    Summary

Penelope Featherington thinks she has the most boring job in the universe, translating foreign language juridical texts into English. After one especially frustrating day of translating the most pointless ancient Bavarian document, she's venting her spleen on her friend Anthony Bridgerton's voice mail:
"Can you believe women weren't allowed to work, study or vote, but were allowed to own - quote - 'Schuhe, eigene Boote, Fischrogen, mehr Schuhe'?! That's so random!"

When Anthony listens to the voice mail, he can't believe how melodic Pen's voice sounds. Since he's a record producer, he decides to make a song out of it. Pen agrees, but only under the condition that she remain anonymous.
It becomes a huge success in the London club scene.

Weeks later, Colin Bridgerton happens to hear the song in a club and instantly falls in love with the voice, not realising it belongs to his very good platonic friend Penelope.

    Chaos ensues.
