Summary
After what felt like forever, Wemmbu reached into his pocket and pulled out a slightly crumpled pack of cigarettes. His fingers were scraped badly enough that getting one out took two attempts. He slipped it between his lips before glancing sideways at Egg.
“...Light it.”
Egg quietly fished a lighter out of his own pocket. His hands shook enough that the first flick missed, but the second caught, a small flame dancing in the afternoon breeze. Wemmbu leaned forward, lit the cigarette, and took a slow drag before exhaling a thin stream of smoke into the air.
Only then did he really look at Egg.
His face had gone pale.
His hands still hadn't stopped trembling.
His eyes were glossy, like he was doing everything he could not to cry.
“...Sorry,” Egg mumbled, barely loud enough to hear.
Wemmbu let the smoke drift from his mouth before answering without looking at him.
"Shut up."
Egg swallowed hard and lowered his gaze to the pavement.
"...Okay."
