Prompt from jasper_resaj - Their voice sounds like hers

Work Text:

Leliana met with Madoc Amell in a small room. She had been more than a little suspicious of him for, though his story matched up well enough, Maya had never once mentioned a brother, not even in passing. Then she saw him, and she knew there could be no doubting it. Those were Maya’s features. Not exactly, no, but close enough to send a sudden pang of grief through her. Then he spoke, and he sounded like her too, voice a little deeper but with the same tempo and way of forming a word. He was so like Maya that it was hard to understand how long they had spent separated. Madoc, from what she understood, hadn’t seen his sister in over a decade. The first news he had ever received of her, after they were sent to different Circles, was of her death. He wanted, not unreasonably, to understand what Maya had died for, and who she had become. Leliana had been her lover, but looking at the brother she hadn’t known Maya had, she was unsure how much she could truly help him. Maya had never told her she planned to die.

Maya had kept a lot of secrets, it seemed, but none of them had known that until after she died. Then, their keeper gone, they had spilled out and left Leliana to reckon with what she hadn’t known about the woman she loved. She would never know why Maya had said so little about so much, nor if there was more that she and the others had no way of uncovering. Maya’s corpse could answer no questions. There was no way, now, of knowing what she had been thinking. Only the memory of her, distorted though it might be.
