Summary
When Bucky told Yelena that the phone call “went poorly”, he meant that it had ended with the both of them damn near sobbing, even as they shouted at each other over the phone. It was like their usual bickering, except it was real, and that argument, if anything, was the one that cemented to Bucky that this was truly over. That he would probably spend the rest of his life watching Sam on the news, tall and broad and confident, and be able to think only of the way Sam had sobbed in his arms after the cameras and flashing lights were finally gone, all out of the beautiful words he used in his speeches, the night that Karli had died.
He was expecting aliens, when he saw the satellite image of that spaceship. What he wasn’t expecting was for, after a good ten minutes of the team arguing about what to do, the Tower security alarm to alert of a breach.
He especially wasn’t expecting Sam Wilson, Joaquin Torres, and Scott Lang, waiting in the common room of the tower.

Sam shows up at the Watchtower with word of imminent threat to the multiverse fourteen months after he and Bucky broke up. Bucky's still very much in love with him; and so, maybe, is Sam.
