallways. "This'll be your room." Bucky looked around. Simple. Clean. Safe. Too safe. "You don't have to stay if you don't want to."
"I know."
"But I'd like you to."
Bucky sat carefully on the edge of the bed. Everything felt wrong. Soft mattress. Open windows. No restraints. No orders. No mission. No handler. Silence.
Steve stood awkwardly in the doorway. "If you need anything..."
"I won't."
Steve frowned.."What?"
"I won't need anything." It sounded less like confidence... And more like a man who had learned never to ask.
Steve's heart sank. "You don't have to do this alone anymore."
Bucky looked away. "I've always done it alone."
Steve wanted to argue. Instead he simply nodded. "I'll see you tomorrow."
The door closed. Bucky was finally alone. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. His head hurt. Ever since entering the Tower... Something had felt... Wrong. No. Familiar.
There had been a woman. Red hair. Green eyes. Calm voice. The moment she'd spoken... Something had flashed through his mind. Not a memory. Just... A feeling. Warm hands. Snow. A laugh. A Russian voice calling— ...Nothing. He pressed his fingers against his temples. "Who are you...?" There was no answer. Only silence
