Work Text:

You’re in your bathroom doing your makeup, Charles is in the bedroom, getting dressed or something, probably struggling to find cufflinks or a nice tie as he always does.

The two of you are going out tonight, some media event Charles wanted you to come to for emotional support, which you of course agreed to, because it’s a chance to dress up, and hang out with Charles- and let’s be honest, you don’t mind being arm candy every now and then.

You’ve done your hair up in a shiny blowout, and are already dressed, a sleek, dark red maxi-dress to match the Ferrari colours. You’ve saved makeup for last because it doesn’t normally take you long, just a bit of concealer, highlighter, blush and eye makeup, however today you decided to mix it up with a bit of lipliner and lipstick.

And it all goes downhill from there.

The lipliner is nice, it’s a good shade and it makes you feel good, until you put on lipstick and it just looks weird.

Your lips are too matte, you can see each asymmetrical contour and shape, the soft hair on your face is somehow more noticeable and everything is suddenly so wrong, and your concealer is the wrong shade and you’ve too much blush, and your lashes are clumpy and you try to wash the lipstick off but it just smudges and you just look a mess. Lipstick on a pig. It’s all wrong and you feel ugly, no. Wrong. You don’t look like yourself, it’s all off and the person in the mirror is looking at you with disgust. That person knows you’re a fake, you’re ugly and horrible and weird.

Before you know it, tears are ploughing streaks in your makeup and your choking back sobs.

Mon Chou, Are you ready?” Charles gentle voice interrupts your wallowing as he knocks on the door before coming in.

His eyes widen when he spots you, before his face softens and his eyebrows knit together.

fuck, he’s gorgeous

You wonder how someone so ugly and wrong as you ended up with someone as beautiful as him.

“Baby, what happened?” He asks, moving to stand infront of you, his hands cupping your face.

“I look weird.. I’m ugly” Is all you manage to say, unsure how to word this weird feeling you have. “It’s all wrong, I look wrong, something’s messed up with my face.”

Charles wipes your tears with a gentle swipe of his thumb, stroking your cheek as he does so.

“Oh, ma pauvre,” He murmurs, pulling you against his chest and wrapping his arms around you. “I know it doesn’t feel like it right now, but you’re not ugly, you don’t look weird, or wrong, your mind is just being mean to you right now.” He mumbles, kissing your forehead, “But you have to listen to your heart, and listen to me.”

You hum softly, leaning in to his touch, allowing the rhythmic thrumming of his heart to ground you.

“You’re the most beautiful woman alive, an earth-treading star. I’ve never met anyone even remotely as gorgeous and stunning as you. You’re amazing and wonderful inside and out and every day I wonder how I got so lucky to have you.”

You sniffle softly and look up at him. “You’re just saying that.”

“Of course not, I’m being honest, baby, I love you.”

You seem to think on it for a while before sighing, pulling away and looking up at Charles, who cups your face in his hands.

“Okay.” You mumble.

He scoffs softly, “okay? That’s it?”

You just smile, feeling a bit better now after spending time with Charles.

“We don’t have to go, you know, we can just stay in.” He says, wiping under your eyes again.

You shake your head, “no, no, it’s fine, just give me a couple minutes to clean up and then we’ll go.”

He sighs, his heart aching for you, but also warming at your undefeated resilience.

“Do you want me to stay here with you?”

You nod, pressing a gentle kiss to his lips before reaching for the makeup remover.

Ten minutes later you’ve redone your makeup and are feeling a lot better, having chosen to skip the makeup for some translucent lip gloss.

Charles smiles when you turn to him.

“I didn’t know you could get any more beautiful.”

Somehow, every time without fail, even after all this time, Charles manages to make you shy.

He chuckles, and pulls you into a hug, pressing a kiss to your hair (to not mess up your makeup) before the two of you leave.

You’re still feeling a bit weird, but it doesn’t matter because Charles is at your side, your hair is perfect and your dress matches his tie, and at this moment, that’s all you need.
